Hello Amy Schultz,
The information that your brother found is mostly true. Peebles, Peeples, and Peoples are all septs of the Clan Hay. Here in America the clan Hay society is located at clanhay . com.
On our trip to Peebles, for family research, we discovered that no one by the name of Peebles has lived in the town of Peebles. They seem to think the name came about by those that left the area for another city or town and then were known by their first name and the city they came from. (Example: William of Peebles) When the English insisted on everyone having last names, their name would become William Peebles. That is what the town researchers told us on our visit.
If you have a chance to visit Peebles, you will find it the friendliest place you have ever been in.
My great grandmother was Zilpha Catherine Peebles, b. abt. 1852 in North Carolina, daughter of Uriah Peebles and Amanda Merideth. Zilpha Catherine married John Walter Portis, my great grandfather. Does anyone know anything more about her background? I have heard that her mother, Amanda Merideth, may have been full-blooded Native American (possibly Cherokee), and that Zilpha Catherine was disowned by her parents. I've run into a brick wall on her mother's side, so any information would be appreciated.

Hello Tom. Have you and I been in contact before? I've corresponded with so many people about family-history over the last 30+ years ..!

You probably know this already, but you have relatives in Myrtleford, Victoria. Back in 1995 I corresponded with Mrs. Val McPherson there, who was researching her husband's Cellardyke ancestry. He was also descended from John Smith and Margaret Smith. She never did tell me her husband's first name, so I can only tell you McPherson.

Have you seen my book "Kilrenny and Cellardyke:800 Years of History"? I mention all the old Cellardyke families there. It was published in 1986 and soon sold out, but it has been reprinted since. So has George Gourlay's "Fisher Life; or, the Memorials of Cellardyke and the Fife Coast" (1879), which is the "bible" of Cellardyke studies.

Your distant relative, the late Peter "Pete" Smith - for many years a teacher at my old school in Anstruther - published three books about the local fishing industry. If I remember correctly, he came from the same family of Smiths as Margaret who married John Smith.

Mrs. Philippa "Pip" Buchanan of Tasmania brought out her book of Cunningham family-trees at about the same time as my book. She traced Cellardyke Cunningham descendants in Australia and New Zealand right up to modern times.

Did you know that your ancestor Thomas Smith (b.1784), father of John, is mentioned in a book? He is the only fisherman who gets an article to himself in Matthew F. Conolly's "Biographical Dictionary of the Eminent Men of Fife". I have a photocopy of the article and can copy it to you.

I have far more information than I can possibly post on a forum like this. If you'd like to contact me privately, my email address is h.watson701@btinternet.com

Cheers for now,

Harry

Re: Peebles family from Fife

Hello Harry,

Very many thanks for your kindness ing getting back to me so quickly - thats greatly appreciated. I tend to use rather old-fashioned methods but, I feel comfortable with them. I enter my details on to blank Ancestral Charts and work backwards. As an example, John Smith, born 26th July, 1827 at Cellardyke married Margaret Smith, born 6th July, 1829 at Cellardyke. They married here in Victoria, Australia on 9th January, 1857 at a place called Geelong, (just across the bay from where my wife, Marie and I live).

John Smith's parents: Thomas Smith born 18th October, 1784 at Cellardyke. 1st marriage to Christian Cunningham 27th December, 1811 He died 19th March, 1869 at Cellardyke and because his death was post-1855 he Death Certificate tells me that his parents were Thomas Smith born 19th July, 1752 at Kilrenny who married Agnes Fowler 13th March, 1778 at Kilrenny.

Thomas Smith, Jnr, born 18th October, 1784 married a second time, to Euphemia Boyter who had been born 12th July, 1795 at Cellardyke. I think Euphemia died about 1752 - damn and blast, pre-1855, so haven't got any details about her parents!

Margaret Smith, the wife of John Smith, died a short distance from Geelong - at Williamstown. She died 13th July, 1910, so am able to see tht her parents were James Smith, who married Lillias Wood on 10th August, 1799 at Cellardyke. Have no details about James and Lillias.

I think you can see that I do try to be methodical, but just need that little bit extra information. Even in this short e-mail, you can see tht I've done quite a bit and mentioned quite a few individuals.

If you don't mind, tht's how I would propose communicating.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes to you and yours,

Tom Fearns.

Hello Harry,

Struggling to find information on Anderson's, Fowler's, Davidson's, Cunningham's, Watson's, Rodger, etc., etc. Maybe I'm getting too old and should just stop taking the tablets, eh? Seriously though, I really am having a difficult time in connecting these families, although I did find that some members of the Fowler family emigrated, (as I did) to Australia, and they did remarkably well.

Any help on these families would be greatly appreciated although it would take me quite a while to insert them onto what I already have, so please bear with me, if I'm a wee bit slow in communicating with you.

Best regards,

Tom.

Re: Peebles Research (Originally from VA)

Dear Crystal

There are a number of different starting points for your research. I personally like to find documents (census, wills, marriage certificates, etc) that help confirm what I believe to be true. Most documents give some new information along with one more question that you will need to research to get the answer to. Census records are extremely helpful (There is a James and Pearl Peebles in Hickville, VA with a son Goodwyn in the 1920 and 1930 census. List all his brothers and sisters.) If you believe that is him you are one more generation back.

If you have a relative (near or far) call them up and ask them questions. If they can't help you they usually know some one in the family that can. If you live near the place where your grandfather was born you may be able to visit the courthouse yourself to fine documents. If you know the church they belonged to they may have published records. Another great source could be the newspaper in the town where he grew up. Microfilm copies could be at the library in the town or the state historical society. Some societies will send a copy of the microfilm to your library to read. You usually have to pay a small fee.

I could go on but this will definitely get you started. You may also find your family on the Internet. Be sure and check your research and theirs to make sure that you really are related.

Happy Hunting!
Mary Peebles
Yes..I did get in touch with a descendent of Jacob Pebbles..she gave some info and a private web site but the password didnt work all of sudden hmmm..Anyway the name you inquring about was not mentioned or seen in my research....I know Jacob's father was named John and that Jacob was born in West Virginia and he had only 3 daughters. He lived Concordia Parish, La. and Adams Co. Miss. Good Luck...There was a large Peeble family in Miss. I cant think of the counties they lived in.

Peebles of Hampshire or Hampden County, MA

I am trying to find the parents of my 4th great grandmother, Jane Peebles, born in Blandford, Hampden, Massachusetts around 1791. I looked in the 1800 census for her father, and I think one of these might be him. They were listed all together in Granville Middle Society, Hampshire, Massachusetts: Harvey Peebles, John Peebles Junr., Francis Peebles, John Peebles.

Does anyone have information on any of these men, or any Peebles/Pebbles in Massachusetts in the early 1800s/late 1700s?

I ran into a antique dealer in Canton TX today who has a bunch of old pictures he bought at a Peebles estate sale near Dallas TX. Some of the pictures are Tin Types and one says 1858. Many are obviously from the late 1800's. He also has many documents from this family including paperwork from a patent and a large family tree. One of the names was "Niles Peebles" and Dorothy. I just hate to see this stuff sold for decoration.

Contact me and I will give you his contact information.

_______________________________________________
Roger Arrick
Roger@Arrick.com
Tyler, TX
Hello everyone,

My name is Crystal Peebles. I'm originally from Petersburg, VA. I don't much about my father's side of the family. The only information I have is my grandfather (Goodwyn Peebles born in 1915) and his brothers (William, Fred, and William). They were from Emporia (or Greenville County) Virginia. I'm a little new at this family tree stuff so if anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Good luck to everyone on their research.
