Lucy Mae Pegram, Florida

My great-grandfather Joseph Herbert Pegram had a younger sister Lucy Mae Pegram, b. Apr 1892 in Orange Springs, Marion, Florida (per the 1900 census). She is present with the family in the 1910 census. After that she disappears. The rest of the family stayed in central Florida.
She didn't stay in Florida and didn't die there, because the family would have known. Does anyone have a extra Aunt Lucy somewhere?
Thanks,

David Beers

I am researching the Pegram family. In the 1850 census, Roger Pegram is listed as the head of household and in that houshold is a male by the name of Lott Pegram. He is listed as mulatto...Does anyone have any information on Roger Pegram and how it came to be that Lott Pegram resided in his household?

For your interest I have a letter written by Barbara Pegram to my mother, Hazel Stevenson, in early 1932. They were classmates at school in Toronto, Woodson County, Kansas. The letter is brief and doesn't provide any genealogy information. My post is only to inform you that there were Pegrams living in that area in 1932.

There is an incredible website available online that outlines the Pegram family history back to George Pegram of Essex Co. England.

All beit it is not complete and I have in the past emailed the curators of the site and asked to have more added but no response yet. It contains information on many of the Pegrams mentioned on this message board thread. I hope you all find it as informative as I have. http://www.patch.net/index.html

For those that are intersted in chatting further I can be reached at erobersonknight@aol.com

Elizabeth

Re: Any BLACK Pegrams??

Yes. My great-grandmother was a Pegram from Petersburg & married an Oliver.

Many of the families (Pegram) were in Petersburg, VA and again, were related by blood or otherwise, to the white landholdling Pegrams whose men fought as Confederate officers. How far back can you go? If you can follow your male Pegram ancestors back, you can look them up in the 1930, 1920, 1910,1890, 1880, & 1870 Census for Dinwiddie County, Petersburg, VA. If there is a really large library or a Mormon Family History Library near you, why not call them and see if they have the Census books or microfilm you could look through.

Yes, the Pegram's. The most Famous being Gen. Pegram who lead the Confderate Army had slaves. That is where the name on the Black side mostly derives. I am certain that there was interracial affairs, however secret. The slaves automatically took the owners name, for the original name from Africa was lost with the original language as well... There were also Black / Negro Pegram who fought in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy.....

Hello Pegrams in Petersburg! (Is that in USA?)
Besides the Black Pegrams, there are many more white folks than are aware that have Black ancestry, especially in the USA. I saw an Oprah show once where people were surprised to find this out. Much of that of course would be from the days of slavery.
I wonder if any Pegram folks were slave owners, or if any of you are descended from slaves. Do any of our listers have any of their family trees back that far?It is amazing how the history (and cruelty) around us shapes our lives.
Janet in Canada

I am an American Black Pegram and I believe that the Blacks were either mixed with the slave owners or adopted the name from the owners. The majority of the Pegram's were European and took on slaves...as in General Pegram of the Confederate Army. We are the Pegram's of Petersburg, myself..and I believe Sophia..is my niece..Hello Niecie

John Pegram

"Reared near Baltimore, Hetty Cary was related to two of Virginia's "first families," the Randolphs and the Jeffersons. War forced her to choose between leaving home and facing imprisonment on suspicion of harboring Confederate sympathies, so she settled in Richmond. Soon she was a leader among those working to provide clothing, food, and other necessities for soldiers.
After nearly four years of volunteer work, her activities caught the eye of thirty-two -year-old John Pegram, who sought and won her hand. On January 19, 1865, the refugee from Maryland and the Confederate brigadier general were married. Hetty enjoyed this relationship just three weeks; on February 5, the husband she found in the course of her war work was killed in the battle of Hatcher's Run."

I am not related to Hetty or John, I am just passing on this information which comes from a book titled "Civil War Curiosities" by Webb Garrison. 1994.
Joyce
