Because I research the Pelfreys of eastern Kentucky, I have some info on the family in West Virginia.
I'll be glad to help you with the early generations, but I don't have much information on the more recent ones.
Sim was the son of John and Margaret Bowen Pelfrey. This John was the son of William P. and Darcus Dean Pelfrey.
If you let me know what you need, I'll send you the information if I have it.
Can you tell me something about the family of Arthur and Nevada?
Bev Houghtling
belohou@msn.com
My husband is Carl Pelfrey son of Forrest Pelfrey and Frances Joiner Pelfrey. Forrest was the son of Arthur Pelfrey (son of Simpson and Melvina Pelfrey) and Nevada Ferguson. We have visited the family cemetery near Patrick Creek, on the hill right off Rt52 just down the road from Echo. I have pics that I have taken of the cemetery. I think this is the "farm" you are talking about. I am researching his family tree, and don’t have a lot of luck with the Pelfrey side. If you have any information please let me know.
Any help is appreciated,
Janine Pelfrey
Hi Cheryl, I am a decendant of John Palfrey, William Pelfrey his son , Wm,II and etc. Some how my org. reply did not make it thru. I have been researching since 1991 and the only origination of PELFREY is a Variant of PALFREY. You will not find any in an English research Except a Revolutionary War Record on William born 1764. There after came Pelphery,Pulfory,Pelfree,Pelfry etc. The only way to keep up is only by the first William and decendants after him. All the origanal names coming into the US and Canada under English & German I found are PELFREYS. I hope this helps you...

Who is this John Pelfrey in Laurel Co.,KY in 1860 Census?

I am looking for the third son of Pricey Pelfrey in the 1830 Monroe County, TN Census and I came across this John Pelfrey family that could belong to the Tennessee branch of the Pelfreys. Could someone tell me where he does fit in.

Most family searchers know that basically there are three branches of the Pelfrey family from the John and Elizabeth Pelfrey of Henry Co.,VA. The oldest son William (youngest sister, Anne went along too and married a Preston) started the Pelfrey/Pelphrey line in KY.

Thomas and James Pelfrey (sister Sarah who married Alexander Hannah (Hanner) went along also to Roane County, TN) started the Pelfrey line in Roane, Monroe, Meigs, and Rhea Counties in TN. I believe the Hannahs or part of them did end up going to KY after s few years. James had married Polly Turner in Henry County 18 Oct 1800. I don't have a surname for Pricey (Priscilla?) of Monroe Co. who appears to maybe be the wife of Thomas Pelfrey. Pricey has been listed in unsourced family trees online so much that it is easy to forget that we don't know this for sure. Pricey could have been a Turner also, but we don't know that either. James' wife WAS a Turner and a Nathan Turner was a bondsman in Roane County when Pricey (should have been a daughter of the Pricey in Monroe) married John W. Mapes in 1820 in Roane County. This Pricey Pelfrey Mapes had a brother Nathan Pelfrey of Meigs Co., TN.

Son Joseph Pelfrey (along with sister Elizabeth Pelfrey who had married James John Qualls/Quarles in Henry County) went to SC and started the Pelfrey line there and most of the ones in GA.

Being from the same parents (John and Elizabeth Pelfrey in Henry Co., VA), naturally these three branches of the Pelfreys would have stayed in touch for several years.

Maybe I don't have too many glaring mistakes in this short summary.

Now to get back to John Pelfrey, who I hope is from the Tennessee line and "hiding" among the William Pelfrey line in KY:

1860 Federal Census > Kentucky > Laurel > Not Stated

John Pelfrey 40
Mahaley Pelfrey 42
Barbary Pelfrey 15
Fannah Pelfrey 13
Ann Pelfrey 11
James Pelfrey 9
Rease Pelfrey 7

John Pelfrey (40) was b. in TN abt. 1820

Mahaley Pelfrey (42) was b. in TN abt. 1818

ALL THE CHILDREN WERE BORN IN KY.

You can see that this family seems to be from the sons of Pricey Pelfrey in the 1830 Monroe, TN Census. I have never seen a KY Pelfrey born this early in TN.

I have never been able to find this family before or since this census despite the unusual names of Fannah and Rease! Maybe the Civil War years didn't decimate the family.

One interesting thing about Fannah; there are only 11 females named Fannah in the United States according to Census Records of 1860 AND another one of the 11 Fannahs is Fannah Turner also in Laurel County, KY!!!
Chet Pelfrey

Hi Mary,
Beyond the marriage of Clayton Pelfrey, I can find little else. I can find him on the 1920 census of Wolfe County, but he is a boarder in someone else's home, so his parents must already be deceased. Have you been able to locate him on the census of 1910? Do you know where or when Clayton died? There were many, many William Pelfreys, so it's going to take a little more information to identify them.
I'm not a descendant of Clayton's, but I know I'm related.

Yes, I'm related, distanty, but not descended from Clayton. I can't say exactly how I am related because I don't know who his parents were. If he was the son of William P. Pelfrey, he was the first cousin of my ggrandfather, Nathan Pelfrey.

I am wondering if Clayton's parents may be William P. and Lou Hollon Pelfrey. They were married in Breathitt County, KY, 25 May 1905, but I have no information on them beyond this. William was the son of Daniel Boone and Nancy Ann Sparks Pelfrey. All I know about Lou is that she was the daughter of William and Marian ? Hollon, and was born about 1886.

The following is an excerpt taken from The Licking Valley Courier, Thursday, October 10, 2002, article entitled "Acceptable losses" by Tony Adkins. "Another resident of Relief, John Sitz Pelfrey, son of W. T. and Nannie Brown Pelfrey, was assigned to the same company. He had two brothers, Forrest and Wallie, and one sister, Lula, married to Irvin Holbrook". "Pvt. John Sitz Pelfrey was on guard duty at a forward position during the evening of 17 August (1918) during heavy artillery fire. He was struck by a piece of shrapnel, which entered one of his lungs. At first the company doctor believed the wound to be minor but John steadily lost strength. Further examination found severe internal damage".

Re: Origin of name Pelfrey

I would say that Pelphrey was once Pelfrey, which was once Palfrey. The Ky, TN, and SC Pelfreys (Pelphreys) more than likely trace their heritage back to John Pelfrey (Elizabeth) of Henry County, VA. On at least one occasion John spelled the name Palfrey. At one point there were still many Palfreys in the London phone book.
As was previously mentioned, the name probably was derived from the Palfrey which was a gentle riding horse for ladies, children, falconers, and even knights when not riding their war steeds.

There are many Pelfrey's in Kentucky, mostly central KY as far as I know.l I was born in Wolfe County, and have researched some of them, but mostly on just a level or two. My grandmother was Lucy Creech Pelfrey. I never met her because she and my grandfather were divorced when I was a baby.

You might try Worldconnect.rootwweb.com. There is a John Lewis Pelfrey , born in 1809 in Floyd County,KY and a John Pelfrey, born 1738 in Henry County, VA.

Please Help...Pelfrey/Lawson-Beattyville, Ky.

Hi,
I'm searching for the maiden name of my GGGrandmother. Her first name was Mary...or she went by Mary. She was married to James D. Lawson, had children by him, including my GGrandpa Banford,(known as Bee), Lawson. James D. Lawson Sr., died approximately 1898, my GGrandpa was 3 years old.

Mary then married Frank Pelfrey, approximately 1898, and also had children with him, the half Brothers & Sisters of my GGrandpa. I believe that Frank & GGGrandma Pelfrey may both be buried in the Day Cemetary in Beattyville, Lee Co., Kentucky.

If anyone can help me, in finding the maiden name of my GGGrandma, I would surely appreciate the information. This has been a brick wall for me for several years. Please feel free to e-mail me directly. I appreciate your time and consideration. Good luck to all.

Debbie T.
firestar@tgtel.com

James M. Pelfrey

My paternal ggf is James M. Peflrey, b. 1847 in Kentucky. He produced my gf, James V. Pelfrey, b. 1902 Arkansas, as well as Annie, Clearcy and Ruey. This occurred in his second marriage to Mary Ritchie Martin.

Due to a fire, and some neglected record keeping, I have no family data on James M. Pelfrey. Nor do I have information on Annie or Clearcy, who were my dad's paternal aunts.

If anybody could provide some data for me it would be truly appreciated. I know I have some Pelfrey relatives out there - I just don't know who they are, yet.
