I too would be interested in any marriages as named - my father was Nigel Pelham (1911-1959), his Mother Winifred Pelham (1882 - 1961)and they had strong connections to France, Switzerland and Italy.

Monday April 27, 2009 - Ref: Original request ref a Gene or Eugene Pallham painting: Gene Pellham was a friend of mine back in the 1960s and 1970s who was an artist living in an old house on the nort side of RT 313 in West Arlington, VT a mile or so out of Arlington but before the Wayside Country Store. Pellahm had a studio in a small red barn "on the road" across from his home. And his land ran south to the river.
Gene was "afiliated" with the Sourthern Vermont Art Association on the side of Equinox Mt. in Manchester Village and I believe they still have paintings of his - or they did when I sold out of Dorset where I lived some of the time and owned a home there.
Gene also bought the Vermont Newsguide on the nort or actually west side of RT. 7 or Main Street, Manchester Center just north of the Quality Restaurant and the grade school just off Main Street.
Geme bpigjthe old brick store and formeerly gasoline station from, I believe an old codger and friend, Bennett - but I could be wrong.
Anyway, I believe Gene founded the small sized News Guide and built it into a successful advertisement and local weekly. He sold it to another fellow who cut me off from my political letter writing because some few local advertisers and residents objected to the truths I was publising.
Gene and I used to talk of art, flying and politics and enjoyd a few drinks on occasion.
Bennett, if that is his name - I disremember - had been the original operator of the old gasoline and car parts store from the 30's or so. He was retired and loved to go prospecting up the East Mountains. He found a place where he could chip out yellow "cake" which he kept secret except he took me once to see it. He used to haul out a couple of hundred pounds of the rock and drive to Washington where he sold it to the government for nuclear energy under a program at that time.
Gene deteriorated over a time as we all do and died but I disremember just when since I had been traveling in and out of Manchester-
Dorset since about 1957 when I first came to ski at Bromly as a guest of an instructor and Hans Palmer, the head of the ski school.
I am an artist of sorts having been in and out of it for many years but being a pilot in 4 conflicts and flying as an airline pilot all over the world kept me busy - too busy - to become a full time painter.
However, you can see a few lesser paintings of mine and a bit of my history by following the live links in the URL following. I hope I helped with the Pellham history a bit.
Cheers. Jolly Uncle John aka John W. Willmott age 94 plus and active. http://www.seaboardairlines.org/ or http://www.seaboardairlines.org/activities/jw1.htm or http://www.seaboardairlines.org/activities/jw4.htm or http://www.centercomp.com/cgi-bin/dc3/stories?1964 That's enough folks. -30- 73

Just one hitch . . . any offspring of Freelove Pelham and Edward Arnold would have been surnamed Arnold, not Pelham. The marriage that I'd heard of was between a Freelove Arnold, daughter of Benedict Arnold I, Governor of Rhode Island; and a Pelham. Any offspring there would have had the surname Pelham.

I think you're probably right about the connection. Apparently Freelove Pelham and The Hon. Edward Arnold had 7 children: Susanna, William, Edward Seymour, Peleg, Joseph, John, Shelby - and an identified daughter who lived in Connecticut, which is where the Hon. Edward Arnold was from, though the children mostly ended up in New York, particularly Dutchess amd Greene counties. I'm wondering whether that daughter might have been Freelove, named after her mother?

Hannah Elizabeth Pelham Bradley was my sixth great-grandmother through her son Francis Bradley. Do a web search for "James B. Finley" and you will find his biography. In his biography, you will find a narrative about her. It is amazing to read.

Contact me at MBrad10590@aol.com if you want the links.

Hannah Elizabeth Pelham b. England 1724 d. Kentucky 1788

I have a Hannah Elizabeth Pelham who, it is said, was born in England in 1724 and died in Marysville, Kentucky in 1788. She was married to James Bradley (1720-1796). According to DAR records, she opened and maintained a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Revolution. However, nowhere on line can I find out anything more about it. Where was the hospital? Was she a trained nurse or simply a caring woman? If anyone knows more about her story, I would appreciate it.

Thank you in advance for any input.

Suzy Manderson

PLEASE NOTE, THIS WAS POSTED FOR REFERENCE ONLY. I AM NOT RELATED TO, NOR AM I RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY, I’VE ONLY DONE A COPY AND PASTE FROM OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER FYI.

THIS INFO HAS BEEN POSTED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE EDITOR OF THE COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD.

James E. Pelham
Posted: Tuesday, Mar 11, 2008 - 03:00:56 pm PDT
COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE, WASHINGTON STATE

James Eugene Pelham, 74, died on March 7, 2008, at his home in Royal City due to congestive heart failure. However, for everyone close to him and those who had met him only once, you know that Jimmy's heart did not cease to care deeply for others on that day.

Jimmy was a generous, thoughtful and humble man, who cared more for others than they could imagine caring for themselves. He was an honest man in friendship and love. Jimmy could make a friend in anyone he met and spent many hours telling stories to those new friends.

He enjoyed fishing in Port Angeles with his brother-in-law George Lindemann or Cottage Lake with his grandchildren, elk hunting at Bethel Ridge and Elk Heights with his father, brothers and son, deer hunting with his brothers and granddaughter, watching birds, feeding the squirrels and planting spring bulbs in his garden. Together with his son, he also tried his luck with horseracing and afternoons spent at Longacres Racetrack provided many family memories. Jimmy was also dedicated to playing the lottery every Wednesday and Saturday. At both horseracing and the lottery, he never strayed from betting "his" numbers: 1, 2, 6, 9 or 12. Jimmy, as we all are, is still waiting for those numbers to pay off. Jimmy met Shirley Smith at Franklin High School and they were later married on Nov. 12, 1954, in Seattle. Jimmy served in the Navy during the Korean War (1951-1954) and was stationed on the USS Porterfield. Upon his return from Korea, Jimmy and Shirley were married and started their family. They had two children, Doug, in 1956 and Diane, in 1958. The family lived in Seattle for a short time before moving to Redmond, where they lived for the next 30-plus years. The Pelhams knew many friends in Redmond and in a way watched the town become a city. Jimmy helped install the lights that still stand at Hartman Park baseball field and after that spent many years supporting children, including his own son and grandson, as they matured into men on the baseball field.

Jimmy spent 391/2 years employed as a lineman and serviceman for Puget Sound Power and Light (PSE). He was very committed to his work and felt a personal responsibility to serve the customers. In fact, it was not a proper Thanksgiving dinner without Jimmy being called away to restore power that had been knocked out by one of the many notorious Puget Sound windstorms. He made several friends during his years with Puget and held those he worked with in high regard.

After retirement and the passing of his father in 1997, Jimmy and Shirley moved to the family farm in Royal City where they continued the family tradition of raising cows and tending to their garden. Many hours were spent watching the cows and calves. In the garden, Jimmy was particularly proud of his onions, garlic and potatoes.

Jimmy was born on Oct. 7, 1933, in Deadwood, S.D., to William and Hazel Pelham. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley, his son and daughter-in-law Doug and Laurie Pelham, of Woodinville, grandchildren Stephanie Pelham of Olympia, Josh and Juli Pelham of Surprise, Ariz., and Danielle Street of Ukiah, Calif., and great-grandchildren, James and Jacob Pelham (Josh). He is also survived by his brothers, George and Danya, of Marlin, and Bill and JoAnn, of Royal City, sisters, Louise Ryerson, of Bricktown, N.J., Dee Brewer, of Seattle, Faye and Frank Roberto, of Royal City, and Betty and Ralph Barnett, of Valley; and many, many other extended family members. Jimmy was preceded in death by his father and mother, William and Hazel Pelham, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Milend and Louise Smith, daughter Diane "Sis" (Pelham) Street, brother Bob Pelham and sister Lorraine Maines.

The family would like to thank Central Basin Hospice for their dedication and compassion during his final days. At Jimmy's request there will be no service. Also, the family requests no flowers or donations. Instead, spend time with your family or others close to you so they know how important they are. In memory of Jimmy, spend some time telling stories. Services under the direction of Stevens Funeral Chapel in Othello.

New information on Nathan Pelham {Tennesee to Arkansas to Alabama to Texas}

I have recently been giving new information on Nathan Pelham & Francis Ann Barnes { my great great grand parents}. For over 10 years while I was researching this family it was believed that Nathan Pelham & {his wife} Francis [Frankie] Ann Barnes only had four sons: Jesse, Dee, Theodore & James. I have only recently in the last month found out that their were in fact nine children born to Nathan & Francis they were: Mary Etta Pelham	{she died in 1954 and is buried in Leon County Texas}{she married a }John Franklin Rippy, Esta Pelham {I do not know if she married, had children or where she is buried}, Edgar Pelham{I do not know if he married, had children or where he is buried}, Minnie Pelham{I do not know if she married, had children or where she is buried}, Sally Pelham {I believe she married a Stone, I do not know if she had children or where she is buried}, Jesse Oliver Pelham {is buried in Limestone County Texas} {he married a} Bertha V. Briggs, Dee Pelham {he is buried in Limestone County Texas}{he married I do not know here last name} Laura, Theodore (Shawn) Pelham {he is buried in Limestone County Texas} {he married a} Icy Cordelia Briggs, James (Jim) (Jimmy) Salman Pelham {he is buried in Falls County Texas} {he married a } Essie May Wilson.

Nathan and Pelham migrated from Tennessee in 1868 moving to Arkansas, to Alabama in 1870 and then back to Arkansas in 1878, and then to Texas in about 1900 settling in the area of Limestone & Falls County Texas.

I am looking for any descendants or relatives of this family or just anyone who might have any information on this family.

Thank You for the help
Tracy
Thanks Alex.

I have been to both the Leigh and Charlwood church yards and pieced together some of the family,. My fathers grandparents James and Mary Ann Pelham are buried at Charlwood.

My next stop is the family records centre at Woking to investigate the parish records, so any information will be greatfully received.

Many thanks
Margaret

Hi Margaret

For some reason I cannot contact you directly - if you can contact me I can give you some more details.

Anyway, in the 1841 census, Owen Pelham is in Leigh, Surrey. The reference is RG9/1076,f9,p11 - his age is given as 55 (so probably anywhere between 53 and 57, as the ages for adults were rounded), occupation agricultural labourer. His wife appears to be Amey, aged 40. Other members of the family are John, 13, James, 10, Elizabeth, 9, Emma, 7, Richard, 5 and Harriet, 2. All born in Surrey.

Owen is still around in the 1861 census, Leigh. I don't have the exact reference, although it looks to be RG9/444. His place of birth is given as Surrey, Holmswood (Holmwood, near Dorking).

HTH
Alex

Mary Pelham b. c1842 or Jacob "Jake" Pelham b. c1828

I'm looking for the parents of Mary Pelham b. 1842 in GA. She is listed in the 1880 census married to John W. Grigsby living in TN. Her parents are listed as being from SC. She had 3 children, Minnie, Thomas E. and John.

NOTE: The spelling of her name has ranged from Pellom to Pilgram.

In a 1900 census, her brother is living with her daughter Minnie (Grigsby) Odell. He is listed as Jake Pellom b. Apr. 1828 in GA. I'm assuming his given name was Jacob Pelham and the name in the 1900 census was spelled wrong.

Searching through ancestry.com records, I can't find a match so I'm hoping someone out there has some info. Thanks!

Charles Griffin Pelham b. 1835 in Westchester NY

Jeff:

Tried to reach you at email provided but could not get through.
My connection to the Pelham family is through Charles Griffin Pelham my great, great grandfather. He was born in 1835 in Westchester New York. I believe Thomas Pelham was his brother. There were at least two brothers Noah Hanfrod Pelham and the other brothers name escapes me at this point and two sisters.

I was going to search for Thomas death certificate to try to find out his parent's names.

Charles died of a stroke in 1900 in Bellevue Hospital and no names of parents was listed on his death certificate. His daughter Sarah was my great grandmother. Her daughter Marjorie told my mother that Charles had bright red hair. He was a bookseller in Manhattan and at least one of his brothers had a boot and shoe store.

According to New York City Directories, Charles and Thomas lived on the same block for at least one year in the 1870's and at that time Thomas was a wheelwright.

I am hoping you can provide me with the names Thomas' parents.

Thanks, hope you see this message.

Carol

Peter.Keeler@gs.com
