Fredéric Pelletier

Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help me in locating my Great-Grandfather. I believe his name is Fredéric Pelletier, born about 1861 in Montreal, Quebec. Full name believed to be Fredéric George Louis Gaston Pelletier. Left Canada probably between the ages of 15 and 20. Eventually married Margaretta Johnson from Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland about 1884 and changed surname from Pelletier to Gaston. Family legend has it that he was the 7th son of a 7th son but that's about all we have. I would be most grateful for any help and assistance in tracing my ancestor. Many thanks.

Pelkey is one of the corruptions of Pelletier... Most of the immigrants from Quebec were illeterate and did not know how to spell their names... the immigration officials, not knowing French, usually spelled the names phonetically... and I have heard the name Pelletier pronounced "Pelkier" by my wife's grandmother's husband...

In my data I have a Sophie Pelletier married to a Joseph Theriault in Frenchville, Maine, but in 1889...

Yes, Pelkey is definetly related to Pelletier. My father was Chester Bernard Pelkey, but the last name was originally spelled at Pelletier. His family is from Canada and they are French Canadian. His mother was Ester Robair, also French and migrated to New York from Canada. Lived in Ausable Forks, NY. Family in Moores, NY.

Hi Joyce,

Nicolas Pelletier is not the one named Antaya. Only his brother, François, and his lineage are Antaya. François never married a Native. He got his name Antaya when he stayed around Sorel, PQ. Nicolas had married three times with Native but, like I said, he never named Antaya.

Sory about my poor English.

Dodo

Hi Bill,

You're right. I just forgot that François married Dorothée at Tadoussac before his marriage with Marguerite Morriseau. He did'nt have children with Dorothée. That's why people named Antaya don't have any Native in their lineage. I found these on Pelletier's family association. Search was done by Benoît Pelletier Shoja: http://association.pelletier.net/GrandesFamilles/NicolasPell...

The problem with this marriage was because François did'nt got permission of his parents before getting married. By that time, child were minor until 25 years.

My leneage is from François Pelletier said Antaya, not from his brother Nicolas, both son of Nicolas Pelletier from Gallardon. Like is father, François is born at Gallardon but his brother Nicolas is born at Sillery, QC.

Some Antaya may have Native lineage today if some of them married Native in the 18th, 19th or 20th century. But they are from François's leneage, not from his brother Nicolas.

Dodo

Thank you very much for the reply.

I have since found their 1900 census record. They were living in Nashua and Frederick is listed as Alfred, like his son. His birth date is given as Jan. 1868. All except Elizabeth as listed as born in NH, in contradiction with the 1910 census.

There is an Alfred F. Pelletier born c. 1868 listed in the 1880 census. He is listed as a boarder in the house of one George Parsons, in Maysville, Maine. However, there he is listed as born in New Brunswick... Is it the same person?

I did try to search for Alfred/Frederick Pelkey, but couldn't find any matching record.

Pelletier family in Massachusetts

I am searching for parents and relatives of one of my ancestors, Frederick Pelletier b. 1869 in Massachusetts from Canadian parents. He married Elizabeth Rocheleau c. 1878, who was born in Canada. Their children were Delia, Eva, Alfred, Anna, and Julia. In the 1910 census, they are listed as living in Hillsborough NH. They moved to NH from MA sometime between 1896 and 1904.

Unfortunately, the 1910 census is all I could find about them, and I have no idea who Frederick's parents may have been. I could not find any matching family in the 1900 or 1880 censuses. The MA vital records were no help either.

It is possible that while in MA they went under a different name, as this was not rare among French Canadian immigrants. There is also a rumour in the family that one of his parents may have been Native American but there is nothing to support this.

I'd appreciate any hint or help anyone might have to share.

I think they were orignially from Canada. His name was Joseph Perry previously spelled pare'. His wife was Lucy pelletier later Pelkey. She married Joseph and on my grandmothers baptismal certificate they were Pare'. Later all of them were Perry. I have a picture and was told she was ojibwe. But no one has info on any of them. I think they were both native american. My father and I are very dark.

I have tried to find out more about this side of family for many years. Peter's mother, Mary Drinkwine is listed as parents coming from St. Legash, Province of Quebec. I would like to know about the Pelletier line and if there is any Abenaki on this side; as I beleive my father was Abenaki - his mother Marie Louise Truso, daughter of Marie Lafountain, daughter of Lucy Pelkey (Lafountain). I believe my gr-gr grandfather to be Joseph Pelletier & ? XX Short but cannot find many records showing anything on them. From what I can see JB Parisien & Larose came back to Canada from the Dakotas so it may be that her family history originated in that area. I've been told she was of Lakota blood...so far we have French/Metis/Cree/Lakota and Algonquin...oh and a little Scot too from the Short side. I have Poitras back to Andre (1610) & his unknown Indian spouse. On the Parisien side I have JB Parisien (1712) & Louise Bercier.
Hey Dodo, Your English is just fine. Regarding Francois Pelletier Antaya, I believe he married Dorothy(English Name) in Tadoussac which caused a problem because the bans of marriage were not formally announced. I have traced many of the Antaya's to the Detroit and Windsor area. I was in contact with several of them and they provided me with some of their genealogy research on the Antaya surname. Is your lineage traced back to the Nicolas Peltier/Pelletier surname?
I have traced my lineage back to Nicolas Peltier who came to Quebec City in 1636 from Gallardon. His father was Francois. I have visited Gallardon in 1999 and 2005. Later, Bill Peltier
