My uncle, Brooker W. Pence was born in Griffithville, White, Ark Oct 19, 1897. In 1920 he was living in Yell Co. Ark. He married Myrtle Royce. He lived in Illinois for a time but not sure when. He and his wife lived in Grady Co., Ok between 1920-1930, Amarrilo, Potter, Texas in 1930 and eventually in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where he died in 1966 under the name Brooks W. Pence. They had two children that I am aware of, Nina and Robert.
Brooker's father was Marion T. Pence (1844-1919), mother Lora (Willyard) Pence (1861-1901)

William Strickland married Christianna Pence

Looking for any info on Christianna Pence (1825-1844): i.e. her siblings. Her father was William Pence, her mother was Mary Thurston. She married William Strickland (born abt 1870 in Tenn). I believe they had at least 3 children, two of which were William Redmond 'Red' Strickland and John Luther Strickland, both moved west to Bruneau, ID. The other might be a girl named Carrie whom also moved to Bruneau. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

This is not my family line. While looking through a very old book, I found several items - clippings re: the Pence Family. There is a photo of Leroy Pence, MD, and a picture of Maple Hurst, his home in Spencerville, OH. There is also an index card typed with info about the marriage of Mary Alice Pence (daughter of Henry) to W. H. Troup. I will gladly send these items to a family member who is researching this particular Pence line. Just contact me through the message boards.

I am looking for info re: my great grandmother, Susan Pence Brown Franklin Hancock.

I believe she was born abt. 1834 in Va. She died 1884 and is buried in Craig C.,Va.

She was married to an Unknown Brown between 1850-1860, an Unknown Franklin between 1860-1870, and Stephen Andrew Hancock in 1873.

She had children by all three men, all of whom, including my grandmother, Florence Belle (Franklin) Hancock Craft, were adopted by Stephen Hancock.

She is NOT the daughter of Catherine Bower and Phillip Pence of Mt. Jackson, Shenandoah Co, Va., although she is listed as such on some web sites. That Susan Pence was born, married (to a Mr. Foltz), died, and was buried in Shenandoah Co, Va. I have verified this with a member of the Pence family, who has extensive research and documentation.

Any help identifying my great grandmother and/or my biological great grandfather would be most appreciated.

There is no "curse" that I know of--only the possible genetic possibility of alcolhol sensitivity and very possible development of alcoholism. Jess Pence, who died at age 56 in 1956 or '57 (London, Ohio--born in Indiana)
had a massive stroke and was an alcoholic. He was abusive and neglectful of his family. His two sons were never
able to maintain long-term familial relationships and his daughters (there were 5) suffered in varying degrees because of his problems--not to mention his wife who was
legally separated from him for several years before his death. The "curse" in this case is made up of the turmoil that was part and parcel of this family's heritage for which this man is responsible. In his defense, if there can be one, he was also a victim of the times (depression)
and he spent 6 to 8 months in jail for a minor offense which he did not commit and did not have justice. (No lawyers for people who had no money for lawyers back then.)

I don't really either, just exploring the possibility- my family has had unbelievable happenings- murder, rare genetic heart condition (but noone else has it, so how'd she get it?), brain aneurysm, etc- out of 5 of us, 4 have had a major calamity. I started thinking it was unusual for these many things to happen to one family. I meant that I wasn't looking for a genetic disposition to alcohol or something along those lines- I don't recall anything particular in my mother's Pence line, pretty straight forward, hard working group. But my grandmother Pence did die of breast cancer.

I'm working on a book about the concept of generational curses. My family has had a lot of adversity (I'm a Pence on my mom's side) and wondering if anyone has heard of anything. I'm not looking at genetic medical conditions- more of the Twilight Zone (cue music) out of the normal stuff.

Thanks!

Hello all,
I've been dealing with the Pence curse ever since I started investigating my mother's side, which goes back to a Pence. My ggg grandmother was Margaret Pence and I think she just fell out of the sky when she married John Slagle because I can find NOTHING about her prior to the marriage. We're talking years of research and a visit to the homestead in PA where she and her husband raised a 10 children. So maybe the curse is on me?
Kelly Lardner

I also received an email from Linda Walls who stems from the Clarion Co Pa Pence's. According to her the Peter Pence who came to Armstrong Co Pa came out of Lancaster Co and traveled along the southern side of Pa until he reached westernPa and went to Armstrong Co Pa. She agrees with what info I have except she says his dau Catherine married Robert McFarland. I believed Catherine married Thomas Buzzard. If I'm wrong I need to keep hunting for the right Catherine Pence Buzzard b 25 Dec 1803 Buried Narrows Ceme. As a matter of fact, One of Thomas and Catherine's grandsons went to WV he was Elwood Sherman Buzzard.

In 1850, Mr. M. Pence, in company with William Lyon, Robert Bounds, Alfred Kagy, and John Slocum, located what was then known as the Lyon ranch, in the Messila valley (an arm of the Sacramento valley), so named by Mrs. Burnham. Here they opened a store and eating-place in a tent. The bar was kept on a small board taken from the broken wagon-box. The interests of his partners changed hands frequently, but Mr. Pence retained his, and in 1866 bought out Thomas Harrison and became sole owner of the property. A blacksmith-shop and post-office are kept by Mr. Pence. The latter was established in 1864, with M. Pence as post-master. The department spells it Pentz. At first the mail brought to the office could be placed in a cigar-box ; now the different publications taken at the office number a hundred. It is on the old emigrant road, twelve miles from Oroville, and has a daily mail.

The ranch consists of four hundred acres, and is one of the most valuable as well as beautifully-located ranches in the county. All kinds of fruit trees and shrubs grow and bear abundantly. The vineyard contains about 12,000 vines. In the orchard are about sixty orange and lemon-trees, together with a good collection of peaches, apples, pears, nectarines, apricots, and both black and California walnuts. The grapes are grown without irrigation, and command the highest price in the market.

Manoah Pence, the proprietor of the ranch, was born in Perry county, Ohio, on the sixth day of April, 1819. He was the son of Isaac and Catherine (Heck) Pence. Manoah was the second son of seven children. His boyhood days were spent in labor on the farm, mingled with a limited attendance at public school, so that his facilities for an education were not large. When twenty-one years of age he left the parental roof, and for eight years resided in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. On the second day of April, 1849, he started for California, and came overland via the Sublette cut-off, landing on the Lassen ranch October 2, 1849. His party being out of supplies, Mr. Pence and Dr. Chandler were selected to go to Sacramento for them. On their return, while at a point near Hamilton, the storms set in, and they could proceed no further. The other members of the party were sent for, and they all began mining on the river. Mr. Pence took out with pick and pan thirty-seven dollars daily. He afterwards mined on the west branch at Ohio bar, and at Rich gulch, near Yankee Hill. In 1850, he abandoned mining and settled on his ranch. On December 16, 1857, Mr. Pence was married to Mrs. Sophia (Chase) Finn, a native of Maine, and widow of the late Nemiah Finn. By her first marriage she had two children : Laura Helen, born September 20, 1848, and died April 11, 1849 ; Charles E., born September 20, 1850, and died August 12, 1851. Mr. and Mrs. Pence have also had two children : Watt M., born September 10, 1858 ; Layton, born October 16, 1860, and died January 5, 1863. Mr. Pence is a member of Table Mountain Lodge, F. & A. M., at Cherokee. He is widely known throughout Butte county, and highly esteemed by all.

Near Pence's ranch is the lumber-dump of the Oroville Lumber Company's flume. The Sugar Pine Lumber, Flume and Mining Company was incorporated in 1874. In 1875-6 the flume was built. It heads in Concow township at Flea valley, where are two large saw-mills. Two thousand inches of water are conveyed in the flume a distance of twenty-five miles to the dump, in the course of which there is a fall of 3,500 feet. On the nineteenth of February, 1879, a new company, called the Oroville Lumber Company, was formed, with a capital stock of $200,000. Mr. Daniel Hilton was the first superintendent, and still holds the position. At the dump there is a large planing-mill, where lumber is made to suit the trade. Three million feet of lumber are cut annually by this company, and the amount will be greatly increased hereafter, because of projected improvements to be made the coming year. Near the dump is a good store, kept by J. R. Buffington.

History of Butte County, California : “In Two Volumes, Harry L Wells & Frank T Gilbert
Published by: Harry L Wells, San Francisco, 1882
Pages 251-252

Hi Deb!

Thanks for being in-touch! I was able to get my SAR documentation together and it was accepted in January 2008.

I guess we're distant cousins!

I'm descended through Mary's brother John Sisler, his son Daniel, his son, Oscar, his daughter Grace Ethyl Sisler Irwin, and her son Robert G. Irwin.

There is a lot of information down the line on our branch of Sisler's, and it looks like a book was written some time ago on Michael Sisler Jr.

Do you have much information on Michael Sr., or Rachel?

Thank you,

Matt McCoy

I was amazed that it ended up being John Tate PENCE! and other relatives. I have seen the cemetery listed as Ballplay, LittleJohn, Taylor but it is an old country cemetery (20 years ago)
