Nimrod must have died by the spring of 1848, because on April 20, 1848, Malinda declined to become administrator of the estate. On April 29, 1851 Malinda's administrator arranged for public sale of her property. Luther Reed waws granted guardianship of the children. Later the kids scattered to Elkhart Indiana, Iowa, and northern Ohio. Hope this helps. mariannepindell@verizon.net

The information I have on Nimrod's parents are Jacob PINDELL and Susannah HAYES.

For Mahala's siblings, this is what I have based on the PINDELL book that was published by other PINDELL cousins:

Collins PINDELL - born December 10, 1835 Brown County, Ohio and died June 2, 1919 in Indiana. He married Julia Ann OTT and I have additional information on Collins' descendants.

Thirza Theresa PINDELL - born about 1839 but no other information on her.

Cary PINDELL - about 1841 but no other information on this person.

Phelon PINDELL - about 1844, possibly Brown County, Ohio, but no other information on him.

and you have information on Mahala Virginia PINDELL.

I'll keep looking for additional information on Thirza, Cary and Phelon.

Pat McCoy

I'm the archivist for this Springer family and so am preparing the Springer book. Malinda Springer was born 20 Jul 1812. Not absolutely sure if it was western Pennsylvania or southern Ohio. Our records show she died in 1851. Since she is in the 1850 Franklin twp, Brown Co, Ohio census and the 1851 tax list there I thought she probably died in Brown Co. Her parents were John Springer and Rebecca Stockwell who lived in Highland Co., Ohio.

I have Nimrod's parents as Edward Pindell and Mary Lucas. I don't need his line going back but do like to list the parent in the book. I have details on daughter Mahala Virginia who married Lewis Hanselman, but nothing on the other siblings. I am trying to complete the line for the book and would appreciate any help you can provide. You can email me.

I agree that Thomas and Mary Pindall would have been too old to be parents of the Robert G. Pindell whose will was probated in MD in 1833. I am presuming him to have been a descendant who was born several generations later.

I should also like to note that it is possible Robert Pendell might have been an original imigrant. I know there are a number of Pendell imigrants to the USA who came later than the original lines that came in the 1600's.
.

My dates for the male Pendells don't add up correctly. Thomas and Mary Pindell would be too old to have Robert G. Pindell as their son. I'll keep digging.
Thanks again -
Janelle

I just realized that when I wrote my answer to your original posting that I did not mean to imply or state that Robert R. Pindell's father and mother were living in Philadelphia in 1880. I was stating that the 1880 census showed that both parents of Robert were born in PA. I'm sorry my communication was confusing. I did not note until looking at the census entry again that his mother was actually there.

In looking back at my research for my reply to your message,I find I mistated that Robert Pindell's father was also in the Philadelphia, PA census for 1880. In looking at the 1880 census again, I find it was only Robert's mother who was living in the same household. She is listed as "mother" in the relationships which refers to relationship to the head of the household. Her name is given as Elizabeth Pote and states she was 60 years old, therefore born about 1820. From this entry, I would infer that her first husband (Pindell) had long since died and she remarried a Mr. Pote. Since she was living with her son, it is most likely that her second husband had also died by 1880. Elizabeth Pote was born in PA as well as both of her parents. Elizabeth Pindell, wife of Robert, was born in PA too, but both of her parents are listed as born in Scotland. This Elizabeth is listed as being disabled from cancer, thus likely did not live much longer.

The Robert Pindell (born circa 1810-1820) who was living in Philadelphia in the 1840 census seems to me to be a likely father of the Robert Ross Pendell, born about 1843. I can't find this family in the 1850 census, so I suspect that the elder Robert died before 1850.

I have no known relationship to this Pindell family, but was interested in following up from the information you provided in your message. I believe that Robert Pindell is the name of one or more descendants of the emigrants Thomas and Mary Pindall who came to Maryland in the 1680's from England. The General Index of Wills of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, 1777 - 1917 lists a Robert G. Pindell probate in 1833. This cites folio # 182, Book TSS # 1, No. 40. A well researched genealogy was published a few years ago on Thomas and Mary Pindall and their descendants.

I did a census check and found your Robert Ross Pendell, age 37 in the 1880 census living in Philadelphia, PA with his wife, Elizabeth, 35, and children Elizabeth, 12, and Robert, 11, with all born in PA as well as Robert's father and mother.

In the 1860 census, Robert R. Pindle, 16, was living with the Hugh Ross family in Upper Oxford Township, Chester Co., PA along with an apparent sister, Mary Pindle, 18. They were all shown as born in PA. Considering Robert's middle name, Hugh Ross was probably a relative. I could not find your Robert in the 1850 census.

In the 1840 census, there was a Robert Pindell, 20-30, living in Philadelphia, PA with a male child, 0-5, and a female in the household, 15-20.

Records show that Robert R. Pendell served in the Civil War with troops from PA and that he later drew a Civil War pension.

I am not aware of any Pendell surname descendants of William and Mehitable (Parker) Pendell living in PA in the early through mid-1800s'. I have researched this family for many years. I think you might have success if you research the Pindell family that started in this country with Thomas and Mary Pindall who came to MD in about the 1680s' The descendants in this family usually spell the name with an i instead of an e, although occasionally some have taken the Pendell spelling.

I hope this message is helpful.

William Pendell Sued in Suffolk Co. (MA) Court in 1675

"Records of Suffolk County Court, 1671-1680, Part I" published by the Colonial Society of Massachutsetts in 1933 by the University Press, John Wilson & Son, Cambridge, USA and found in "Publications of The Colonial Society of Massachutsetts, Vol. XXIX," summarizes the case of William Pennell vs. William Pendell which appears to have occured on May 24, 1675.
William Pennell commanded the ship "Friends Increase" on behalf of owners out of Falmouth, England. He had hired William Pendell to be the ship's carpenter. Pennell, on behalf of himself and the ship's owners, sued William Pendell for damages caused by Pendell's absenting himself from his duties. The Jury found for Plaintiff Pennell and ordered forfeiture of Defendant William Pendell's wages according to law and court costs.
The above noted William Pendell would appear to be the same person who arrived in New London, CT in or before 1676 and became employed by Ralph Parker as a mariner Ship-wright. I understand this is in essence a ship's carpenter. From the information provided in the case, one could speculate that our William Pendell came to New England as a crew member of the ship "Friend's Increase" and at some point during his employment, he jumped ship in Boston. (i.e., he apparently left the ship without being paid.) It also suggests that he may have previously lived in or near Falmouth, England, the ship's home port.
Has anyone previously discovered the above court case and followed up the clues placing William Pendell in Suffolk County, MA and Falmouth, England? Since I have never seen such reference in past, I think it is an area to be researched.
The G. D. Pendell, M.D. you refer to was Dr. George Dempster Pendell, a first cousin to my grandfather. He was born at Prairie City, IL 6 Jul 1863 to Wesley and Mary Pendell and probably moved to Seward Co., NE about 1880 with his parents and their family. He died 18 Feb 1936 in Wichita, KS. If you need more specific information, there was probably an obituary in a Wichita newspaper after his death. I have his genealogy if it is of interest.

I find it interesting that you say the original name is from Wales. I know very little Welsh, but Pen means top, such as in Pen-y-Bryn 'top of the hill' and the definite article is missing, so should it be Pen-y-dell??
But then the Dell bit is in English??? What is the Welsh language equivalent?

Much more likely to have originated in Lancashire, although all of our Pendle/Pendal ancestors came from Suffolk when we get back a couple of generations.

Here is a taste of Welsh for you :-)

Er bod yr iaith Gymraeg yn un o'r ieithoedd hynaf yn Ewrop mae hi dal llawer iawn yn fyw ac yn iach heddiw. Siaredir yr iaith geltaidd yma gan tua 65% o'r bobl sy'n byw ym Mharc Cenedlaethol Eryri, yn lle mae Betws-y-Coed wedi ei leoli, felly peidiwch a synnu os clywch hi'n cael ei siarad - nid yw pobl yn siarad amdanach, dim ond mynd o gwmpas eu bywyd arferol!

and here is the translation . . . . .

The Welsh language, although one of the oldest surviving languages in Europe, is still very much alive and healthy. This celtic language is spoken by around 65% of the inhabitants in the Snowdonia National Park, in which Betws-y-Coed lies, so don't be surprised if you hear it spoken - you are not being talked about, people are just going about their everyday business!

Pat ...

Hi Janet! I wasn't able to make it to the Curl reunion this year. Starting about two weeks after last year's reunion we had one crisis after another. I haven't really had time to work on my genealogy. Do you have any information on Hopey's ancestor's. Also, there is a relatively new headstone on her grave. Any idea who might have had it placed there? If I could track them, we might get some more information on her.

J. Cole:
If you are still working on this problem, you might find the following helpful.
There were two Oliver Pendells in NY in 1820 and they were first cousins. Both had a daughter named Almira. The Oliver Pendell at Plymouth in Chenango Co. NY was the one who married Hannah Brooks in 1799 and had the Almira born in 1811. This Oliver was the son of Elisha Pendell and Irena Boynton. The other Oliver was the one who married Anna Hodges in 1818 and lived in Pompey Township of Onandaga Co. NY. The 1820 census shows he had a daughter who was under 10 years of age. This Oliver was the son of Jonathan Pendell and Mary Page. Jonathan and Elisha were brothers and the sons of John Pendell and Hannah of Bolton, CT and descendants of William Pendell and Mehitable Parker.

Patricia Bridges: Thanks for the informative message. I presume you were responding to the messages of Jacques Bryant and Thea Lucas as I was also since I have serious doubts about the Wales origin of the Pendell family as was stated previously. In previous research I found an area in northern England with a number of locations named after Pendle including Pendle Manor, Pendle Moor, Pendle Hill, Pendlebury, etc. I'm not sure if all were spelled "Pendle", but if not, it was a variant. I believe these were near the city of Leeds. My immigrant ancester to the US (William Pendall) came to New London, CT about 1676 and I have not been able to find where he came from, but I note one researcher believes it was from Lancashire. This seems possible based on a certificate I have from the Historical Research Center (I don't know this organization's reliability) on the origin of the Pendle name. Their research finds mention of a Pendle reference as early as the 1086 Domesday Book and the surname in Lancashire returns of 1332. They also note there is a coat of arms which I have otherwise seen depicted. I would be most interested in any early Pendle (Pendell) information you may have found.

Steve:
I guess we are probably 4th cousins and maybe once or twice removed depending on your generation. My line goes
John, Plyny, John, Leander, Grant, Donovan (thats me). I have not tried as yet to research Irena Boynton's ancestry. I do have that her parents were John Boynton and Tabithy Daves and I seem to recall seeing they were from Rowley, Massachutsetts. Irena was born 14 Jan 1745/6 and Married Elisha Pendell on 15 Apr 1762. She probably died at Athol, Warren Co. NY. If you have the Boynton lineage going back from there, I'd be very interested in adding that to my charts. I have tried to trace Malinda Mack without success. All I have found was that John and Malinda were married 4 May 1788 in Sullivan Co., NH and Malinda was apparently born in CT. I have that Malinda was b. 25 Apr 1765. There were several Mack families in NH, one of which was Capt Elisha Mack in Gilsum, NH in 1776 when Elisha Pendell & family lived there too. The Mack family immigrated to Mass. before 1650.
Don

I descended from Clarissa's brother, Pliny. Their parents were John Pendell and Malinda Mack. John was born in Winsdor, CT in 1765 to Elisha Pendell and Irena Boynton. Elisha was born in 1742 in Bolton CT to John Pendell and his 2nd wife, Hannah_____. John Pendell was bapt. in 1711 in New London, CT by parents John Pendell and Elizabeth Carpenter. John Sr. was bapt. in 1679 by parents William Pendell and Mehitable Parker who had married in 1676 in New London. William had come there in 1675 or 1676 probably from England. Mehitable was dau. of Ralph Parker who had originally immigrated to Massachusets from England in the 1640's or 1650's.

Unless there is other corroborating evidence, I believe the info
that the Pendell's immigrated to US from Pen-Dell, Wales is a figment of Jonathan Pendell's imagination when he stated that information on his Revolutionary War pension application.
He also stated his father was Elishern or Elisha Pendell. I know from Bolton CT vital records that Jonathan was born in Bolton, CT to John and Hanna Pendal. Most researchers attribute this John Pendal to be the son of John Pendell, born at New London, CT to the immigrant William Pendall who came there about 1675. Jonathan Pendell did have an older brother named Elisha. I, too, have not been able to find Pen-
Dell on any map of Wales. I can only speculate that Jonathan's memory was very confused in his later years when he applied for the pension, or family members filled it out for him and did not have the story straight as happened in so many families when parents did not do much communication about their families and the children grew up a long distance from the extended family.

J. Cole: I'm sorry, but I haven't researched the Cole family. What I found in a quick searchj last night is probably the same as you already have. I'm surprised there was no marriage information as she should have been in either Chanango or Broome Co. NY at the time she married which I believe you said was in 1837. I searched the census listings and couldn't find the couple in 1850, but in 1860 and 1870 they lived in Jenkins Twp., Mitchell Co., IA. In 1860, the census shows Henry was born in NY about 1810 while in 1870 it says he was born in PA. He was not on the 1880 census, but Almira is shown as a widow iiving with her son, (Asa) Foster Cole and his wife, Bridget and their 6 mo. old child, Charles, in Saratoga, Howard Co., IA. Foster shows both his parents born in NY.
For what its worth, I did a AGBI search in the Ancestry.com database on Almira Cole, born 1811 in NY, maiden name Pendell. The first item that came up was a listing under Henry Stever Cole, born 1812, NY and cited as appearing in the Boston Transcript, Vol. 32, p. 136. I don't have access to the Boston Transcript archives to look that up, but assume it is in relation to a genealogy submission that many newspapers found popular about 100 years ago. I would think genealogy libraries might have this on file., particularly the LDS Library in Salt Lake City.
I have done quite a bit of Pendell research if you are looking for information on that line. I descend from Oliver's brother, John. Oliver was undoubtedly born in Gilsum, NH where his parents lived in 1776. His parents were Elisha Pendell and Irena Boynton who were both born in CT

Re: OBIT for Catherine Cole (Pendell) of Centerville, Ohio

I am looking for information on some Pendell's in the Ohio area. I don't know if they are related to Catherine though.
My GG was John James Pendell. He passed away around 1925 in Toledo. He was married to Emma at the time. He had sons Sylvester, Earl (my grandfather), and William. Any info you may have would be appreciated

I guess that makes us rather distant cousins :-). Your information matches mine exactly. Have you ever followed Irena Boynton's heritage back? I have seen at least one source that traces it to the 14th century in England and a Sir Christopher Boynton. ~ Steve

From Clarissa and John here is my line:
Leonard, Archibald, Charles, Estel, Virginia, Steve (me)

I cannot vouch for the accuracty of the Boynton line, though I have
found a few corroborative family trees online.

Here's what most of them agree on:

Irene Boynton - 14 JAN 1746 - Coventry, Connecticut
Elisha Pendell

- John Boynton - 09 OCT 1718 - Coventry, Connecticut
- Tabety Dawes (Daves or Davis?) - 21 MAY 1720 - Coventry, Connecticut
married 11/06/1740

-- Zachariah Boynton - about 1680, Newbury, Massachusetts
-- Sarah Wicom - abt. 1688

--- Joshua Boynton - about 1646, Rowley, Massachusetts
--- Hannah Barney (Barnet?) - 1661

---- William Boynton - about 1605, Knapton, England
---- Elizabeth Jackson - about 1618

---- William Boynton - about 1580 - East Riding, England
---- (1)Elizabeth ?? (2)Jane Chambers - about 1581

----- William Boynton - about 1545
----- (1)Jane Woode (2)Margaret ?? - about 1547

------ Roger Boynton - about 1525
------ Jenet Watson - about 1525

------- James Boynton ~ about 1500
------- Jane ?? ~ about 1500

-------- Robert Boynton ~ about 1480
-------- Agnes Scrote ~ about 1482

--------- Christopher Boynton ~ 1452, York, England
--------- Jane Strangeways ~ before 1452, York, England

---------- Sir Christopher Boynton ~ 1420, York, England
---------- ?? Coignas ~ abt 1425,

----------- Thomas Boynton ~ abt 1397
----------- Margarette Normanille ~ abt. 1400

------------ William Boynton ~ abt 1360
------------ Jane Harding ~ abt 1375

------------- Henry Boynton ~ abt 1311
------------- Elizabeth Merrifiels ~ abt 1350
Beyond this point the records diverge into too many possiblities, some
bordering on the ridiculous (parents born after children, etc.)

I'd love to see some definitive answers on the accuracy of this information.

I am also descended from Leonard and Jane through their son Archibald:

Archibald Brooks (b.1848 OH - d.1940 OH),
Mary Margaret Kates (b.1855 IN - d.1937 OH)
son Charles Grover Brooks (1886 - 19??)
Maude Estelle Tracy (1890 - 1949)
son Estel (William Estel) Brooks (1910 - 2001)
Helen V. Since all my school records were in the name of Ericson I had it legally changed when I entered the military to avoid confusion.

I have some additional information on the Ourslers if you are missing any from their line.

Tracy, I had set this aside quite some time ago because I was getting nowhere with it, so I missed your posting until now. I had very little information on Almira (even though she's my gggrandmother). The information I have puts her as born in Chenango County, NY around 1812, She died after 1896 in Iowa.
She married Henry Cole, I'm still not sure where or when, and they had five childern, Helen (1837, Yates Co, NY), Oliver Luther Cole (1839, Yates Co, NY), Hiram (1846, Yates Co), Perry (1848, ?), and Asa (1854?, ?). Information on this family is very sketchy, but I'd be happy to share what I have.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the Bible entry you posted below?

Re: Almira/Elmira Pendell b. Circa 1820 NY or PA

Donovan, I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you -- I'd put this aside for some time and hadn't picked it back up. Thank you so much! In the interim, I had learned that my Almira was born circa 1812 in Chenango county, so, I'd guess that makes her the daughter of Oliver and Hannah Brooks. She died sometime after 1896 in Iowa. I'm still looking for her marriage to my gggrandfather, Henry Cole, who is still a huge enigma. There is very little information on her descendents, but I'll be happy to share what I have. Would it be possible to get additional information on her family from you?
