John Willis Hanford "Hank" Penland

I am looking for information on the family of John Willis Hanford "Hank" Penland b. 29 Jan 1918 d. 14 Sept 1980 and wife Claudia Wells McDowell b. 17 Nov 1921 d. 2 Apr 1991. Known children are Charles Hanford, Gerald Wayne, Bessie Juanita, Vicki Lynn and Jamie Claudine, I think there were two or three other children born to this couple, one stillborn. This family lived in Chandler and Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I will be glad to share any other information I have.

I have just begun to search for my maternal family. China Penland Draper was my great grandmother and she was married to Joseph B. Draper. I know of 8 children who lived to adulthool. I will be happy to share what little information I have on this family.

This is an interesting site and I'd like to see more participation. I too am looking for any information regarding a Will Penland or Mattie Florence Morrow Penland, his wife. They had twelve children and I believe they lived in Tennessee, I know that Mattie Penland is buried in Knoxville. I would be their great grand-daughter. I do not really know the Penland side of my family. (My parents divorced when I was young, no real link to them) but I have always LOVED Appalachia and learned about ten years ago that my biological family is from there. Very interesting because I am very drawn to that area. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated!

There is no Jane in the Harvey Monroe Penland family. It was a census takers mistake on th 1850 census. The 1860 census has the last name spelled Pendland and has the child correctly listed as James, but they almost wrote in "F" for the sex and changed it to "M". There is a Jane in the 1860 census in Buncombe Co. and in Haywood Co. that might be the right Jane. If you'd like any more info. please contact me personally. gen_gram@yahoo.com

HI ANITA, THANKS FOR THE INFO. MY AUNT WAS WONDERING WHAT THE N. STOOD FOR AND NOW WE KNOW. WE ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY HE WAS BORN IN ORANGE CO. WHEN THE REST OF THEM WAS BORN IN WAKE CO. Hi Anita, This is the person my aunt is looking for. Lawerance was her father. The son you found born in orange co, nc in 1955. Would you know more about him? I know there was a son by the name of Butch Penland born aug. 16,1955. Could this be him? Any info you find on this family could you please send it to me. That brother is the only one we haven't found yet.

On the NC birth records for Buncombe County, NC.....it is showing a Lawrence Pritchard Penland born June 12, 1921 to Lela Altha Estella Penland in Upper Hominy township. He died on June 27, 1986 in Buncombe Co. NC. He was 65 and his marital status was 'divorced'. I also found a birth for a son of Lawrence Pritchard Penland (born in Orange County, NC) in 1955. Don't know if this is the same Lawrence Pritchard Penland you are speaking of or not.

I found a Henry A. Penland who died on April 13, 1922, but he was in Dobbs County, NC when he died. It gives his birth year as 1873. Do you know who his wife was?

Looking for parentage of Callie Penland. She was born in Jan 1888 in either Buncombe or Haywood Co. On her death cert. her son put down her father as unknown and mother as Louise Penland. Callie married Oscar G. Anderson of Beaverdam, Haywood CO. around 1905/1906. Does anyone researching North Carolina Penlands have Callie in their history?

If this is the same Henry A. Penland,the date of death is correct. I have his birth year as 1872, which I'm not postively sure of. We think the A. is for Absoleum. He was married to Gillie Ann Ball. When he died, she married S.E. Boyd. Hopes this helps. Email me at cwalton4444@yahoo.com. Cheryl

We have family in Texas. Ruth Ann Penland Fulcher of Asheville NC and her sister Mary Alice Penland Crook are outside Houston in a town called Alvin. They are my dads sisters. I am Don Penland of Hickory NC. I was born in Asheville but my family migrated to Statesville where I grew up.

I live in Hickory, N.C. My father was born in Buncombe Co. The son of Lewis Penland and descendant of Henry Penland of 1623. His son John Newton Penland moved to Buncombe Co. thus starting the Penland line of NC. My father has a twin named David R. Penland. I have several cousins. I have a sister and in mother in Statesville, N.C. Sonya Trivette Penland and Annette Ballew Penland. My father passed away in Sept. '07. I am just searching to visit our family history.

Harvey Monroe Penland married Patience Mahalia Moore
they had 10 children.
His parents were George Penland and Rachel Moore.
Rachel was the daughter of William Moore and Margaret Patton.
George was the son of Robert Penland and Elizabeth Brank.
