Hi Stacey, I can't help much with the Penmans. The relationship is through Mary Smith, niece of my grandfather, who married a Thomas Penman in 1903 in Scotland. They had 6 children (Jean, Alexander, Thomas, Margaret, James and John). They emigrated to the U.S. in 1928, settled in Detroit. One of their granddaughters, Mary, lives in Arizona. You can contact her through the Message Board; look for PENMANSHIP. She will probably be able to help you. Good Luck. Agnes Pavelko

Their daughter Mildred was my grandmother. Helens maiden name was Seymour I believe. Your really good at this, I'm just a rookie at searching. Please check your email. :)

Hi,
I saw your post on ancestory.com regarding your Penman family.
Your post caught my attention when you wrote that your Grandmother was born in Johnsville. I live in Reno and have spent a lot of time up at Graeagle and never knew of Penman Peak so immediately did a little research on it. There was also a Penman Peak Lumber Company. My husband's Grandmother was a Penman born in Scotland, so most of my Penman's are from Scotland, a few in England. I do a lot of genealogy research on the Penman family. Anyway I did take a look at the 1900 census which led me to more census research and found your William & Helen Penman in the 1910 in Johnsville, Robert & Mary 1920 in Sparks and 1930 in Sparks, their son Herbert is living with them. Also found William, son of Robert and Mary Ann Penman in 1880 census Jamison City, Plumas County. 1870 Quartz, Plumas County, 1860, Sierra Valley, Plumas County. I also found Mary Penman in the 1910 census Johnsville, widowed, owning confection shop, age 80. It says in this census that she immigrated in 1840, but she couldn't have been married yet as she was only 10 years old. Do you know her maiden name? I can't find a immigration date for Robert in any of the census'. Looked in some Kentucky records as that is where William states he was born but couldn't find anything. Do you have any idea where in England Robert was from?
You have me interested in this family now as it is very interesting there is a PENMAN PEAK just up the road? Where do you live?
Kathy
etakathy@aol.com

My Great Grandfather William Penman was born in Kentucky, June 1851. (his parents born in England) Was married to Helen, who was born in June 1868. Their daughter my grandmother Mildred Olive Penman was born April 29, 1899 in Johnsville Calif. I was always told that Penmans Peak in Plumas County was named after my Great Grandfathers family. I was also told that he was known for making snow shoes. He and Helen had 6 children from what I get from the 1900 Census.
Any information you have on my Great Grandfather would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Dear Terina

It's nice to hear from you. I do have a download of Grace Kennie's DC 1933 which I've attached. The informant on Grace's DC was Robert McNeil, son-in-law, who married her daughter Grace in 1925.

I've also downloaded James Penman and Jane Hunter's MC 1865 which I've attached too. However, James' parents are given as George Penman and Isabella Penman m.s. Penman.

The Penman One Name Study has James' parents listed wrong. James, according to the 1881 Census return, was born in Fifeshire, Dunfermline (not Old Monkland, Lanark as stated in the Study). 1881 Census return, attached, also showing Grace in 1881 aged 16 just before she married Henry Kennie.
On the MC, also attached, Henry's name is spelt Kenny or Kenney.

If you've already got these certificates, just delete them. If not, and you've any trouble deciphering them, just let me know and I'll transcribe them. I used to be a Manager in charge of a government typing pool and reading handwriting was one of my "skills".

Now, we're not related at the Penman point I had previously thought but we are undoubtedly related as my Penmans go back through Fifeshire, Dunfermline, too.

I hope it's OK to attach the certificates to this post. Look forward to hearing from you.

best wishes from Edinburgh

Pat

PS. Where are you located?

Dear KerrKennie

I'm descended from New Monkland Penmans also. I found Grace Penman Kennie's Death Certificate on ScotlandsPeople and it shows her parents as James Penman and Jane Hunter.

Have you seen the Penman One Name Study? It is run by Barb Bennett from Canada, also a Penman. There is a Grace Penman on it born 1865 New Monkland whose parents are listed as James and Jane Hunter Penman.

According to the Penman study James Penman was the son of Peter Penman born Cockpen, Midlothian in 1813 and, amazingly, I found that Peter Penman and my great great grandfather James Penman were brothers. This information means we could be distant cousins.

There is also a Terina Smith looking for information on Grace Penman on Genes Reunited. Would she be a relative of yours. If so maybe you could pass her this info.

Look forward to hearing from you.

best wishes from Edinburgh, Scotland

Pat Reid
daughter of Jane Carrick Penman whose father, Thomas Carrick Penman was also born in New Monkland, Lanark.

Don't know how much help I can be to you. The penman's that i am researching are of African American descent and as far as I can tell did not originate in Scotland. Not to say that eventually I won't end up there somewhere since it seems that lots of penman's are from there. Still very early in the search for me. Would love to keep in touch just in case our paths do eventually cross.

You said your grandfather was Thomas, was his father Alexander; mother, Margaret Tait? If so, how much information do you have on them? I received a response to my query from another Ancestry subscriber and she had a lot of information that you would be interested in. I don't know how to forward it on to you (without retyping that is), but will try to find out the procedure. You also mentioned that your grandfather, father and Margaret left Scotland in 1928. I assume then that your father married after going to Detroit. Are you Penmans still in Michigan?

Thanks. The information you sent is definitely part of my family. I found the marriage license for Mary Smith and Thomas Penman when in Scotland last July and have put off researching the Penman side until now. Mary was my grandfather's niece, daughter of his eldest brother Thomas and Jane Wilson. My grandparents, John Smith-Bethea Gibson, emigrated in 1882 and the family members weren't too interested in their ancestry until a couple of years ago. My cousin, George, and I are now playing "catch-up," and we are need to move quickly because he is 83 and I am 78. Thanks again for your response.

I have just had a response to my query that Thomas and Mary had 6 children, they did have a son John. What do you know about John? Where was he born? Parents' names? Any info you have may help to make a connection. I will forward whatever I find on John to you.

I have a copy of marriage license for Mary Smith and Thomas Penman dated 20 November 1903; both were 22 yrs. Thomas' parents were Alexander, coalminer, and Margaret, maiden name Tait (?); Mary was daughter of Thomas Smith, coalminer, and Jane, maiden name Wilson. Jane died in 1900. Witnesses were William Penman and Janet (akd Jeanie) Smith. Mary's father was my grandfather's eldest brother. Great grandparents were Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Stafford. I have been to Scotland 3 times; have photos, much info if you are interested. I live in Ocala FL; have son in Wixom, MI. If any of this sounds familiar to your records, can we exchange email addresses?

I posted a message this morning with subject heading Mary Smith--Thomas Penman; will try to repeat it here: Mary Smith was born in 1881 in Slamannan, Stirling; the fifth child of Thomas Smith and Jane Wilson. Her father and my grandfather, John Smith, were brothers; sons of Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Stafford, which means Mary and my father were first cousins. I have a copy of the marriage license for Mary and Thomas Penman. I would like to have information on their children and descendants. You said you visited the graves of Thomas Penman's parents in Scotland. Where was that? Was it the cemetery in Slamannan next to the church? I checked out your Family Tree this morning and I think I might have information that you can use. I will try to get it to you this afternoon. Do you ever use Scotlands People for research? I have found their records good, but there is a charge. I will be back to you later today. Are we allowed to tell where we live on this site?
Agnes Smith Pavelko

Not sure that I have what you are looking for, but...my grandfather was a Thomas Penman, was married to Mary Smith. They were from Slamannan. Don't know when they were married. Both born in 1881. They had 6 children: Jean (1905?), Alexander, 1/20/07, my father, Margaret (1909?), Thomas, James, and John. All are now deceased. They, at least my grandfather, father, and Margaret left Scotland and went to Detroit, Michigan approximately 1928. The rest of the family followed later.

Hope this helps, please keep me posted.

Mary M. Penman

My father did marry after he came to this country. Although my mother wa also Scottish, they had not known each other in Scotland. There are no more Penmans in Detroit. I have no other information, and would appreciate anything you can send.

Mary Penman

I have found quite a few errors in his data and I am correcting them as I find them.

Pat can you send me a copy of James Penman and Jane Hunter MC 1865 so I can correct the One Name study information. The attachments you mentioned in your message here do not seem to appear. What button is used to display them.

Terina I will be very grateful if you are willing to share Penman certificates with me.

Barb Bennett (nee Penman)
Penman One Name Study

Penman in my database born c 1875, North Shields, Northumberland, England

From the information you gave I suspect this is your John Watson Penman.

With a little more information such as your grandparents names or the birth date of John Watson Penman we can maybe help you more.

Barb Bennett (nee Penman)
Penman One Name Study researcher

I did a little research as I have many Penmans in Scotland in my family so wanted to see if your Penmans could belong to my Penmans but I can't find a connection but here is what I did find:
Thomas Penmnan married Mary Smith at The Manse in Slammanan, Stirlingshire, Thomas was a coal miner and they were both age 22. Witnesses were William Penman and Janet Smith. Thomas' parents: Alexander Penman, coal miner and Margaret Tait. Mary's parents: Thomas Smith, coal miner and Jane Wilson (deceased).
Alexander Penman & Margaret Tait married 31 Dec 1880, Slamannan, Stirling, both age 32, Margaret was a widow (no mention of previous spouse). Witnesses were John Barr & Madgaline Barr. Alexander parents: Thomas Penman, coal miner (deceased) & Helen Easton. Margaret's parents: James Tait, coal miner (deceased) and Jane Ballantyrie.
Thomas Penman & Helen Easton married 1 Dec 1845, Airdrie or New Monkland, Lanarkshire. The only James Tait marriage I found was to Jane Ballantine 1 Jun 1847, Carriden, West Lothian. It states Jane was from Polmont.
I did find the death of Helen Easton Penman 3 Jun 1911 Tranent, East Lothian, County of Haddinton, age 79, widow of Thomas Penman, she died at Thorntree Terrace, Meadowmill. Her son, Alexander Penman of 16 Crown Square, Prestonpas, East Lothian, was the informant. This death record states her parents as James Easton, coal miner, and Magdalen Hunter.
All this information was confirmed at scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Hope some of this helps.
