Searching for ancestors of James W. PENNINGTON (or variation) who was born somewhere in England reportedly on 22 Jan 1807 and died in Waukon Allamakee Co., Iowa on 27 May 1893. He was married twice. First to a Catherine who died 10 Sep 1848 in Arcadia, Wayne Co., NY. He married second a Cornelia or Carolina DRAKE (is this her maiden name or married name?) 1 Jan 1849 in Arcadia, Wayne Co., NY. He had many children.

Here's everything I have so far on him and his daughter Ann Elizabeth PENNINGTON McDOWELL who was the end of this line for my research:

Descendants of James W. PENNINGTON

Generation 1

1. JAMES W.1 PENNINGTON was born on 22 Jan 1807 in England. He died on 27 May 1893 in Waukon, Allamakee, Iowa, USA. He married CORNELIA DRAKE on 01 Jan 1849 in Arcadia, Wayne, New York, USA. She was born on 01 Mar 1808 in Canandaigua, Ontario, New York, USA. She died on 04 Sep 1886 in Waukon, Allamakee, Iowa, USA.

Notes for James W. PENNINGTON: James Pennington was a lawyer.

Some records say that he had a first wife, Catherine. And that Cornelia and he were m. 1 Jan 1849 in Arcadia, Wayne, New York

I'm looking for descendants of this James W. Pennington to solve the mystery of his daughter Emma Cornelia, my husband's great-great grandmother.

James W. was born in England on January 22, 1807, died in Waukon, IA on May 27, 1893.

He immigrated to upstate NY, probably in the early '20s to work on the Erie Canal. He married Catherine in the late '20s, and they had seven children, living in Arcadia, Wayne County, NY.

When Catherine died in 1848, he married Cornelia DRAKE in 1849. They had one more daughter, Libbie.

The family subsequently moved to northern Indiana, then settled in Waukon, Iowa in the late '50s.

Emma Cornelia was born January 22, 1863 or 1864. That's the mystery: Cornelia is too old to have been her natural mother, even though the records all say she is. I'd like to find out more about her siblings and their families to see if one of them might have been the birth mother or father.

There are so many Penningtons out there, it's impossible for me to find these siblings' lines. Has someone out there researched their roots back to James W. and can tell me more about them?

Hi,

Just to give you some context to my query about the Waukon Standard:

My husband's great-grandmother, maiden name Emma Cornelia PENNINGTON was born in "Iowa" about 1863, according to census records for her family. Her "parents," James W. PENNINGTON, blacksmith and lawyer, and Cornelia (DRAKE) PENNINGTON, had moved to Iowa from Arcadia, Wayne Co., New York between 1850 and 1860. I have wonderful census and NYGenweb information on them going back to 1830, and there's every indication that her parents lived in Waukon until they died, sometime in their 70s or later, after 1881 (my last piece of data). She later married Arthur C. RICHMOND and they moved to Sioux Falls, where their four daughters were born.

The small problem with Emma Pennington is that her mother Cornelia was 56 years old when she was born. Her father had been married previously

in NY and had a passle of kids much older than she, so I'm wondering if she wasn't one of their natural children adopted by her grandparents. I certainly haven't had time yet to search for birth certificates or anything, but it seems to me that when they told the census taker she was born in Iowa, that might not have been true, and looking for birth certificates without some other mention of her birth (like in the newspaper) would perhaps be a pointless thing to do.

But the Waukon Standard doesn't go back far enough for me (thanks to all who responded with details on how to get it), so I did a search for other newspapers of Waukon and Lansing, pre-1900--and the next message shares the results of that with all of you. (Please read all the cautions before you get too excited!) Now all I have to do is go to Iowa to look at the microfilms ...

Cheryl Tarsala

The following is as complete a list of the Allamakee county officials, from the organization of the county to the present time, as it is possible to produce at this day, it being borne in mind that the early records are very incomplete, as stated in the account of the first elections.

The year first mentioned against each name generally indicates the year of election, though in most cases possession of the office was taken the first of January following, except in the very early years.

1862 Annual Assessments, Allamakee Co.

Persons in Division No. 12 of Collection District No. 3 of the State of Iowa

A-G H-M N-Z Notes:

- Deciphering the old handwriting was at times nearly impossible. The assessor's 'fancy' handwriting makes it difficult to tell the difference between an uppercase 'O' & 'D' , 'I' & 'J' and a 'C' & 'G'. I have done the best I can, but there are most certainly errors.

- The 'notes' section gives other possible spellings when I was completely unsure.
- The assessor's name is given as John J. Taylor, but the entries are clearly 3 different styles of handwriting.
- The assessments appear to have been done Sept. - Dec. 1862 but this is very unclear on the microfilm.
- This likely is not a complete tax assessment for 1862

THE WAUKON SCHOOLS (pg 341-348)
Early School History
Miss Jessie Lewis

The first school of Waukon was out east of town at what is known as the Four Corners-a little log schoolhouse. Mr. D. D. Doe taught there in 1853. Then in the winter of 1854-5 L. O. Hatch taught in town in what is now Nelson Maxwell's house. It stood then about where E. Dillenberg's residence now stands. It was a private house, Mr. Israel owning it and living upstairs the family's egress and ingress being through the schoolroom.

In 1855 a schoolhouse was built and Charles Jenkins was one of the carpenters. It stood about where the Sister's school now is. It was mad on the usual plan, with a front door opening into a long hall and a door at each side, one for girls and one for boys, and what an ignominious punishment it was for a girl to be sent out into the cold hall to meditate on her sins. Boys were not sent out; they got a thrashing then and there, provided the teacher could do it. The seats inside were in four rows, the first row large, the next smaller and so on down..... November 8, 1862, the independent district of Waukon was erected, comprising all of sub-district No. 8 in Makee township; the south half of section 25, southeast quarter section 26, northeast quarter section 35, and all of section 36 in Union Prairie; and section 6 and west half section 5, in Jefferson township. The first election of school officers in this independent district was held November 29, 1862, resulting as follows: W. K. McFarland, president; E. B. Lyons, vice president; J. R. Brown, secretary, and Jacob Shew, treasurer. Directors: J. B. Plant, one year; A. A. Griffith, two years (Mr. Griffith later a noted elocutionist in Chicago, died in Palmyra, Wisconsin, June 19, 1889), and J. W. Pennington, three years. The independent district was formed with a view to effect a transfer of the Allamakee college building to the district, in which to establish a graded school, and in December a committee was appointed to wait upon Professor Loughran with that purpose. In February, 1863, a proposition of Professor Loughran was rejected, and an attempt was made to secure the new court house, then standing vacant…..

Notes for Cornelia DRAKE:

Her father was most likely Anthony or Samuel DRAKE if that was her maiden name and not a name from a first marriage.

James W. PENNINGTON and Cornelia DRAKE had the following child:

Notes for William Andrew McDOWELL:

From: "McDowell Family History Pennsylvania and Points West" by Doug McDowell, published 2004:

"William moved from Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., Wisconsin to Waukon, Allamakee Co., IA, along with his parents, at age 16, in about 1866.

The 1870 U.S. Census shows William and Elizabeth living in Maker Twp., Allamakee Co., IA, with Elizabeth's parents, James and Cornelia Pennington. Then on the 1880 U.S. Census they appear in Ingham Twp., Franklin Co., IA. Since the 1890 U.S. Census was destroyed by fire we are not sure where they were, but the 1900 U.S. Census has them in Springwater Twp., Rock Co., Minnesota. From there the 1910 U.S. Census has them living in the North Ward, City of Luverne, Rock Co., Minnesota. An article in the Pipestone newspaper says they moved from Iowa to Minnesota in 1885 where they resided in Spring Water Twp.

They were both heavily involved in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows holding very responsible offices. William was a Grand Patriarch of Minnesota I.O.O.F.; other positions held were P.G. Myrtle Lodge No. 67, P.G.P. Luverne Encampment No. 11, Member Canton Luverne No. 19, Jasper Stone Rebekah Lodge No. 80 and Lieut. Col. 2nd Reg. Minn. P.M.
