Edward moves to Lee County, Virginia sometime in the 1790's. The area in which he owned land and lived is now called Pennington Gap. Edward is listed in the Bastardy Bonds of North Carolina with an illegitimate child named Ann by Agnes Little. This child is recorded in the 1800 Ashe County, North Carolina census with Micajah Pennington and Rachel Jones. It is assumed that she died at a young age because there is no further record of her.

Edward lived to be 97 years old and was the father of eleven children. Most of these children stayed in Lee County, Virginia, however some of his descendants lived in Tennessee and Kentucky.
Elgar John Pennington, Jr. obit, d. April, 2009

Elgar John Pennington, Jr.
COLORADO — April 21, 2009, Jack Pennington (Elgar John Pennington, Jr.) died peacefully at age 88 in Grand Junction, Colorado where he had been living with Helen Haas, his partner of more than twenty years.

Jack is survived by three children and a grandson, Bill Pennington, 58, of Galveston, John Pennington, 64, of Wayne, New Jersey, Susan Cassanelli, 61, of Havertown, Pennsylvania; and her son David Cassanelli, 19, who is attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Jack was predeceased by his wife Mary Jane and his son Charles, both of whom died in the early 1980’s. He graduated from El Paso High School and then the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He moved to Galveston when his job on the design team of the Norden bombsight ended at the close of World War II. He was especially proud of this, his first job out of college, because the bombsight enabled Allied bombers to fly so much higher that casualties over Germany fell from 50% to 15%.

The Pennington family made their home at 1709 Rosenberg for about twenty years. In the late 1950’s, Jack took over the Pennington Buick Co. from his father. He was very active in community affairs, serving as president of both the Chamber of Commerce and the Red Cross volunteers, and leading fund raising efforts for the United Fund and Trinity Episcopal Church.

Mary Jane Pennington, Jack’s wife “Midge,” was instrumental in founding the Trinity School. Later she finished college at the University of Houston and began teaching English at Ball High School. The Menefees, Midge’s mother’s family, go way back in Texas. And the Pennington children are fond of claiming ancestors who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and fought at the Alamo. However, the research done by Bill (William Menefee Pennington) has been unable to prove anything specific.

Virtually every summer weekend the Penningtons could be found sailing small craft and barbecuing at the Boat Club on Offats Bayou. They were often joined there by the John Moore, Junior Jenkins, and Wallace Newton families – as well as many other friends.

Jack joined the Hughes Tool Company in Houston shortly before leaving Galveston. This job took the family to Houma, Louisiana; Laurel and Jackson, Mississippi; Duluth, Minnesota; and lastly, Denver, Colorado. Wherever he lived, Jack was known for a positive attitude and a good sense of humor. His children remember him for always being there with encouragement, a hug, and a joke, as well as reminders that honesty and happiness are more important than money.

A short funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on May 9, at Trinity Church. The family will be available afterwards with refreshments for an hour or two and requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Published May 3, 2009

The Daily News, Galveston, Texas

Hi, I am also a fifth generation descendant of Susanah Nancy Riggs and Timothy Pennington. I have been trying also to find out who their parents were. I descend from Mahala Pennington who I think is their daughter and married Jacob Henton Grider in Jackson County Tennesee. I have been to Monroe County Ky and to the Old Mulkey Meetinghouse trying to find where Timothy and Nancy are buried. Do you know if their daughter Mahala is the Mahala that married Jacob Henton Grider? I have never found proof. I could not locate a will or probate for Nancy or Timothy Pennington. Thanks for any advise or help. Carol

Hi, I descend from Mahala Pennington and she did not marry a John Robertson. She married Jacob Henton Grider in 1809 in Jackson County Tenn. I believe that the mix up has come about by a letter that states "these daughters married Guder AND John Robertson. Guder is really Grider and Lora Pennington married John Robertson. It seems like everyone has picked this up wrong and I could not figure out how my Mahala fit in the family until I read that letter by Robert Elijah Pennington written in 1941.

POW/MIA Korean War, PENNINGTON

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier:EUGENE PENNINGTON
Born: 1922
Date of loss: Dec. 1, 1950
Home of Record: Los Angeles, Calif

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I did a quick check of the PRA's master database (known as the John French Master File or JFMF) and found some informaiton that may help. I have created an Adobe Reader file (pdf) for you that has 3 Family Group reports. It is titled "Family of Benajah Pennington b 1 Jan 1724-25-Unknown Group.pdf". I can send it to you via e-mail if you want the file. If you do, please send me your e-mail address in a private e-mail message. You can send it to me at RD1@PenningtonResearch.org.

It starts with Benajah Pennington b 1 Jan 1724-25 and lists his family including one William Pennington, b. bet 1741 and 1744. Then it lists one of his children, Joannah Pennington, b. 25 Sep 1765, d. 2 Mar 1821, m. aft 1788, sp. John Spencer, b. 1769, d. 1853 and 1 child for them, Elizabeth Spencer.

I also checked Abigail Caudill and found her sp. was William Pennington, b. 3 Nov 1765, d. abt 1844. He is the progenitor of PRA Family Group 28. There is no child named Johanna Pennington listed for their marriage.

I hope this helps.

Gene Pennington
Research Director
Pennington Research Association, Inc.
www.PenningtonResearch.org
Hi,

I am conducting some research for my great-aunt on her ancestor, Matilda Colley Pennington. She is the sister to Jesse Colley Pennington.

You can learn more by going to the Pennington Family web site. They list the families by groups. Jesse and Matilda are children of Jesse Pennington and Rebecca Colley. They are discussed in the Family Group 14 article: http://www.penningtonresearch.org/family_groups/fg2000-14.ht...

Good luck!

Mary Jane Pennington born 1842

I am trying to find more information on my 3x great-grandmother. Her name was Mary Jane Pennington and she was born in Illinois about 1842. She married a man named John C. Dallas. They had at least five children:

William R. born 27 November 1858 in Missouri
Aaron W. born about 1862 in Missouri
Effie Jane born 20 January 1864 in Iowa
George C. born 23 October 1869 in Iowa
Silsby S. born 26 December 1872 in Iowa

Where an exact birthdate is given, information comes from the death certificates.

By 1900, John had married his second wife, Mary (Marie?) who was from Prussia.

In 1860, the family was in Bates County, Missouri. In 1870 and 1880, they are in Appanoose County, Iowa. I suspect that they were in Gates County, Nebraska in 1885. In 1900, they are in Rawlins County, Kansas. In 1910, they were in Clackamas County, Oregon.

I have information indicating that Mary's father may have been a William Alexander Pennington and Mary's mother may have been Martha Biggs.
