Penroses in Yorkshire
I am researching my Penrose family in Yorkshire. The earliest "resident" Penroses I have come across in Yorkshire are 1) at Ingeleby Arncliffe, a Penrose working as a tenant on the manor in the 1460s and 2) a tailor called John Penrose at Beverley in 1485. The latter is mentioned in Star Chamber Proceedings. I have a feeling that John Penrose may have come to Beverley from London as there was a burgeoning wool trade in Beverley at that time but I hope I am wrong and that he came direct from Cornwall. There is a collection of Penrose material in the British Library which comprises old letters, crests and other miscellaneous information put together by Dr Charles Penrose when he stayed in Cambridge UK to carry out some research. Given that Penrose is either a Cornish or Welsh name, the perennial question is, just when did the Penroses first go to Yorkshire and why. In fact, that question is one that occurs at least once in Mr Penrose's collection. At that time the earliest anyone had got back to was some Penroses who for some reason were located in Wheldrake in Yorkshire. There was a dispute over some common land with some of the inhabitants of an adjoining settlement called Escrick and at least one Penrose was mentioned as being involved in the altercation. Can anyone assist?
