I have no idea how I missed you. My grgrandfarther's name was James Percival (son of James Percival who married Mary Jane Nobles). I have always hit a brickwall at this point. I have been in contact with THouston on a few occasiona via email. She sent me as she has probably sent you the family history she has gathered over the years. Could you please shed some light on James Percival and Mary Jane Nobles....my grgrandparents left the South and came north. This is where the family stories get a little confusing. When did he come to the U.S.? Why was he an indentured servant? What was his parents name? My goal is to collect as much information to pass on to my children and grandchildren.

Seeing your post from a few years ago, I thought that I would reply.I am trying to find out more about a Henry F Scott Percival, born in the 1870s, who had a father Henry Frank Percival. The family was from Northumberland.I believe that Henry junior was my grand-father, although my line may be a bit of a surprise to the rest of his official family!
If this rings any bells with anyone, do get in touch.
Thanks.Annabel.

I am looking for a Alexander Percival born about 1761 in either England or Ireland. He seems to be the earliest Percival in the Leitrim /Longford area of Ireland and we have no idea where he came from. His sons were probably Thomas, John, William,Arthur and Samuel and daughters and grand daughters....Elizabeth and Frances. They were protestant and most of them were farmers except the first Alexander who died in 1860 and had been in the constabulary at least some of his life.
Does anyone have these names in their families?

There is a marriage recorded at St Giles, Colchester on 9 March 1788 between Edward Pasfield and Susanna Evans. Percivals were often recorded as Pasfield, or something similar, in those days.
It is known that Susannah Percival is shown in the 1851 census as having been born in Great Tey c1770. Was she Susanna Evans? Quite possibly yes, as there is a baptism for a Susanna Evans at Great Tey on 10 Dec 1769, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Evans.
Furthermore, one of the witnesses to the marriage had the surname Blackwell, a name that was prominent in Great Tey!
It does seem likely that this was the marriage of Edward and Susannah Percival, although perhaps the evidence is not absolutely conclusive!
John P

Hi Katherine

Yes, Ringtail Farm is indeed still there. The family do seem to have a number of branches in the area. I was there last summer and there are a number of Percival/Percifull gravestones in the churchyard although there are apparently no living Percivals in the area any more.

Best wishes

Martin

Anna Maria Perceval

Hi,

I have a Miss Anna Maria Perceval of Knightsbrook, co. Meath, who married Colonel (later Major-General) Thomas Hawkshaw/Hawkeshaw of the East India Co. in 1807 in London. He died 1819 in London and she died 1854 in Perth, Scotland.

Thomas' eldest daughter from his marriage to Gertrude Christiana Hatfeldt (nee van Renen), Charlotte Wilhelmina Hawkshaw/Hawkeshaw, married Westby Percival of Knightsbrook, co. Meath on 14 Jan 1813 at Marybone/Marylebone Church. Charlotte died a widow in 1856.

They had a son, Westby Hawkshaw Perceval, who married Sarah Brook Bailey, in 1851 at Southsea, Hampshire. Westby and Sarah went to New Zealand and had a son along the way, Westby Brook Perceval in Launceston, Tasmania in 1854. He married Jessie Maria Rose Johnston on 11 May 1880.

I can't figure out how Anna Maria Perceval and Westby Perceval are related. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks for your help

Regards

Olwen
i too am looking for more info on sir james percival. i have a short nnote on how he got the title sir but it isnt proven. my frustration is in finding who 3 repeated names of children are listed as his. john, james, elizabeth. born in the mid 1600's+. my records show that he didnt get married until 1671 and had a john, james and eliz. aft that time. i cant find any documentation that they existed as far as the dates/names/places i have listed. perhaps they belong to another mother before mary rainsford? and they all died or were sold as slaves or something??? anyone know if they exist or are they an assumption?

Hi Katherine

I was in Bucks County Archives today and found out that Walter Eli's father was William Percifull/Percival. Walter was born in 1863 and his father in 1839. Ann Percival it turns out was William's elder sister, born a year earlier.

I looked through the original North Crawley Marriages Register from 1837 to 1955 and Ann's marriage is in it to Reuben Glidewell on Nov 6 1860.

It would be very interesting to compare further notes with you as you have clearly gone back a long way! I can find no Percival in Chester at that time. Later,an Orrin E. Percival b. 1802, married a Maria Toogood. Therefore I thought possibly Hannah was sister to this Orrin.
Re: Percivals from Chappel Essex

I am a descendant of James Percival (1802) through his son William (1829), and I have also failed to find the marriage of Edward and Susannah, c1788, which might have enabled the family to be traced back further.
There were Percivals living in various villages in the northern part of Essex. Edward might have come from one of these places, but the best "match" I have found so far is an Edward Percival, baptised Gestingthorpe in 1764. Our Edward was recorded as aged 51 when he died in 1818, but it is always possible that his age could have been wrongly stated, as most people were illiterate and innumerate in those days. Our Edward might have been the Gestingthorpe man, but it seems unlikely that this can be proved conclusively! It is also possible that he was not an Essex man at all.
According to the 1851 census, Susannah (recorded as "Percifull") was born in Great Tey, but there is definitely no marriage for Edward Percival and Susannah X recorded there, nor at Chappel or other nearby places.
I think there are several of us looking, maybe someone will find something one day!
John P
There was an Isham however.

What is the info about James earning the title "Sir".
-Elizabeth Percival, daughter of James & Mary Rainsford Percival was born in 1675, legitimate daughter of James & Mary. She married Joseph Ashley.
-James Percival, Jr. born 1671, married Abigail Robinson. I descend from this line.
-John Percival born about 1680, married Mary Bourne.

I have not heard this story of how James, Sr. received his so-called title. He does appear, however, in Plimoth Court records as being fined for stealing a boat in Virginia and sailing it to Massachusetts.

Hello again,

There's something else I neglected to mention, regarding the marriage date of Lt Sir James Percival and Mary Raynsford Bassett Percival.....

I happened on, "Immigrants to New England", one section is about Edward Rainsford, father of Mary (above). She was the twin to Josiah, and children of his first wife. Following the listing of children from the first marriage of Edward, it is noted under Mary:

b 1 June 1632; bp 17 June 1632; m "by about" 1652 to William Bassett, son of (blank); m (2) "by about" 1671 James Percival (eldest known child b Sandwich 18 Jan 1671/72

The marriage year, 1671, is "about". If there's any documentation stating they were married is this year, most of us would certainly like to be pointed in that direction.

Happy Hunting!

Hello,

What you located on Eliz and John may very well be a sib, as James does name a child John. I'm not inclined to believe there are 2 sets of children, though. Where did you see the sources?

Lt (Sir) James Percival was in Virginia prior to MA. There's an intersting story as to how he arrived in MA; taking a ship and sailing it there. Details of this incident can be read by making a search on the net. It may be at Virginia State Library.

I also found a record for South Carolina 1670-1674:

Primary Immigrant, Andrew Percival, wife Essex (possibly Elizabeth), son Andrew, son James and dtr Mary.
I'm more inclined to research this data.

You can contact me,
old_buck_house@msn.com

James and Mary Raynsford Bassett Percival are my 9th great grandparents.

Hello,

I don't recall being alerted to your message, so my apologies.

Well, hang onto your information, as I have just been contacted by someone that seems to have different data on James 1749 vs James 1736, which is inline with your's.

James 1671 and Abigail Robinson are my 8th great grandparents. Lineage:

Lt (Sir) James and Mary Raynsford Bassett
James and Abigail Robinson
James and Elizabeth Bacon
Ebeneezer and Lucy Knowlton
Stephen and Content Morse
Stephen and Rebecca Honey
Stephen D. and Roxanna Blanchard
Alonzo Lee and Lydia Ann Austin Ramsdale
Stephen Edgar and Mary Elizabeth Hewes

In 2005, I ran across a Passenger and Immigration record, 1670-1674 for South Carolina. Listed:

Andrew Percival, wife Essex (possibly Elizabeth), son Andrew, son James and dtr Mary. I've not had a chance to delve into this at great lengths, but this could possibly be Lt Sir James' parents and sibs?????

You can contact me personally, old_buck_house@msn.com
Be happy to share.

Happy hunting,
Amorita
Re: Percival/Percifull - North Crawley, Buckinghamshire

Hi, I don't have a Walter in my tree but I'm sure we're talking about the same family.

My great great granny was Ann Percival from North Crawley, born 1838. Her father, D'Oily an agricultural labourer and lay preacher was born in 1812. His father, James had Ringtail Farm, which I beleive is still there. James was born around 1790 just down the road in Wavendon. I think his father was William born around 1765 also in Wavendon. His father, John was born in Newport Pagnell around 1727. His father was Edward, born around 1687, also from Newport Pagnell. His father's name was Thomas but that's all I know about him. Best wishes. Katherine Morris
