Jim,

It does look like that is a good possibility of a match.

No I am not (directly) related to John and Elizabeth PERRING, but my family does come from Devon, so it is possible that if I could search way way back there is a link. Nicholas Timothy PERING from Ugborough, Devon was my great great uncle.

The spelling of the surname varies PERRING or PERING, especially pre 1900.

It's all very interesting.

Martyn
Martyn-Thanks again. With your help, I think we have a very solid possibility.

There is a Nicholas PERRING, born abt 1860, the son of John and Elizabeth, living in Dittisham, Devon, England, in the 1861 and 1871 censuses. He is not present in Dittisham in 1881. Dittisham is ~10 km north of Dartmouth, which fits well with the envelope's postmark. Nicholas is shown as 11 months old in 1861. If the census was taken in April 1861, being 11 months old at the time of the census is consistent with a birth in Apr 1860.

The Elizabeth who died in 1905 was probably Nicholas's mother. Elizabeth is shown as 49 years old in 1871, making her 84 years old in 1905 when the envelope (a mourning envelope, indicating a death) was posted.

The 1905 envelope provides a clue to the area where Nicholas was born, and the envelope's posting coincides with the death of his mother.

Are you related to John and Elizabeth PERRING? His siblings were Elizabeth, Robert, John, Mary, Isach, and Susan Ann. Jim

Jim,

The registration of births was never 100% back then. There is also the possibilty that all the birth records for 1860 etc have not been fully transcribed yet onto freeBMD. I am a volunteer transcriber and I am currently working on 1939 births.

Another place you can look for further information is www.freecen.org.uk . I think you may be able to find where they were living at time of the 1891 census. I believe that the 1891 census records for Devon have been fully transcribed by the volunteers.

If you are a full member here you should be able to consult all the UK births, deaths & census results. Especially the 1901 UK census and determine where they lived in 1901.

Martyn

Thanks again Martyn. One of the deaths in Totnes in qtr of Sep 1905 (probably Elizabeth 84) may have prompted the letter being sent. I am stumped regarding the absense of Nicholas's birth. Jim

Jim,

I can find no trace of a Nicholas born in the Dartmouth area in Apr 1860. But from www.freebmd.org.uk in 4Q 1905, Totnes district, a Charlotte PERRING died 81 and a John PERRING died 83. If these lived in Dartmouth ... ?

Next, from www.familysearch.org the 1881 census lists

John PERRING, 62, Ag Lab, born in Dittisham, living at Halwell Village. Both places are near Dartmouth

John R. PERRING, 55, Shipwright H M Dockyd, born in Dittisham, living at 10 Hood St, Stoke Damerel (near Plymouth). Did he have a son who became the steamboat engineer?

Charlotte PERRING, 57, born in Dartmouth, living at Hanover Square, Dartmouth

Hope this is of some help.

Martyn

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Mar 1904 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perring Elizabeth 77 Kingsbridge 5b 147
Perring Susan Jane 48 Totnes 5b 121

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Mar 1905 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perring Frederick Thomas 0 Devonport 5b 239

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Jun 1905 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perring William James 42 Plymouth 5b 146

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Sep 1905 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PERRING Elizabeth 84 Totnes 5b 97
PERRING Gladys Marie 2 Totnes 5b 98
PERRING James Henry 20 Totnes 5b 89

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Dec 1905 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PERRING Alice Ellen 0 Kingsbridge 5b 129
PERRING Charlotte 81 Totnes 5b 113
PERRING John 83 Totnes 5b 114
PERRING William Richard 42 Newton A. 5b 99

Martyn-Thanks for your reply. A Nicholas Cridge PERRING, born in England, appears in the 1900 US census for Washington, Kitsap County, Port Blakely and in 1910 and 1920 US census for Washington, Thurston County, Olympia. His birth is shown as Apr 1860 in the 1900 census, and is consistent with his age in the other censuses. His arrival is shown as 1878 in one census and 1880 in 2 others, but I do not find a passenger list for him. He became a US citizen in 1884. He's shown in the censuses as a steamboat engineer, and in the 1889 Olympia directory as chief engineer of the steamer Skagit Chief.

The envelope sent to him from Dartmouth in 1905 is a mourning cover, so it's likely that someone related to Nicholas died in the Dartmouth area in 1905. Nicholas died in Olympia on 17 Jul 1946.

Do you have a record of a Nicholas born in the Dartmouth area in Apr 1860, and/or a PERRING death in 1905? Thanks again for your reply, Jim

That's a very interesting question.

Looking up biths, From http://www.freebmd.org.uk

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
PERRING Nicholas George Newton A. 5b 171 born 1Q 1877
PERING Nicholas Timothy Totnes 5b 193 born 1Q 1862
PERING Nicholas Newton A 5b 154 born 4Q 1888

Nicholas Timothy PERING was my great great uncle and I know that he was born in Ugborough, about 12 miles from Dartmouth. However in the 1901 census he was living in Torquay working as a house painter. He died in 1919 and as far as I know always lived in Devon.

So perhaps Nicholas George PERRING born 1877 is a more likely candidate? Then Nicholas PERING born 1888. Is one of them on a shipping list or USA immigration record?

It is a pity that you do not have the letter, because that might have vital clues to identify the person, especially his age.

All I can suggest is to find someone who can do a full look up on the UK 1901 or 1911 census (unfortunately my suscription has lapsed, so I cannot do this myself) and see if that yields a
Nicholas PERRING or Nicholas PERING living near Dartmouth, Devon.

Regards,
Martyn

Nicholas PERRING England > Olympia, Washington

I recently found an old envelope that Nicholas PERRING of Olympia, Washington received from Dartmouth, Devon, England in 1905. You can see the envelope on www.philgen.org (search on PERRING, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page). I want to determine if Dartmouth is the birthplace of Nicholas PERRING and if this envelope is helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy and have started the philgen website. I do not know if the letter that was in the envelope still exists.

Father: Thomas Peeke. Mother: Eleanor Jackson.

They must have married c1830, possibly around South Brent or Blackawton, but being pre 1837 I can find no information.

Yes! we are both on the same track. Rev.Charles Augustus believe it or not married Frances sister of the Rev.Henry Forster Welch who was married to Mary Dovaston Humphreys who was my great grandmother - big scandal! as Mary left him to run away with Edwin Arthur Perring and my grandfather was the result of this affair! Please contact me on my Email ruthnewby@realemail.co.uk as there is so much info I can give you and would love to compare our research. Sorry I cannot tell you much about Robert as although I did trace some relatives they have either since died or lost interest unfortunately. Did you know Charles Augustus married twice? I found this out on the 1901 Census recently. Thanks for Robert's date of birthand death another bit to add to my vast tree. I have a letter written by Eliza would you like a copy?

Thanks for the reply. He sounds like the Robert I'm investigating. I didn't know Jane Eliza wrote children's books! Do you know if any were published? One of Robert's other sons, Charles Augustus is my Great-great-great Grandfather. Since first posting I have found out more info on Robert. I believe he was christened on Aug 26th 1787 in West Alvington, son of Robert Perring and Elizabeth (nee Scoble). Died in Carlisle on October 4th, 1869. I also have quite a bit of other Perring info...

Hi
My Jane was born 1852 at South Huish [Malborough] Devon, England, to Thomas James Perring and Susannah Lamble. Thomas was also from Malborough and Susannah from Portlemouth.
Thomas's Parents and Thomas himself all had very large families [approx 12 children each] As I haven't been researching them that long, I don't know much about them yet, I have just got a list of names for them.
I vaguely remember seeing something about Dittisham but I cannot remember where at the moment. But it's not that far away from here so there is probably a connection somewhere.
Just a titbit for you Richard Perring[b1892] [supposed to be a 2nd cousin to my Father].married Lilian [Kitt] Cole[b.1891],They moved to Australia in the early 1900's. I have little bits of info on them.

She is perhaps mother of Mrs. Emily Gray, age 24 in 1861 Chertsey, Surrey, England census and also perhaps mother of Henry Paring?sp., age 36, in 1871 census of St. Pancras, London, England. Anna Perring, age 62, is listed in 1861 census of Chertsey, Surrey,England, living with family of George Gray. I am trying to determine if Anna, Emily and Henry are related to the Phineas England (surname) family of Chard, Somerset. Would like to hear from anyone researching or familiar with these Perring folks. It IS possible that my interpretation of the two censuses has created a relationship which does not, indeed, exist between Anna-Emily-Henry. Thank you.

I have just received my mothers birth cert. in which her mothers name was Bertha Susan Perring. She married John Patrick Dillon a Tailor/Journeyman from Cork Ireland around 1908 I don,t know the exact date as I was only twelve when she died back in the fifties. I am hoping that there might be a connection as she to came from Devon/Cornwall area. As I now live in Australia and have only one living sibling you can understand why I want to find out more about my mothers side of the family. Hope this is of some use Su James
