MUSCATINE, Iowa. Twyla S. Petersen, 88, of Muscatine, died Sunday, November 25, 2007, at Lutheran Homes. Memorial Service will be at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Reverend Mr. David Ivie, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Muscatine, will officiate. Private burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Muscatine, particularly its health and wellness ministry, to the Genesis Hospice, Lutheran Homes, or Muskie Band Boosters. Mrs. Petersen was born on February 27, 1919, in Muscatine, the daughter of D. Sheldon and Anna C. Richley Schreurs. She graduated from Muscatine High School in 1936, and attended the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport and Des Moines Still College, Des Moines. She was a member of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls Assembly No. 38, in Muscatine. Prior to her marriage she was employed, in various positions, with the Muscatine Journal, Woolworth's, and in the offices of Dr. Roy R. Pearson and Dr. Stella C. Pearson. She was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Muscatine, participating actively in its life and work, including attending its Sunday School, participating in its women's circles, and for many years chairing its annual rummage sale fund-raiser, as did her mother before her. She was married to the late Robert C. Petersen, a Muscatine attorney, on June 25, 1947. Following her marriage, she was entirely committed to her family, in all endeavors. She supported her husband in his work and political life. In particular, she helped organize and maintain the offices from which he practiced law. She was an expert typist and careful proofreader. She enjoyed building a home for the family, to which it moved in 1954. Taking for herself the title of Domestic Engineer, she performed all the tasks associated with that position description and others. She was a devoted caregiver to her parents, aunt, and husband during their final years. In particular, Mrs. Petersen enjoyed supporting school activities of all sorts, including raising money for and making band uniforms for Grant School, helping the Grant School principal and teachers with office tasks, and serving as Co-President of its Parent Teacher Association with her husband; raising money for and making band uniforms for West Junior High School; finding and making costumes for parades, plays and other performances; raising money for and purchasing marching band and concert band uniforms for Muscatine High School. She also served as a Cub Scout den mother and 4-H club leader. She tirelessly shuttled her children to music lessons and summer music camp in Iowa City. She enjoyed preparing special foods for all kinds of social events, and often presented gifts of home made treats to friends and neighbors. For many years, she attended countless football games, other sporting events, concerts, parent's weekends and other activities with her family, including memorable trips to bowl games with the Iowa Hawkeyes, marathons, tennis tournaments, and bar association meetings. While she always was most comfortable in Muscatine, she traveled extensively with her family, and enjoyed her residence in Naples, FL. Mrs. Petersen was an active volunteer in the political process, registering voters, campaigning for good candidates, and getting people to vote, in person or by absentee ballot, in local, state, and national elections. She was a participant, not a bystander, and her political judgment was astute and trusted. Survivors include a son, Stephen J. Petersen, and his wife, Janice, of Fayetteville, NC; a daughter, Ann C. Petersen, of Chicago, IL; a grandson, Sean J. Petersen, and his wife, Stephanie, and their children, Max and Maya Petersen of Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant sister, and husband.
====================
LETTS, Iowa - Ted Michael Petersen, 55, of rural Letts, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center.
A private family service will be held at the Wapello Cemetery.
The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello is providing the care and arrangements.
==================
MUSCATINE, Iowa - I. H. 'Pete' Petersen, 78, passed away on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2003, at Unity Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on January 3, 2004, at Grace Lutheran Church, 2107 Cedar Street, with Reverend Leif Pohl officiating. Mr. Petersen's ashes will be interred near Copenhagen, Denmark.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the following organizations, Grand View College, Des Moines; Lutheran Homes, Muscatine; the Danish Immigrant Museum, Elkhorn; or the charity if their choice. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of the local arrangements.
Pete was born on February 3, 1925, in Copenhagen, Denmark, the son of Erhard and Camilla Christensen Petersen. He was actively involved during the Nazi occupation of Denmark as a member of the underground resistance which had a great impact on him over his lifetime and came to be a defining moment in shaping his love of freedom and the responsibility he felt for those who had less in this county.
After World War II, Pete came to this country to complete his college education at Grand View College in Des Moines, which had close ties to the Danish culture and still does today. He met Evelyn Frost, a daughter of a Lutheran minister who also attended Grand View and they married on June 3, 1949, in his home country of Denmark.
The newly weds returned to live in Waterloo, where Pete was granted US citizenship in 1952. This was another defining moment in the life of this very proud man who believed in all the principles that this country had been founded on. He embarked upon a lifelong retailing career spanning more than 45 years working for several regional department stores in Iowa and North Carolina.
In 1963, he accepted a job as the General Manager of the Batterson Department store in Muscatine, which became a great success and ultimately led him to his dream of owning and operating his own retail store. He and his wife purchased the Town and Country Fabric Shop in 1968, which they operated for 17 years.
From the moment Pete arrived in Muscatine he shared a great passion with several other community and business leaders to make Muscatine a better place to live, raise families, and pursue careers. He told the Muscatine 'story' to everyone he spoke to no matter where he traveled in the world. He certainly wore the nametag 'Mr. Muscatine' whenever he was with great civic pride. Friends and family will also remember him as Muscatine's 'Victor Borge' for his quick wit and keen sense of humor.
Pete actively engaged and invested his time in many matters and organizations which he strongly believed in such as the Chamber of Commerce where he served in many capacities from two time past President to Assistant Manager following his retirement from retailing. When Pete finally retired from the business world in 1991, he was given the only lifetime membership ever awarded to a Chamber of Commerce member.
He was a charter member and active participant in the Greater Muscatine Development Corporation, which is dedicated to bringing more industry and commercial business to the city. During his tenure with the Chamber of Commerce, he served as the primary organizer and mentor for the Leadership Muscatine Program. He was a longtime member of the 33 Club, and as a member of the Muscatine Rotary Club, in 1990 he received the Rotary International's highest honor, The Paul Harris Fellowship Award, an award he was especially proud of.
Pete served on many committees, political campaigns both locally and nationally; special interest organizations such as United Way and was earnestly committed to numerous downtown beautification and development projects. Mr. Petersen's dream of an uninterrupted view of the Mississippi riverfront actually began years ago when he approached civic leaders with a vision and opened doors to negotiations with the railroads. This vision has finally resulted into one of Muscatine's finest public resources, the Pearl of the Mississippi Project and the developments of the Riverfront Implementation Team. His resume of civic involvement could cover pages upon pages, but Pete would still say, that the most important accomplishment in his life was to rename the Muscatine Bridge for Norbert Beckey, a man who also was committed to community service all his life and was considered Pete's mentor and one of his closest friends.
Pete's life was a testimony to the need for personal involvement, not waiting for someone else to do the job, and a constant enthusiasm about making Muscatine the best community in America to live.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of 54 years; two sons, David Petersen and his wife, Diane, and Paul Petersen and his wife, Jean, all residing near Chicago; and three grandchildren, Denee Anderson, and Steven and Drake Petersen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Arvid and Preben Petersen.
=================
BENNETT, Iowa -- Siegfried Petersen, 94, Tipton, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Cedar Manor Nursing Home.
POW/MIA Korean War, PETERSEN

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave San Francisco, Calif. as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier: FRED ALBERT PETERSEN, JR
Born: 1926
Date of loss: April 23, 1951 POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I am a descendent of Peter Petersen (~1829-1905). Peter left Schleswig-Holstein when it belonged to Denmark. He met and married Eliza Garrett in London where they had six children. In the 1861 census he is shown as a "Piano Forte maker". I have seen him described also as a "journeyman".
He became and english citizen but emmigrated on the "Royal Dane" to Rockhampton, Australia in 1870.
On the English marriage certificate his fahter is listed as John Frederick Petersen, a shipping agent.

Julius Petersen or Peterson, wife Franzeska and family

I just found the daughter of my 2 great grandfather--Franzeska Utschig--married to Julius Petersen/Peterson. Julius, according to New York census records, was born Jun 1834 in Hamburg; married about 1860, most likely in New York, and died before the 1910 census.

As per the 1900 and 1910 New York, Manhattan Borough, censuses, Franzeska had 9 children, 3 living. I found the following children: (1)John Peterson, born Jun 1861, New York; (2) Julius Peterson, born about 1865, New York; (3) William and/or Charles Peterson, born about 1869, New York; (4) Louis Petersen, born 15 Apr 1872, New York; (5) Harry Peterson, born Feb 1876, New York; probably died Apr 1963, New York; married Mary __ about 1897 and had 2 children--Harry Peterson, born Feb 1898, New York; and Florence Peterson, born about 1905, New York; Mary died before the 1910 census; (6) Mary Peterson, born May 1880, New York.

Julius immigrated about 1855, as per the census records; and Franzeska, his wife, immigrated about 1854/1856, as per the census records.

Anyone with information about this family, I would love to hear from.

By the way, Julius Petersen and Franzeska Utschig Petersen were first found on the extracted christening record of their son Louis (4th child) with their surname spelled PETERSEN. On most of the census records, it was spelled "son" on the end.

Mary

Hi there

I haven't done any ancestry for some years now but just decided to check. Unfortunately although our Christian names in the Petersen/Pedersen family are the same, they are not the ones I am searching for.

I have been told it is very difficult searching for Danish ancestors owing to the way they changed their surnames at will etc and one needs to pay a Danish expert to do the job.

Regards and happy searching

Des

Thank you for replying to my message. Unfortunately this isn't my family. My George or Jorgen was married to Marie Thomsen. He was however born in Augustenborg, Denmark. If you know of somebody that might have information on this family it would be very helpful. Thank You

Re: California Petersons

I have Petersens who moved from Chicago to Northern and Southern California, and at least one of them (my grandfather) identified himself as Scottish. None of them were truly Scottish, as genealogical research eventually proved. They were Danish.

Best thing to do is to use whatever tools are available to you, such as census or emigration records, to see how your grandparents or great-grandparents identified themselves when first in the USA. This may lead to a determination of their actual heritage.

Regards,
Debra
----
http://sakionline.net/familypage

Re: Petersen in Northern Ohio

Greetings. My grandfather, and his father, were Petersen's (sort of). My great grandfather Christian Lincoln (Sorensen) was from Denmark with his 3 older sisters Jean, Anna and Olie.

Their mother died giving birth to him and he was given to Sam & Jean Petersen (owners of the Petersen Farm) which was near where Hopkins International Airport would later be.

This would have been in or about 1896 (he was born in the US)

Not sire if this might help in your search, but try looking under Sam Petersen and see if there is any connection.

Petersen in Northern Ohio

Am looking for information on any Petersens in the Lake Erie/Northern part of Ohio. Engeline Petersen was born in Schleswig-Holstein in 1857 and came to the US (I'm assuming Ohio) in 1871 when she was 14. Since she was so young when she came I'm thinking she had to have come over with family. She married Niels Nielsen in 1874 in Sandusky, Erie or Ottowa co., and they moved to California. I've looked at the census for the area (Northern Ohio) in 1880 and there are quite a few Petersens/Petersons so I'm thinking there has to be some kind of connection. Does anyone have an Engeline (also spelled Angeline, Angelina, Engelina, Anglina, Englina, etc.) in their family tree or any Petersen connections in Northern Ohio in the 1870s? I'd appreciate any help anyone might be able to give... thanks!
