I have this story: Neil Gow was born in Scotland, son named George, married Mary Dunn in Scotland. They had one son, George Neilo Gow (or in another version, he is Thomas Gowman). They moved to Cornwall, England where George/Thomas was bound to a miller named Sangin. He was to remain there until 21 years of age. Mr. Sangin died when he was 20 and his daughter, Mary Sangin, inherited the fortune--and married George/Thomas. They had a son named George(aka Peter Hom) in Devonshire. He went to Plymouth at age 21 and married Ann Petherick, the squire's daughter, in 1818. Ann's parents "were landowners and stood next to nobility in line". Her parents' names were William and Catherine Petherick. Now, the details of these generations are a little sketchy when it comes to actual research. It seems like the first given name above is more reliable than the second, but I am dead-ended in research. The two stories came from the same family member who in his advanced age now denies any knowledge of either story, so I can't verify anything. George (1792-1865) and Ann had at least 6 children--Samuel, Thomas, Mary Ann, Catherine, Daniel, and Rebecca. The family immigrated to North America around 1834; they settled in Ohio, then moved to Ontario. Eventually Samuel and his family moved to Detroit. These lower generations (from Samuel) I have much information on; I would like to find someone who can help me find information on the Pethericks and possibly the Sangins. Since the Pethericks were from Plymouth, I thought this board might be of help. Petherick seems to be a fairly common name and George Gowman is everywhere. Can anyone help me?

Re: John and Levinia Petherick

Hi Joy

The story so far..
In Hatherleigh church there is John and Lavinia's gravestone, stating John PETHERICK died in 1888 aged 62 (which matches our 1826 date) and Lavinia PETHERICK died in 1894 aged 65 (I have pictures of all the PETHERICK gravestones there). However, on their marriage certificate of 2 August 1849 at Hatherleigh church it states that Lavinia HUNKIN was 'a minor' when they married..this does not add up as she would have been at least 18 at the time.
Anyway, John PETHERICK was registered as a blacksmith, as we know, and Lavinia HUNKIN as a dressmaker. John's father is stated as being William PETHERICK, blacksmith, and Lavinia's as Samuel HUNKIN. Witnesses were Anne PETHERICK and James HUNKIN.
William PETHERICK is stated as the main blacksmith in Hatherleigh in Pigott's business directory of 1844 (3 years before the marriage).
Now it gets a bit weird.I've gone through microfiches of the Hatherleigh records and there are two John PETHERICKs...sort of! In the records there is a John PETHERICK baptised 8 February 1826 whose parents are William and Anne PETHERICK with siblings Anne PETHERICK (1828)and Sarah PETHERICK (1831), and also a John PEDRICK baptised 8 February 1826 whose parents are William and Anne PEDRICK with siblings Anne PEDRICK and Sarah PEDRICK!!! Both have the same entry No of 677 but in slightly different handwriting. The children continued with the PETHERICK name when they married (Sarah PETHERICK on 17 April 1853, father William PETHERICK, blacksmith) This needs a bit more research in the Bishops records to confirm, but could be seen primo facia as a clerical error.

However, there is a William PEDRICK marrying an Anne VANSTONE on 20 February 1812, about the right time for our William and Anne. There are also a number of other PEDRICKs and PETHERICKs living in the parish throughout this period, with John and William being handed down successive generations. From another thread on this site to do with Elizabeth PETHERICK there is another John PETHERICK within the area of about the same age.
The PETHERICK name itself is much older, with references going back to 1500's in North Cornwall. I didn't take any more details of this PEDRICK/VANSTONE marriage at the time because I was after PETHERICKS, so I need to go back and root around some more on this one.
I think there are a number of scenarios to explore. It may turn out that our side of the family changed from PEDRICK to PETHERICK around this time, either due to a family shift away from the PEDRICKs or perhaps reverting back to the original name of PETHERICK following a period of illiteracy in the family when the name was only passed on orally (in a fast Devonshire accent the two surnames would sound fairly similar); or it is just an error in the recording by a vicar not from the area for the same reason as above, later corrected by John, Ann and Sarah when the opportunity arose on their marriages.
Hope this is useful. I'll add more on here as I find it. How far back are you with the YELLANDs/DIXONs?
Andrew
Hello Glenys

Yes, Elizabeth Jane, my great grandmother had a sister named Eliza, Eliza was born 1844 Devon, she married Henry Schlimme, he born Germany 1846. I have them married in Perth Ontario, Canada in 1866 and having six children, four females, two males born from 1871 to 1884. It must be the same family maybe one of our dates is amiss. I have birth record of four children, maggie, edgar, charles and Mary, and also a 1901 census of Perth, Ontario. I think we must be related. I have photos of some of the Petherick clan but not Eliza. I am in touch with two other Petherick relatives, one descended from Thomas Ismael and one from Naomi Petherick Stewart. Would love to share information! Candi

Three brothers, William, John and Daniel arrived in 1840, first to Darlington Twp., then settling at Petherick's Corners, located on Concession 9, Lot 20, Seymour Township. Another brother, James, arrived in 1848 and a sister arrived in 1870 with her husband and family.
What else do you know about your ancestors?
Andrew
Well I am really confused now. Here is the results from the 1861 census of Hatherleigh. John Pedrick was also a blacksmith in the 1841 census, but I know my ggrandmother said her father was a cobbler and that our john Petherick was married to Jane Slocum, well in the 1841 census the house next door is occupied by the Slocombe family with a daughter Jane who was 8 at the time.
Andrew

We might be looking for the same people or at least the same family. John petherick, a cobbler was Elizabeth Jane's father so I wonder if there might have been two John Pethericks. Mine came to the USA from Hatherleigh in 1856, Elizabeth Jane was born 1849. My John also born 1826ish was married to Jane Slocombe (Slocum) but I have seen yours also, married to Lavinia. Perhaps they were cousins. But my ggrandma EJ said her dad was a cobbler, also. Do you have any other information on Lavinia and John, who their parents were perhaps? Do you have any photos?? Fascinating. Thanks for writing. Candi

Hi. I'm also researching Petheicks in Hatherleigh. My greatgrandfather was John Petherick, a cobbler in Hatherleigh, born 1826ish. He is buried in the graveyard at Hatherleigh, died 1888 age 62. I thought his wife was called Lavinia d.1894 aged 65. I know he had a son called Hubert born 1858.
My late great aunt can remember visiting the shop at Hatherleigh which had a shoe over the door.

Does anyone have any information pre 1840 of my g.g.grandfather and his parents and siblings. James immigrated to New Zealand in 1839 and a lot of post 1840 history is found. James father was also James, b 1772, buried Helston 1827 and I believe his wife was Elizabeth Jennings buried abt 1762, also Helston.

I cannot find any ancesters before the Helston days. Any information as to where these Pethericks came from would be great.

Thanks everone

John
