Stephano Petrov

I am looking for the family of Stephano Petrov of Svestov, or Svishtov, Bulgaria. Born - November 2, 1896 and died April 2, 1985. He was my grandfather (my father's father.) He immigrated to the United States after leaving Austria when the war started -somewhere between 1914 and 1917. He left Bulgaria when he was 17 - 1913 or 1914. He stayed with one of his brothers in Austria - (first name of brother possiibly George or Mike.) He had 5 brothers and 4 sisters 3 brothers of which he did not remember names of. Sister's names were Maria,Donna,Denna, and Metta. Father or mothers's name was Stella. He fought in WWI and became a nuturalized citizen because of this. He made arrangements to work in a coal mine in Iron River, Michigan before arriving in the US. They paid his way here. He lived in Dubuque, Iowa, a state along the Mississippi. If anyone at all knows anything about this family I'd be eternally grateful for the information. Several years ago my cousin Sandy was in Sophia trying to find out more without this info we later found. While emmigrating to the US his name was changed to Peters. Thanks so much if anyone wants to help!!!!!!! My E-Mail is( spjk2@home.com ). Susan

I just happened to fall upon this site as I browsed through the internet. Clearly my family name is Petrov. We are the only family Petrov on the official Aristocracy books in St.Petersburg, Russia. My Great grandfather was a general in the royal guard of the czar and a Duke. Also he was married to an Elana Hoffmann. His son was born in Gatchina Palace right outside of St. Petersburg. Anyone with relatives who fit this description please reply. As far as we know all are deceased.

My George Petrov lived in Corning, N.Y. and had twoo daughters. His brother returned to Slovakia. Your George Pittroff is not the same person I was looking for. I allready found the descendants of my George Petrov. Thank You.
Imrich
--------------------------------------------------------------

My great-grandfather's name was George Pittroff (but was likely changed from his original name). All I know was that he moved from the "old country" with his brother. If I remember correctly what I have been told, he and his brother (whose name has been lost) did not get along and this brother moved "west." He purchased land in upstate New York on which my uncle, aunt, and cousins still reside. Is there any possibility this is the George Petrov you are looking for even though he was older than you describe?

I am sorry, there is no connection. My Petrov came to USA from Slovakia and he had only one brother.
Imrich Petrov

--Original message:--------
My grandfather came to the US in approximately 1913 from Svestov or Svishtov,Bulgaria. His name was Steve or Stephen'Peters' as his last or surname was simplified to Peters when he immigrated through Ellis Island. I wish I'd gotten the correct spelling of his original name and pronunciation, however,I don't have that information. I do know he was born November 2,1896. his father's Name was Stella and i believe his Mother's name was Sophie or Sophia. A possible connection???
Re: PETROV

One of my great-great-grandmothers was Ekaterina Petrova from Cherepovets, Russia. She married my great-great grandfather Mikhail Alexeivich Bessonov in July, 1866 and moved to his home in Kivennapa (Raivola), Finland. My mother remembers hearing that Ekaterina was 17 years old at that time. They had 5 children together. All I know for certain about Ekaterina's family is that they were wealthy, and that her adopted sister studied medicine for a while, but did not complete her studies. A Russian genealogist has discovered several Petrov families from Cherepovets, but she cannot connect Ekaterina for certain with any of these. One of these families applied for a title of nobility, on the grounds that their menfolk had served Russia as military officers since the reign of Empress Elisaveta (and at least one served in the campaign against Napoleon); however, this request was denied because the first Petrov had immigrated to Russia and had never sworn loyalty to the Russian state - it turns out that this Petrov family is descended from a Captain in the Turkish Navy, who was a graduate of the Greek Cadet School in Constantinople (Greece was occupied by the Turks in the 1700's). Does any of this sound at all familiar to you? As I said, we have not been able to connect Ekaterina with any of these various Petrov families from Cherepovets.
- Roy Kosonen

I just happened to fall upon this site as I browsed through the internet. Clearly my family name is Petrov. We are the only family Petrov on the official Aristocracy books in St.Petersburg, Russia. My Great grandfather was a general in the royal guard of the czar and a Duke. Also he was married to an Elana Hoffmann. His son was born in Gatchina Palace right outside of St. Petersburg. Anyone with relatives who fit this description please reply. As far as we know all are deceased.

Petrov

My grandfather came to the US in approximately 1913 from Svestov or Svishtov,Bulgaria. His name was Steve or Stephen'Peters' as his last or surname was simplified to Peters when he immigrated through Ellis Island. I wish I'd gotten the correct spelling of his original name and pronunciation, however,I don't have that information. I do know he was born November 2,1896. his father's Name was Stella and i believe his Mother's name was Sophie or Sophia. A possible connection???

My grandfather came to the US from Bulgaria around 1900. He was born Tudor Thomas Petrov but changed his name to Petroff upon arriving in the US. He later moved to Montana and worked for the railroad. If you have any information on those he may have left behind, please reply to this message.
