Where did this lineage come from? I can't find any hard evidence to support the George W. Petty - James R. Petty link. According to George Watson Petty's tombstone, he was born 25 Oct 1837 & died 17 May 1930. His death certificate says he was born in Guilford County NC and that his father was William Petty. (As best I can determine, all of James R. Petty's children were born in Chatham or Moore Counties.) In the 1850 & 1860 censuses, there is a William Petty with wife Diana in Guilford county. Among their nine children are George, born abt 1837, and Lidia, born abt 1834. In the 1880 census, I find George W. Petty with wife Asenith (Barnes) in Guilford County. Living with them are son Judson E. Petty and George's sister Lydia Petty, age 47. (James R. Petty did not have a daughter named Lydia.) I take this as strong evidence that George Watson Petty's parents were William Petty and Diana (Hodgin) Petty, not James R. Petty and Mary (Bingham) Petty. Does anyone have any hard evidence pro or con to this conclusion?
I have, with fair confidence, traced William's lineage as follows: William Petty, Francis M. Petty (Sarah Ragland), Rev William Petty (Letitia Thornton), Thomas Petty (Elizabeth Moore), Thomas Petty (Catherine Garton).
