Re: phagan / fagan

In my research on the Phagan family I have found that the spelling of the name "Phagan" was changed to "Fagan" by James Phagan/Fagan, born abt 1797. He was the son of Moses Phagan (1765-1830) and grandson of Phillip Phagan, Sr. Moses also had another son, Phillip Phagan, who did not change the spelling. As far as I have found in my research, James Phagan/Fagan's line were the only ones who descended from Phillip Phagan, Sr that changed the spelling to "Fagan." I have also noticed it spelled "Fagans." I noticed in the 1830 census that James' last name was spelled with a PH but from the 1940 census and on it was spelled with an F. My guess about the reason for the change is that the census workers usually spelled phonetically so it was just spelled with an F, like it sounds, and James decided to continue using that spelling because it was probably easier. I've also heard the reason was the mail, but who really knows for sure?

On another note, there were also some that changed the spelling to "Phagans" with an "s" at the end. Andrew Jackson Phagan/Phagans and his children all spelled their name Phagans.

hello i'm william terry fagan. i fall under phillip phagan decendants if you want to look that tree up. in that tree its still phagan. sometime around 1850 the spelling of the name was changed due to the new mail service because that they all lived so close to each other. some of the phagan (fagan)once owned the land where Clemson University is today. it was sold to the calhouns. also some of the land where the Biltmore house is located known at that time as Pisgah Forrest was won in a land lottery by a fagan or phagan. that tree still has me listed as william terry phagan. i have tried to get it changed but haven't had any luck. the names were changed to fagans,fagan.feagan,fagen.phagen and probably a few more. i hope this helps you out.

Re: Mary Phagan's Family

One of Mary Phagan's nieces kept a list of the people that were involved in the lynching of Leo Frank. Several of my family members were on that list. Dobbs and McKinneys--she wrote a note about the Dobbs being related to Mary Kinney (Mc). I had a copy of that list that I got off of a website--I can't find mention of that list at all anymore and have lost my copy. Would anyone know where I can find a copy? The note was the only hint I had about the McKinneys and those particular Dobbs families being related.

Thank you for any help!

Hi Frank
Are you still doing your Phagan Phlyer? I just obtained a geneaology book from John Oliver Caldwell Hernando Mississippi which has a lot of information on our line of Phagans desendants of Philip Phagan, Philip Phagan Jr, and John Phagan. I think John had a brother named Philip Thomas which is the line of Phagans that moved west. My head is spinning trying to make sense of all this. My father was Bernis Phagan, son of Goodman Phagan and grandson of George Higgins Phagan. I am really interested in Phillip Phagan who died in 1798 and was my great, great, great grandfather. I have very little information on him. You can contact me at lena@strato.net. Myphone number is 863-471-3552. I would appreciate any information or tips you can give me. Thanks Lena Phagan Conner

Thanks for responding. I do have Ella in my database. Her parents I show as John William Phagan and Martha Morrison. John William Phagan was a brother to my gg grandmother, Sarah Ann Phagan who married David Keebler, then John P. Wallace, and then my gg grandfather, Gideon T. Miller. I also have parents of John William and my Sarah Ann as John Phagan and Eleanor Young. Would be happy to share my data with you via separate email. Do you have additional information on the Phagan family?

Dear Fred .... don't know how we might be related but I think we might be ... have discovered that when the name is spelled Phagan ... almost all the time there's a connection.

My name is Frank Phagan and live in the Nashville area. With the help of other relatives, have been able to track down two different branches of the Phagan Tree. One branch goes from Colorado to Arkansas to eastern Tennessee in the early 1800s. The other branch comes Arizona to Texas to Tennessee to South Carolina in the 1790s. This second branch covers more offspring. Its possible there could be other branches.

There are also branches of the Phagan family that changed their name to Fagan. There is a connected branch that comes from South Carolina that spread into Georgia. Quite a few of these guys are spelled Fagan. That's ok, we won't hold that against them.

Can you tell me any information about your Dad and your Grandpa. You said your Dad grew up in Talbott, TN. Do you know the names of his brothers & sisters by chance?

I'll fess up, am very sporadic in my research efforts its real easy to over-dose on it.

Hope to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Frank L.
The pencil factory was later the Scripto Pencil Factory.
My Grandmother used to sing the song about Mary. She said that her Grandmother was Little Mary's Aunt Katy (Catherine Fagan mar. Lewis Edwards).
Katy & Lewis Edwards are buried in Forsyth Co. Ga., next to their graves was a "Mary Fagan" Katy's Mother. People over the years broke this Mary's stone & carried the pieces away.
I do not know if the factory building still exists. If I find out I will let you know.

PHAGAN/MILLER - BENTON CO., AR

I am searching for information on my gg grandparents, Gideon T. Miller (1829/TN) and Sarah Ann Phagan (1826/NC). From 1840 to 1861 Gideon T. Miller was living in Benton Co., AR. I find Sarah Ann Phagan living in the same county as early as 1850. She was married twice before Gideon T. Miller - to a David Keebler in TN about 1844 and then to a John P. Wallace in Benton Co, AR. The family is living in Craighead Co., AR at the 1870 census with children John Pierce and Robert B. (b. 1868/TN) and Thomas Bell (b. 1869/TN). Also living with them are Nancy J. Reeves (1853/AR) and James Reeves (1863/AR). I have no info on their location in TN when the three children were born. They lived in Craighead Co. until 1897, having other children: Jesse T., Charlotte and Jacob. In 1900 the only members of the family living are Thomas Bell and John Pierce Miller. Any information of this family would be appreciated.

I would suggest that if anyone wants to know more about this issue they should have a look at "The Leo Frank Reconsidered: Gender and Politics in the Making of Reactionary Populism".

This reading highlights the way Mary was reconfigured as a symbol of the "Old South" in its conflict with the "New South".

The case is an exemplar of anti-semitism and sexism (among other things).
