Hello! Yes I think I can help you.
I have information on an Edwin Ernest Pheasant who had the following children that I know of, 3 girls, Jack, Leonard Edwin, and Percy Spencer Pheasant.Edwin/Edward migrated to South Africa following the footsteps of his cousin, who emigrated in 1898, my great grandad George Wm Peter Kitely Pheasant whose father George was from Bedfordshire. Your branch (if it is) was from the marriage of his brother Albert Pheasant who married Susannah Holliday in Kent around 1875. Anyway will send you more detail if you think this is correct, love to hear back soon.
Regards Rosie Alley

There may be some connection between our families although right now I'm not sure what that is! My dad William (Bill) Francis Pheasant, one of four sons of Douglas Ellen Pheasant of Mackay, Qld (who are now deceased), I think met with Barry Pheasant in Queensland at some point. Dad's brothers are Robert (Mackay) , Graham (Tumut) and John (NZ). I have a younger brother, also Bill Pheasant, and a sister Sara. There aren't all that many Pheasants in Australia so it is interesting to work out more connections. Anyway post your family tree when you've worked it out! All the best , Rosie Alley

My connection with Bedfordshire is Thomas Pheasant, born 1797 at Billericay, Bedfordshire, who was a straw plait merchant. He married Sara Poole from Linslade nr Leighton Buzzard, Bed., date unknown. We are descended from one of their two sons, George Pheasant, born 1854 in Billington, Bed.(They had another son, Albert who had seven sons, Albert, Walter, George, Edwin or Ernest, Sydney, Percy, and Arthur.)
George married Sara Elizabeth Groom in 1878 in London and had at least four children, of which we are descended from George William Peter Kitely Pheasant, who was my great grandfather. He migrated from England to South Africa, married there, thence to New Zealand and finally to Australia where he settled. Still uncertain whether there would be any connection with your family, however from the little research I have done there seemed to be hundreds of Pheasants in Bedfordshire at this time!

The other is his son named Joseph Alexander Pheasant (my uncle) who was born in Ontario, Canada and died 1998 in Florida. Can give you more infor if you think they are connected to your Pheasant family. This name is very hard to research. Connie

Samuel James Pheasant

Hello. I am descended from Samuel James Pheasant who arrived in America around 1750 from Sheffield, or so I understand. Thus far, I have not been able to locate any ancestors of his online or trace back my lineage further than Samuel. In September I will be visiting Sheffield and staying for a few months, and I might get an opportunity to do some research while there. If anyone could provide some tips regarding where to search for records, what to look for, any leads, etc. I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Bruce, our branch of the Pheasant family came originally from Bedfordshire, England with my great-grandfather, George William Peter Kiteley Pheasant b 1884.
His father and grandfather were born in Billington.
But GWPK Pheasant migrated to South Africa, married, then moved to New Zealand along with his parents and other relatives who followed.
He then continued on to Australia where we are now.
But there is another whole branch still in South Africa descended form GWPK's cousins .
Then there are some in NZ who went back over there.
We live in Melbourne. Where are you?
Rosie Alley nee Pheasant

Hello Paul, yes there are an awful lot of those Pheasants......I am trying to get a grip on the ones emanating from Bedford, but there are definitely other family groupings in other counties such as Derby etc. I don't know anything about those groups myself.
There is a lady in NZ who is, or was, doing a one name study of Pheasants. I could ask my aunt for a contact address if you want.
Have you tried www.familysearch.com to search for particular births, marriages or groups of siblings from known parents?

If you can find any other descendants it is helpful as they often have another piece of the puzzle or other clues to help you narrow down the search a bit.
The 1881 census is helpful too .
One of my favourite sites has been FreeBMD where you can look up all sorts of info. The list of Pheasants gets longer each time they update it, but it isn't as bad as say, the Smiths must be. Anyway have fun !

Pheasants buried at Cass Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA

I'm sure most of you Pheasant researchers already know this, but thought I'd post it anyway...

I just happened to be driving through Cass Twp, Huntingdon Co., PA today and spied some headstones I'd never noticed before. Being a cemetery stomper for my own family research, I drove until I found them and saw there were Pheasants and Smiths there. I had no paper, no pen, and no camera....and a poor memory. The only one I recall is Anna, wife of Samuel Pheasant. There are many Smiths buried there also. Perhaps this is the Smith Family Cemetery. I don't know. It's located on Beavertown Road.

I plan on going back with camera in hand in the next few days to photgraph them all - probably 20-25 in all as I only live a stone's throw from it. I'd be happy to email a copies of the photos.

Please email me directly if you have Smiths or Pheasants or Saylors you think might be there as I do not visit this board routinely.

Happy Hunting,
Donna Fox dfox@pennswoods.net
Hi again,
wondering how you went with that family tree.
Eventually we found that the Thomas & Sara Pheasant thing was not correct, at least not for that generation.
My great-grandfather, George Wm Peter Kitely Pheasant's father was George Pheasant, who was the son of John Pheasant and Zilpher Janes, one of at least 10 children, but only three sons survived into adulthood that we know of, George, Albert and James, but James died early in his marriage so don't know if there were any children.
There were lots of daughters, Diana, Emma, Martha, Sarah are the ones I can remember offhand.
Barry Pheasant is descended from Albert's South African line. Did you find out any more about your line?
I can send you the trees i've worked out so far.
Hello Cindy,

Glad to find someone with Pheasants in Yorkshire!
My London based Pheasant family is John Pheasant and Ann Morris. I have found 7 of their children. John was born in Carlton Juxta Snaith in about 1793 and married Ann Morris (from Hull). He is, I think, 1 of 10 children. Not sure if there are any more.

His parents were Thomas Pheasant and Jane Backhouse (Bacchus, Bakehouse, Batchouse).
Thomas's family was spread out - living at Snaith, Birkin, Howden, Barmby on the Marsh and London. I still don't Know where or what has happened to 6 of his children.

Have any records of tombstone inscriptions, or graves in cemeteries or churchyards been made yet? It would make life a bit easier in locating family members.

I can also be contacted at ptmann@btinternet.com

Phil

Re: Yorkshire Pheasants

Hi Trixie,
Thanks for your E-mails concerning Thomas Pheasant and Jane Backhouse. It has certainly thrown a qestion mark over the information we have got!

The marriage of John Pheasant to Ann Morris in 1823 at Holy Trinity Church, Hull, Yorkshire is correct. The parish records show that this was Ann's parish, while John was shown as living in the parish of St Saviour's, Southwark, Surrey (on the opposite side of the River Thames to Westminster)

John died in London in 1846. The 1851 census shows Ann as being born in Hull, Yorkshire. So we assumed that they had both come from Yorkshire. But we could be wrong in assuming that John's parents were Thomas and Jane Backhouse.

During our research up in Yorkshire, we discovered your John and Grace at Cavil, and their children showing up at Howden. If you are correct then we have some more information concerning Thomas and Jane which you may like to have.

Could you send me the information you have so I can check it with the information we have. You can send directly to my E-mail address if you would like too. Perhaps we can then get to the bottom of this!
Regards,
Phil

Rachel Pheasant Bartlett

I'm seeking information about the ancestors of Rachel (various spellings) Pheasant and John Bartlett (born 1764) who were married April 6, 1795 in St. Marylebone Church, London. Rachel's last address was listed in her will as Powis Place off Great Ormond St., (now the site of a hospital).

According to family tradition, John's father was William Bartlett, and John had brothers Richard, William and Arthur and a sister, Betsy, whom John accidentally shot and killed.

John and Rachel had a daughter, Ann (possibly Mary Ann), then sailed to America where their daughter was christened in 1796 in a Baltimore church. Rachel died in 1797 and John took their young daughter back to England where, according to family oral history, she was reared by his parents.
John settled in Hagerstown, Maryland, married Eleanor Felker and had four children, including my ancestor, William Bartlett. All moved to Washington County, Ohio, around 1820.

A bit of mystery surrounds the first daughter, Ann, who came to America in the mid 1800s, calling herself Mary Ann Rickard who married John Roberts. Their son, Martin Rickard Roberts, was born in Tavistock, England, around 1820. Other children were born in New York. I'm interested in learning how Ann Bartlett became Mary Ann Rickard. Was she reared by the Rickard family who were relatives of the Bartletts or Pheasants?

Glad to share detailed information about the Bartletts in America and many family photos.

Shelby Miller Ruch
