Where do you find the Phelps family just before they came to Ky?

We have talked about the Webb and Phelps connection before...I was wondering where you find the Phelps family immediately prior to the move into Ky? I have Martin in the Wilkes and Buncombe NC areas in the mid 1790's. The land that Martin had surveyed in 1796 was from Nicholas Phelps if I remember correctly. Thanks for any help.. Winnie
