Sandy
the Phelps DNA project has William King Phelps listed:
1. Thomas Felps b. abt 1678. Located in Baltimore County, MD in 1699 with 1 slave -- att Spes Utis Creek, d. 1758/9 Deer Creek Lower Hundreds, Baltimore Co, MD, declares to the St. George's Vestry House (near present Perryman, Harford Co, MD) in 1738, married Mrs. Rosanna Swift. 5/28/1710.

2. Avington Felps b. abt 1711 Baltimore Co, MD. moved to Orange Co VA abt 1738, moved to Johnston Co NC abt 1749, moved to Anson/Rowan Co NC abt 1753, moved to St. Paul's Parish GA 1771, d. ca 1780s GA, m. Susanna Waggoner

5 Aquilla Phelps b. 1822 NC d. Dec. 13, 1913 Johnson Co KY m. abt. 1862 Sarah Hickey

6 Thomas J. Phelps b abt 1863 VA

7 Adolphus Phelps b abt 1880 KY m. Lora Webb
7 Leander Phelps b abt 1885 VA
7 John Phelps b 1882
7 William King Phelps b. Jan. 25, 1865 Washington Co VA d. 1924, Elk City, OK m. Zora Webb

However, DNA tested has brought into question the connection from Brittain m. Waggoner to Aquilla(5). Can you help provide any additional information that helps us with this connection? I noticed in the string that one one of the respondants listed Brittain (Philetian?) Phelps. Also, can you provide any additional information about Adolphus Phelps m. Lora Webb? Adolphus is a very interesting name that only shows up in one other line..
hope to hear from you soon! feel free to contact me at thphelps@sbcglobal.net
Tom

Phelps in the Lake Champlain area of Upstate NY

I have reached a "brickwall" with my GGGG Grandfather, Rubin (Reuben) Phelps. Reuben Phelps b. abt 1779 d. 9/16/09 in Plattsburgh, Clinton, NY; married Esther Truesdell b.1779. Esther was born in Thetford Vermont.
The Clinton County (Plattsburgh) NY census for 1800 has
Rubin Phelps: 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26 yrs and 1 female 16-26 yrs next door to
David Phelps: 1 male over 45, 1 female 10-16 yrs, 1 female 16-26 yrs and 1 female over 45.
It is likely that David is father to Rueben.
The 1810 census lists Widow phelps (Esther Truesdell Phelps since Rueben died in 1809) and David Phelps in Plattsburgh along with Samuel N Phelps and Robert Phelps.
Other information I have found indicates that Reuben may have grown up in New Hampshire?
Rueben Phelps' son Samuel Truesdell Phelps b 1804, married Dorcas Frisbie, is found in Willsboro, Ausable and Clintonville NY in subsequent census records. Samuel T Phelps' son Ambrose (or possibly samuel ambrose)married Johanna B Hanmer and ended up in Breitung, Menominee, Michigan after 1870.

I am hoping that a Phelps researcher or relative from the Lake Champlain area might recognize some of this and have some family history to add....I have not been able to identify where David or Rueben Phelps came from although according to history, it is likely that they originated in Connecticut.
Family stories indicate the Phelps ancestors came from Wales

Phelps, Jr. married Jane (-?-) and had a son named Nelson Phelps b. abt 1805 in Buckingham Co., VA. I also wonder if Jane's maiden name was Nelson?
Nelson Phelp's grandson and great-grandson both had the middle name of 'Nelson'.

Sarah, Hi; I would have no problem in sending you what I have but if I am not mistaken; DNA studies have found no connection between the Northern and the Southern Phelps lines. My Phelps are from Virginia into Kentucky. I would suggest you go to the FTDNA.com web-site and review the PHELPS surname Group study results. You might contact the Phelps surname sites' web master and see what leads he can give you on your northern Phelps line. You may find that very useful. Several Phelps myths have been resolved either proven or disproven by these test. Of course new questions also arrise as well. Hope this helps. Byron
I'm interested in any books or information of NE Phelp's line containing Phelps. I'm of a CT Phelps line, Hezekiah G Phelps born in CT 1792 who had my great great grandfather Hezekiah I Phelps b: in Ohio where Hezekiah G Phelps died. hezekiah I phelps is my great grandfather who died in Cumberland Cty Ohio and father to John Wilbur Phelps who had my Grandfather Opha Guy Phelps. Anyway I hit a deadend at Hezekiah G Phelps.
I believe hezekiah G phelps had a brother James Monroe Phelps since his son James R Phelps was living next to Hezekiah I phelps in cumberland cty, Il in 1860. James Monroe shows up in Cumberland Cty from Ohio after living next to Hezekiah G phelps and the census say he was born in New York and both his parents were from CT. I'm pretty sure they were brothers, Hezekiah G and James Monroe Phelps.

Thomas, I see from others research that your Phelps line is carried back several generations from Ezebiel, thru Thomas W., Aventon, Thomas Felps to a Thomas Phelps 1664-1758 and then to a Thomas Felps m Jane Reynolds. I also found a couple of items on Lucy Lucas in one of the Phelps books I have, which you may already have? What specifically are you looking for? Lucy's mother was a Phelps off of my Phelps line according to records I found. Drop me an e-mail and we can discuss further. byronrenner@ (use the extension from my previous note.

This is my Peter N. Phelps through his dau.l Helen Brady Phelpl. His dates: 2 Sep 1834 - 12 Jan 1913. Saunders and Mary Coleman are his parents as per his death cert.

He married Jane Powell Megginson and there is quite a bit of info available on this family.

I'd like to find Peter's middle name. I've seen it given as North since there are Norths involved in land transactions, but there are also Nelsons!

There is a Phelps/Coleman cemetery in Buckingham Co. I don't have any further into on his grandparents. Does anyone know about this group? Melanie

Thomas, hi by any chance do you know if you are related to my Thomas Phelps Jr 1727 VA - 1797 Bullit Co., KY? I will check some of my Brashear and Phelps books, to see if I can locate Thomas Brashears and/or Ezekiel Phelps. Unfortunately; I just returned to Virginia from a trip to Missouri and visited their new Genealogical Research Library in Independence, MO. I only have volume one of the latest 1998 books "A Breashear(s) Family History" by Charles Brashear and Shirley Brashear McCoy. This volume, I have not found your Thomas Brashears with a quick look but will look more. I am also directly related to Abraham Lucas and Mary Evans, who's daughter Elizabeth Lucas married my Jesse Bacon in Hardin Co., Ky in 1823. I may have a picture of her? My email is my full name byron renner strung together in one word at cox.net if you prefer?

Phelps surname origin in Flanders?

I have been doing much research into the ethnic history of surnames. I found Phelps to be a very interesting name. Have you considered that Phelps may be of Flemish origin in Flanders, now mostly a part of Belgium? Here is my thinking: In 1850 census of US and 1851 census of UK, Phelps is almost seven times more common in US and 6 times more common per capita in US than England. Based on other research this indicates Phelps is likely or foreign origin (foreign, ie not English). From the 1550's through the early 1600's Flanders was torn by terrible religious persecution of Protestants by the Spanish Catholic rulers of Flanders. Thousands of Flemish refugees fled mostly to England. Many then went to America in the 1630's when the English under Archbishop Laud attempted to force the descendents of Flemish, Walloon, and French Huguenot religious refugees to adhere to the Church of England. I am beginning to uncover many particularly Flemish based surnames showing up in early New England, Maryland, and Virginia. Many of the Flemish went to areas in East England around Norwich, the same area from which Winthrop recruited many settlers among the Purtian settlers of Mass Bay Colony. Further most Phelps in 1800's England lived around London and the port city of Bristol, other areas common to Flemish refugees. Phelps seems likely to be a variation of Philips (Philips with one L is also much more common in US than in England where 2-L's is the more common spelling). Philips (with one L) is fairly common in Flanders today with approx 3,600 with the surname in an area with about 5 million people. This is a ratio of Philips (1-L) in Flanders about the same in US and in Flanders, but 3 times the ratio of Philips than in England. Further looking at the first names of some in the early Mass Phelps family in New England: George, Isaac, Abraham, Jacob Joseph, and Nathaniel and Henry Edward, and Nicholas. All these first names except Edward are more common in Belgium than in England. Nathanial, Jacob, Isaac and Nicholas are very common in Belgium and rare in England from 1500-1700. Only 1 in 80 boys are named Nicholas in this period in England, Only 1 in 300 boys are named Jacob or Nathanial in England in this period, and less than one in 1,000 are named Jacob in England in this period. My suggestion is that the likely conclusion is that Phelps is a pronounciation version of Philips from Flanders and the Phelps families in America and England are likely descendents of Flemish refugess to England. It would be interesting anyone ever tries to solicit DNA from males named Philips in Flanders and compare to the Phelps DNA database.

Rich Fulton
Flower Mound TX.
richardfulton@hotmail.com

African-American Phelps

I have traced my gggrandfather to be Edward Russell Phelps born in New Bedford, Massachusetts 1821 and married Adelina Thirer (sp?) born in Viginia. They emigrated to Victoria, B.C. in 1849 among the first African-American Pioneers in B.C.
Does anyone have any information on their previous ancestors in Massachusetts or Virginia?

Thanks!
Jen

Byron
I have been researching a list of pioneers to Monroe County MO from the 1820's which included a Thomas Brashears. Monroe county was organized out of Ralls County in 1830. Upon further investigation, I beleive that the following information applies to Thomas Brashears of Monroe Co. MO: "b. 1790, Nelson Co, KY; m. 9 Jun 1812, Hardin Co, KY (Bk A, p.11 & 42), Lucy Lucas, (ancestors of Marie Ownbey). Thomas and Lucy moved to Audrain Co, MO." Does this look familiar to you? the reason I ask is that my ancestor, Ezekiel Phelps b.1801 TN was among the list of pioneers as well. Most of the men listed were from KY and TN. I am looking for common threads and relationships of Ezekiel
Thanks
Thomas H. Phelps

Dear John
My ancestor, Ezekiel Phelps brother Jacob, married Catherine Davidson. In the In 1850 census Cherokee Co, TX:

Jacob Phelps b. TN age 43 m. Catherine (Davidson) b. TN age 47
Children:
Britton b. TN 21
William David b. TN 19
Riley W. b. TN 16
Thomas C. b. TN 14
Mary Ann b. TN 12
Benjamin F. b. TN 10
Martha J. b. TX 3

given Martha is born in TX but Benjamin is in TN would indicate that they migrated to TX around the time your ancestor married 1840-47. Assuming Catherine and David are related, did they migrate out of KY?

Ther is a definate connection between Britain Felps line in TN and Avington and Smith Phelps in 1820 Jefferson Co. KY. Do you have any additional info on Angeline or her line?
Thanks
Tom
Re: Phelps surname origin in Flanders?

Hi Rich
very interesting information. However, I think that the Phelps surname origin is a bit more complicated. There are at least three major lines of Phelps in the Phelps DNA project. Many of the Southern Phelps original surname spelling was Felpes / Felps and eventually Phelps. Even more intriguing is the DNA haplo group is E1a* and is of African origin. There are other surname variants that appear in the records; There is a known Fulp who became a Phelps, there are Felts and Flypses as well. Vredryk Flypses aka Frederick Phillips was of Bohemian origin, later to the Netherlands and came to NY c.1680's. The first known Phelps was on the second supply ship to the new world in 1608. My line traces back to MD c.1650-80.

The Phelips of Motecute, Yeovil are possible connections. The NE Phelps have origins in Crewkerne, England. Thomas Phelps of the Grayhound originated out of Bristol in 1666. England. Keep pressing into this idea however, because the American Phelps European origin has not been proven yet
THPhelps

I noticed that you were referring to the Phelps book Sevin and Phelps - please be aware that this book, while is a valuable tool, has many errors. Please check out a couple websites www.phelpsfamilyhistory.com and http://pages.suddenlink.net/phelpsdna/DNA_Project/index.htm
Also, if you're a Phelps, please feel free to join the groupon Facebook called "Phelps Family Genealogy in America". It's our hope that through FB, it may help bring more Phelpses to one location and encourage them to rediscover their Phelps roots.
