My grandmother was Opal Graves. So many times she told my sister and me how much she missed her brothers and sisters. It was so sad to break up the family. I have so much respect for their dad Harvey. If you have any additional information, I would love to hear it.

Phifer married the Alexander Harrirson Phifer boy that the rest of the children were put into foster homes as their mother had died also.

We then had a a line of Gilley/Rasts that married the girls of the Whims or Wims. His father was John Phifer (Fifer), his mother Elizabeth. I am unable to tie them into the North Carolina and Virginia Phifers. New Jersey is the only state in which they show up in the census.
Hi, I'm Joseph Phifer Cox's daughter. He is a direct descendant of Joseph Phifer (married to Judith Meredith)circa 1750's. You mentioned him in a post from 2002. That he was from Henry Co. Va.
Do you know anything about Joseph Phifer's parents? Where they came from, etc.? I have the Mayflower Ancestors chart but I'm more interested in where the Phifer's were from originally.
Thanks, Cheryl Cox Lafon

I have all of the Forest Phifer line back to 1730. Forest Phifer and his father Bradley are buried in the Phifer cemetery near Groesbeck, Tx. Forest's grave is marked and it is believed that an unmarked grave at the head of Forest is his father Bradley. Bradley's parents were Joseph Phifer
and Judith Meredith of Henry Co. Virginia. Joseph's father was John Phifer...brother to Martin Phifer. My Phifer family tree is public on Ancestry.com.

Anita

Thomas Samuel Phifer 1934-2012 Montgomery, Alabama to Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – On June 19, 1934, Thomas Samuel Phifer was born to Dillard Phifer Sr. and Ethel Mae Jemison Phifer in Montgomery, Alabama. As oldest of six children, his life exemplified loving care.

When he became old enough, he helped his father earn money by selling wood, fruit and vegetables. He also worked in the corner store and shoe shop his father owned.
After graduating from George Washington Carver High School in Montgomery, Thomas relocated to Youngstown, Ohio in 1953.
He found work at Republic Steel in Youngstown, however, he left his job to serve in the U.S. Air Force.

While in the Air Force, Thomas was able to travel to many foreign countries, including Germany, England, France, Rome and Denmark. He was honorably discharged on March 21, 1962. Upon returning from serving his country,

Thomas joined the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Youngstown. He continued to live a life of loving care by serving in the Willing Workers Ministry and as a Trustee. He also enjoyed participating in the Men’s Sunday school class. If food needed to be prepared for serving the homeless or if the church grounds needed a good cleaning, he was there to work in whatever capacity he was needed. The Tabernacle Baptist Church named Thomas Phifer the 2010 Man of the Year.

In the winter, Thomas could be found riding his snow blower around the neighborhood, cleaning snow from neighbors’ driveways. Any senior citizens he knew who had odd jobs that needed to be completed could depend on him to do it.

Thomas’ strong work ethic was also evident in his work career. After returning from the Air Force, he resumed working in the steel mill. He received training to become a craneman and proceeded to work 44 years in the steel mill, retiring in 1997. During his career, he received various accolades from his supervisors.

Although he was a hard worker, Thomas knew how to balance his life. Family vacations to visit relatives and even a cherished trip to Disney World highlighted his summers. Thomas kept fishing rods in his pickup truck, just in case he wanted to stop and fish. He was also a hunter who brought home deer, rabbits and other wild game for his family to feast on. An avid gardener, Thomas regularly grew scrumptious vegetables. One year, he tended rows of corn that grew as tall as the roof of his home. With all of these accomplishments, the one that brought Thomas the most joy was his family.

As a young boy, Thomas showed his knack for knowing what he wanted when he found his junior high school sweetheart, Corine Alexander Phifer. Their over 50 year marriage blessed them with three children, Lonnie K. Phifer (Debra) of Lithonia, Georgia, LeTanya R. Brown (Gary) of Youngstown, and Rebecca A. Mathis (Anthony) of Stone Mountain, Ga.

He was a loving grandfather to Jalana N. Phifer of Warren, Ohio, Jonai R. Cooks (Andrew) and Janelle A. Brown of Youngstown, Jacob T. Phifer and Jordyn A. Phifer of Lithonia, Ga., and Anthony Mathis Jr. and Alexa Mathis, both of Stone Mountain, Ga.
He was blessed to see his great-grandchildren, Andrew C. Cooks III and Elijah V. Cooks of Youngstown.
His siblings, Corine P. Darby, Ethelene P. McGruder, and Dr. Donald S. Phifer (Rita) of El Paso, Texas; his brother-in-law, Enoch Alexander Jr. (Jacquelyn) of Montgomery; and Aunts Bessie Jemison of Chicago, and Estelle S. Evans of Montgomery will also miss him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dillard Phifer Jr.; and his sister, Mary P. Turner.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 707 Arlington St., Youngstown, OH 44505. Viewing will be from 9 to 10 a.m. The homegoing service will be held at 10 a.m.

Arrangements entrusted to the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.

http://www.vindy.com/news/tributes/2012/mar/15/thomas-samuel...

Mahoning

I am also a Phifer. My grandfather was Clayton Charles Phifer from Camden NJ. I do not know who his father was, as he was raised in the family of his grandfather, my gggf: Charles A Phifer b. 1858. Others in that household recorded in 1900 Census: w. Sarah, sons: Charles Clayton, John B, Wallace, Clarence, daughters Jessie, Emma and Edna. There is an Elmer listed in 1900 census that is not in 1910 census.

Tammie Lou, Camden seems to play a part in the early Phifers. My ggf, Joseph Fifer (Phifer) married Rachel Lovett in 1860 in Camden. It's mysterious.

I'll get my research notes out and see what I can find that may lead in your direction. I'll get back to you by Tuesday of this week. OK?

Marilyn Phifer

I looked at my information again and found that Joseph H. Phifer lived in Camden, NJ.
Gr-gr-grandfather Joseph H. Phifer born around 1850 died 1934
Married: Anna G. Noross
Gr-grandfather John N. Phifer born around 1880
Married:Elizabeth
Grandfather Earl J. Phifer Born 1907 died 1995
Married:1st wife Mary 2nd wife Virginia
This is what I have so far, I am still lost because I can't find anything from there, I still am not sure if we match up in anyway. Thank you so much, Tammie Lou
Hi, Tammie Lou,

I'm afraid I'm not too helpful. My father, Joseph Frederick Phifer, was the only son of Joseph Phifer, my gf., both born in Medford, N.J. His father, my ggf., also Joseph Phifer (Fifer)was born in Evesham, N.J. in 1832 or 1835. I believe he had an older brother, Thomas, because they show up in the 1850 Census together working in Medford, N.J. on a farm. They also entered the Civil War together and came out together. I don't know if there were any other siblings.

My ggf., Joseph Phifer (Fifer) married Rachel Lovett in Camden in 1860. I have a copy of their marriage certificate which does NOT list the names of their respective parents. However, I also have a copy of my ggf.'s death certificate wherein it lists his parents as John and Elizabeth, both born in U.S.

Also, on the N.J. Census, in the column regarding birth places of his parents, both are listed as N.J.

Earl is not a name I have come across in my recent family, but certainly the names John and Joseph H. Phifer I have seen before.

If Earl was born in 1850, it's not likely he'd be a brother to my ggf. who was born in 1832 or 1835.

Also, I don't think my Phifers are related to the original
two who came from Switzerland and landed in North Carolina, but I don't know that for a fact. My family was unable to read and/or write, and they were very poor. For the most part they all lived and died in Medford, N.J.

I hope this helps you, Tammy Lou.

Marilyn Phifer

Phifer (gr.gr.grandfather) I have birthdays of Joseph in 1850, but can not find anything beyond that, his father and mother, or anything else. If we have a connection please contact me.
There were several African-American households listed in Benton County, Tennessee, after the 1860's. John Phifer was a merchant on the Tennessee River, had a large farm, and some slaves. Sallie Phifer is listed in his household for several years, as well as an African-American household next door with a largish family living there. I believe I remember seeing a marriage record there with her name on it also. HTH, Trish Bullen

James F. Phifer 1858 to 1952

I would like to connect with descendants of James F. Phifer (if there are any???)His name is often found spelled as "Pifer" (death certificate)

He was born 7 Jan. 1858 in Williamsburg, Ontario Canada but emigrated circa 1896 to Waddington, St. Lawrence Co. New York.
He was still there in 1910 but by 1920 he was in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Calif.
He died 30 May 1952 at the age of 94 in Paso Robles..another long living Phifer!

He was married to Emma C. Rombough b. 1866 in Dundas County, Ontario. Date of marriage 7 March 1894 in Morrisburg, Ontario.

Children:

Stanley Phifer 1891 to 1896
Winifred Sarah Phifer b. 15 May 1897 St. Lawrence Co. NY
died 27 Dec. 1955 San Luis Obispo Calif.
There may have been a son, John, of whom I can find no trace.

If anyone has information on this family, please contact me. It would solve a great family mystery!
Thanks
Sue

Hi Judy:

If you are still at this address...I don't think I ever thanked you for the lead you gave me on James Phifer/Pifer; I have found out a whole lot more and about Winnifred and the school in Paso Robles...The principal was kind enough to send me a bio...Since then, amongst my parents photos..in a trunk in the basement, I have found many pics of James and his daughter Winnifred visiting my grandmother in Williamsburg Ontario..

I have only found reference to Winnifred and no other children; Emma Rombough, James' wife died in 1901 and James did not remarry that I can find; He had two sisters in Paso Robles or near by but I can find no children for these families either.
So the "Stanley" remains a mystery
Thank you again!!!

I have several Fannie and Mary Phifer's, but no additional information that ties them together.

I have a Freeman PHIFER, who died on 23 May 1929 and resided in Little Rock, Arkansas.

If this sounds like the right information contact me by e-mail at blp3rd@fuse.net or call me at 513-779-2922.

Bennie Lee Phifer III
West Chester, OH
(Cincinnati, OH)

I have just started my research into my history so do not have very much information. My grandmother was Media Phifer-1903b-1975d, her father was Alex Phifer-abt 1865 and his wife was Ella Ward-1873b all in Arkansas. If any of these names ring a bel, please let me know.

Thanks
Annie
