Ada Madeleine French (nee Wilkins)

Could anyone help me with a mystery please. The lady mentioneded in the subject is my great grandmother. She was born in Portsea, Portsmouth around 1861 and married in 1879 at the age of 18 (that's what's on the marriage certificate). She had eight children up until 1893.

It is said that she left her husband and went to America with her two youngest children. However, the whole family appear in the census of 1891 and only she and her oldest daughter are missing from the 1901 census.

My grandfather was born in 1891 and he had a brother born in 1893 and as they are both on the 1901 census, these cannot be the "two youngest" referred to.

It is also said that she went to Philadelphia to run an hotel and that another man was involved, so she may have a different surname.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
Robert Smith in Philadelphia about 1855 t0 1869, coffee roaster

I am trying to seperate or join two Robert Smiths in this period in Philadelphia. The one immigrated about 1834 from ireland or the UK and the other immigrated about 1869 from ireland or the UK. They were both eventually profitably involved in the coffee roasting business as were their descendants. Considering family member names, they may have been related but this relationship has not been determined and is why I'm looking for help.

Everett Smith evsmith@instawave.net

Frank Link

My father was Frank Link and his father was Frank Link he was married to Barbara Kuhnle. Frank's father was Edward Link. I know their birth dates, but know very little about them. I do know that my grandfather and all of his siblings were for awhile in St. Vincent's Orphanage in Philadelphia. Apparently they where there after there mother died. Edward remarried and got the children back. I did find a cencus in 1910 for them and maybe the parents of Edward were born in Germany. In that cencus their was an Anna.I think that maybe their stepmother.
That is all that I have on them and would appreciate any info anyone has on them.
Thanks,
Sandi Link Rhoads

William Francis Martin; Mary Cronin; 1850s -1860s; Ulster, N IRE
Do you know the town where this William Martin was born and who his parents were?
Did he have any siblings?

William Francis Martin was born August 1852 in Ulster, possibly in one of the Counties Antrim, Derry or Galway.
He and a John Martin, probably older than William, traveled from Londonderry, County Derry, N IRE to New York, New York, USA on 25 April 1865 on the steamship Stadacona. Their passage had been paid for by someone in America who 'engaged' the McCorkle Lines and paid their fare. I have not been able to determine who that person was.

At the time they left Londonderry, their emigration sheet shows their home on 25 April 1865 as Aughill (possibly Aghahull townland), Aughnish Parish, Derry. [The spelling may be incorrect - it may be a phonetic spelling of what the clerk heard]. The record also showed a Rose Martin still living at home in Aughill, relationship unknown.
Their Post Office is listed as Ramelton.
DNA testing has shown direct matches to Martins who lived in County Antrim. That may have been William & John Martin's county of birth.
William was Naturalized as an American citizen on 18 September 1871. His record is in the Court
of Common Pleas, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA.
It stated he had arrived at the Port of New York (USA) in 1865.

He married Mary F. Cronin, born in Ireland, in Philadelphia on 23 October 1879.
Mary's parents, William and Eliza Cronin were both born in Ireland.

William was enumerated in the 1870 census of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The 1880 Philadelphia Census shows the birth locations of he and his parents as:
William, born Ireland, Father born Ireland, Mother born Ireland
However, the 1900 Philadelphia Census shows:
William born Ireland, Father born Scotland, Mother born Scotland

William died 8 July 1904 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
He is buried in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have any suggestions about how I might find records of this Martin family in Ulster, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you for the advice.

Bill Martin Denver, Colorado, USA
billmartin44@ieee.org
