Dear Peta,
I have found another Fredrick. He was the son of Frederick Philippi and Mary (Elizabeth) Burge and he was born in 1874.
He married Caroline in 1912.
I have details of 2 sons - Trevor and Harold. Trevor may have son Paul.
There is a grave in the Talbot cemetary showing the death of Frederick Philippi in 1958 and his son Harold who died in 1985.(one grave)
Also in same cemetary is a grave for Trevor Talbot Philippi -died 1995 and his wife Lillian who died in 2002.
This is not my side of the family.
Do you need any further information?
Jan
hi Jan

My Frederick married Caroline Locarnini 30/10/1912 in Talbot, Victoria (Goldfields). They later lived in Murwillumbah NSW - can't have been for long as she had left him before the war ended. I believe that Frederick later returned to the Talbot area and both sons lived there as adults (I'm told they remained in Murwillumbah for some time after their father returned to Vic. I'm also told that one went on to become a mayor - perhaps of Bendigo or Ballarat?).

Thanks
Peta

Hi Jan

This would be much easier if they'd give the kids different names wouldn't it? I don't actually know anything about the Phillipi's - trying to work it out. What I do know is that my g-grandmother was married to a Frederick Phillipi, prior to 'running off' with a man who calledhimself George Shaw, but whom we believe to be Lester Hines. Neither ever kept in touch with their families, and it is only through research that we've discovered that there was a previous marriage and children. So we're trying to locate any descendants who may be able to fill us in/give grandmother some information after finding out in her 80s that her parents weren't married and she wasn't an only child. The hazards of genealogy!

Love to hear from you if you have any info.

Cheers
Peta

William Philippi

My name is Kathy Philippi from Illinois. I am looking for information regarding William Philippi of Chicago, Illinois (my great-grandfather) but was born in Wisconsin according to the 1920 Chicago Census. He married (? that) a Bertha Slaler, Slaphl or Slapke (? on the spelling as we had hard time reading it on the census) and had 1 child (a son) with her. Their son's name was Edward William Philippi born in 1911 in Chicago, IL (my grandfather). William left Bertha and Edward when he was a baby. Bertha married John Bachli near between 1911 and 1920. In the 1920's Census, I found John and Bertha with Ed (8) and a mother-in-law Antonia F. Slaphl or Slapkl. If anyone has any information to share, please let me know. I am hitting a brick wall with finding out if Bertha was married to a William Philippi and where to go from there as it now seems that my grandfather had parents but nothing else. He is dead and never talked of his parents.

New info on Otto (Frederick) Phillippi; Phillips

Otto Phillips cemtery headstone shows a Bertha Brehmer married to Julius Brehmer, then married to Schupall. I believe this is Otto's sister, as next to her name it says Mother Charlotte Phillip. Obtained a death certificate for Charlotte, this shows she born 5 March 1834 and died 14 June 1911 in Brownstown Township, Wayne Cty, MI. The 1910 census shows Bertha married to Julius Brehmer and Charlotte living with them. Looking for info on any of the above names or any connection to them. I am looking for their home back in East Prussia, Germany. Otto left through Bremen from ships list. Cannot find any list for Bertha and Charlotte as of today; the 1910 census shows immigrated in 1901. Any help?? Thank you!

I am still trying to find information of my great-grandparents. What I do know now is that William Philippi had a son (Edward William Philippi) with Bertha Slapke. Bertha was born in Illinois and William born in Wisconsin. No records of William and Bertha being married seem to exist. Bertha did marry a John Bachli before 1920 and in the 1920 census they were living in Chicago with Edward who was 8 at the time of the census and with Bertha's mother, Antonia Slapke from Germany. Does anyone have any information of a William and Bertha ever being married or any information on either one of them at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Doris, My name is Julie and I was going through the message board and as I was reading some of your querie's I was wondering you could help me in my Philippi search. My great grandfather was Nicholaus Philippi he married a Maria(Mary) Thines? They were both born in Germany about 1838 and married there before there move to the U.S. about 1865? They had 6 children that I know of : Matthew(my grandfather),Maria,Franz,Catherina,John(Jno)?and a Gertruda?. They lived in the Chicago area and some of the children as adults moved to Milwaukee, Wis.area. What I was wondering if any of these name's sounded familiar in your family line?? Or if you had ever run across those name's in your searching?? Could you please write me back when you have time. It took me along time to get this far and now I have bumped into a huge wall?
Re: Searching for Philippi's,Coppersmith's,Angelwroth's in Milwaukee

I am up dating my message about my family. My grandparents were Mathias and Elisabeth(Leyendecker)Philippi. They were married in Cook Co. Ill on june 14, 1893. They lived in Michigan for a few years until 1913 when my father was born in MilwaukeemWis. Their children were Viola (Philippi)Neiskes, Claudia(Philippi)Angleroth, two children who died in childhood and then my father Raymond John Philippi. Aunt Viola Neiskes had a daughter Rita she married a Tony Coppersmith. They lived upstair's from my grandparent's. They had several children two of them I remember was Anthony(tony)jr. and his sister Ruth I think or it could have been Ruth Marie? She is about the same age as me. I was born in 1958. If there are any Coppersmith's still out there in Wisconsin searching and any of this sounds a little familiar to your's please write to me at julie45ala@myexcel.com I would be glad to hear from you.
Searching for Nicholas & Mary(Marie)Philippi children

I am asking for help in locating Nicholas & Mary(Marie)Philippi children. Nicholas was born in 1838 in Prussia, Mary was also born in Prussia in 1838. She was a few months older than he was how many i don't know yet. With some help I was able to know their children's names. In the 1880 Chicago census Mathias was 12 years of age his birthdate is january 26, 1868, he is my grandfather. Maria was born 1871 and was 9 years old in 1880 in Chicago. Franz was age 7 in 1880 in Chicago his birth year would be 1873. Catherina age 5 in 1880 put her birth at 1875. John was 2 in 1880 so his birth year would be 1878 and Gertruda was born in 1879. I do not know anything else about Nicholas and Mary so I think that Chicago was as far as they might have gotten?? Another census taken in Milwaukee,Wis. was in 1920. There is list's a part of Mathias(Now listed as Mathew). Mathew Philippi age 51, b. Ill, farmer. Mathew's wife (my grandmother) Elisabeth(Leyendecker)Philippi age 45, b. Mi. (Detroit), Claudia there 2nd child age 19, b. Mi, and then Raymond John Philippi(my father age 5, b. Milwaukee, Wis. Mathew and Elisabeth's 1st daughter was Viola, she was born in 1895 and was already married to her husband Otto Neiskes in Milwaukee. Can anybody out there tell me if they were maybe in your family or maybe found these names in your searches. I sure would appreciate any help I can get. You can e-mail me direct to my mailbox at (julie45ala@myexcel.com) And if i can help you in your search I will do my best.
Karen,
All my Philippi families came from Alsace, but I know I've received queries for some who lived across the border, in Germany. You may want to try the 2 mailing lists' archives (PHILIPPI and PHILLIPPI). You might find a contact there. Good luck.

I have a Johann George, with a wife, Anna Margaretha, but they were in Volksberg, Alsace, and probably not the ones you are looking for. I don't have any children recorded for them at all. Sorry I'm not more help.

Philippi's from Detzem, Germany

I have data on the Philippi family from the Catholic 'Familienbach' for the Detzem Parish and also data transcribed from the church records. First name listed in 'Family Book' is Georg, born 8Sep1772 in Longen, died 19Sep1849, (age about 80) married 5Feb1801 in Detzem to Maria Helena Stein. They had one child. Maria died 2Feb1802, age abt 25. Georg married #2 10Jan1803 in Detzem to Maria Catharina Stein. They had one child. Maria died 18Oct1803, age abt 20. Georg married #3 8Feb1804 in Detzem to Anna Margaretha Plunien, born 15Dec1773. They had 9 children. Anna died 19May1833.

Georg's parents are shown as Johann Georg Philippi & Margaretha Weber, but no other data for them.

Georg's son Nicolaus, born 6November1804 married 11Nov1832 Margaretha Schmitz in Thornich. Notation shows they came to America, but does not give a date. Would have been after 1841since records show a 3rd child, Mathias, died 12Oct1841, 5 days old. No indication in these records that siblings of Nicolaus also came to the US. There is, however, other data for the siblings & some of their children. Send an e-mail if you are interested in any of the other info.

I read your posting on the Philippi message board with some interest. My 2G grandmother was Anna Margaretha PHILIPPI from Merzlich near Trier. Her home church was St. Nikolous in Konz where she was baptized on 28 Aug 1833. From the baptismal records, her parents were Johan and Maria Catharina (Mai) PHILIPPI. She later married Peter TING in 1857 and moved from Merzlich/Konz to Hohensonne/Aach (also near Trier) where all her children were born and baptized in the Aach parish church. Where is Detzem with respect to Trier?

Merzlich is on the south bank of the Mosel just west of Trier and Aach is about 10km north of the Mosel almost due north of Trier. Is Detzem close enough that we are talking, perhaps, cousins?
I am looking for information regarding William Philippi of Chicago, Illinois (my great-grandfather) but was born in Wisconsin according to the 1920 Chicago Census. He married (? that) a Bertha Slapkl (or Slaphl ? on the spelling) and had 1 child (a son) with her. I am hitting a brick wall with finding out if Bertha was married to a William Philippi.

Julie:

Sorry haven't checked the message board in quite awhile. I have not been able to find anything on William Philippi who would have been married (?) to a Bertha in the late 1910's. William and Bertha were the parents of Edward William Philippi who was born in 1911 (my grandfather). Edward was born in Chicago, IL and lived there and died there in 1980. I do know that his mother, Bertha, divorced William and remarried to a John Bacali who moved his wife and kids to Wisconsin while Edward stayed in Chicago where he married Emily Enger. Maybe there is a connection between your family and mine? If you get this post, please email me at emeraldeyes13@comcast.net and let's compare notes, as you suggested.

Re: George Philippi

Following is the obituary from the September 30, 1910 issue of the Clintonville Tribune.
"Mrs. George A. Philippi whose demise we briefly mentioned last week was born in the town of Center, Outagamie County, Wis., Oct. 9, 1871 and died at her home in the town of Bear Creek, Thursday, Sept. 22 1910 at the age of 35 years, 11 months and 13 days. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Smith and was united in marriage to Geo. A. Philippi on Jan. 7, 1892 in St. Edwards Catholic church at Mackville, Wis. Nine children were born to them, all of whom are living. They are: Alban H., Norman, Viola, Rosa, Alice, Veronica, Katie, Sylvester, Lauretta, the oldest being 17 years old and the youngest a babe of four weeks. Mrs. Philippi's death was due to complications following childbirth she having been a suffering? for four weeks. Her early demise takes from the town of Bear Creek one of its noble women and best citizens and the devoted husband and children who have drank so deeply of the cup of sorrow have the sympathy of the many friends in their bereavement."

Re: Philippi's from Detzem, Germany

Detzem is exactly 10 KM east of Trier on the Mosel River. That is how the village got it's name, 10-Detzem. I am a decendent of Nicholas Philippi's son George and was fortunate to have visited Detzem a few years ago.

I don't believe that your family is related at least for several generations back from Nicholas since I have tracked Nicholas's family back to the early 1700 in Longen which is a village about 1 KM north of Detzem also on the Mosel.
