Looking for descendants of Thomas Pate and Hannah Philips Williams, Colonial Virginia

Thomas Pate was born in Virginia in 1728 and died in 1814. He married Hannah Philips Williams, a widow. He was the son of Matthew Pate and Anne Read and a grandson of Col. Thomas Pate.

Col. Thomas Pate was born in England c. 1650, emigrated to Colonial Virginia in 1672, and inherited a 2100-acre tobacco plantation in Gloucester County. About 1690, he started ferry operations across the York River to what became the port city of Yorktown, primarily for export of tobacco to England. By 1694, he also owned an ordinary (inn) at the port of Yorktown, where he died in 1703.

He held a number of civil and military positions in Gloucester County, representing the county in the House of Burgesses in 1684. He was a church warden and vestryman of the Petsworth Parish Church in Gloucester for at least seven years. Nathaniel Bacon, leader of Bacon's Rebellion, died in Col. Pate's home in 1676.

He married Elizabeth (surname unknown) c. 1675. They apparently had six children, who were all baptized at Abingdon Parish Church. Their children, as recorded in the church's registry, were:
John -- born 1677, died 1706 (His daughter Sarah married Col. Wilson Cary c. 1728.)
[likely daughter] -- 1679/80 (name illegible)
Elizabeth -- born 1680
Mary -- born 1684
Matthew -- born 1686 (see list of children below)
William -- born 1689

Matthew Pate married Anne Read c. 1710, grandaughter of Col. George Read, who was a greatgreat-grandfaher of George Washington. Here are their children:
Jacob -- married Zilla Broach. Died 1752, Surry County, Virginia. [They were not the parents of Rev. William Pate d. 1837 in Georgia.]
Sarah -- married William Anderson 1736-7
Jeremiah -- married (?) Bender
Matthew married (?) Buck
Rebecca -- married George Newell
Rachel -- married 1. Robert Robinson, 2. John Warrington
Thomas -- born 1728, died 1814, married Hannah Philips Williams (a widow)

Caution: There may be more misinformation about this family on the Internet, particularly Jacob and Zilla, than any other American Pate family. This is primarily due to the booklet published by John Ben Pate c. 1915. This work should be disregarded concerning this family and its ancestry. For a more reliable source about the descendants of Matthew Pate and Anne Read, consult the William & Mary Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol XII, 1904, pgs. 119-120 and 196-198, which is available on the Internet.

This Thomas Pate family remains an unsolved mystery regarding its present-day ancestors, despite the efforts of the greatest Pate genealogists in its history, such as the late Jinks Pate-Lee, Joel Pate, and Dr. Jim Peacock. Traditional genealogy using both family and public records is now providing very little information. It appears that our best hope to link present-day Pate families to this early American family is through genetic genealogy, or DNA analysis.

Fortunately, we have a ready resource for genetic genealogy through our Pate DNA Project. Though founded only three years ago, we have 110 members, and we are certain that a descendant of this family can be linked to one of the family lines in our Project.

If you know, or if you are personally, a documented male Pate descendant of this family, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Grants for DNA tests are available through the generosity of our Project's members for any man who may need assistance in purchasing the test or who would otherwise have no interest in joining. Inquiries to me will be held in strictest confidence by the administrators of the Project.

For all descendants of Col. Thomas Pate, the Pate DNA Project, through its Pate Genealogical Convocation, has placed an impressive memorial marker for him in the beautiful and historic cemetery of Grace Episcopal Church (the original York Parish Church) in Yorktown. This marker was placed in September 2008 in one of the most desirable places in the cemetery, close to the church and next to the gravestone for George Read, gg-gf of George Washington.

I have also prepared a timeline for the life of Col. Thomas Pate, which I believe is the most complete and comprehensive study of his history and accomplishments ever compiled. Since it is lengthy (three pages) and the format would not present well on this website, I will send a copy of it by email attachment (PDF), to anyone who sends me an email requesting it.

For any descendant, this is a great opportunity to make a significant and unique contribution to Pate genealogy, helping solve one of its oldest and most difficult mysteries.

All comments, corrections, and questions are welcome, either on this website or by private email.

You are invited to view our Project's website at this link: www.familytreedna.com/public/pate-dna-project . You may find the list of most distant ancestors informative on our chart of "Y-DNA Results".

A. J. Pate
Group Administrator
Pate DNA Project
I am not related to this family but I came across an article in an old newspaper about the 4th annual reunion of the descendants of Joseph and Mary Philips. It notes that they came from Wales in 1755 and had four sons. The article also mentions a Dr. F. J. Philips of Pittsburgh.

The article appeared in the Pittsburgh Dispatch, 31 May 1905, on page 4. This paper is on microfilm number N-59, roll number 131 and is available in the microfilm department of of Main Branch (Oakland) of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. You can request a copy via interlibrary loan through the library's Pennsylvania Department.

Philips and the 1935 Boston Braves

I have come across some autographs that my father had in his scrapbook. C. W Philips is one of them (although I am not too sure about the initials). There are 15 in all and with the exception of 3 (C.W. being one of them), I have found the information on them. In 1935,the Boston Braves baseball team stopped in Fayetteville, NC to play an exhibition game on their way from spring training. 10 of the autographs were players on the team. One was a coach and one was a minor league manager. Can anyone tell me what relation or position, Mr. Philips had to that team? I have a picture of the autograph if you would like to see..

According to the marriage license, J.J. was born about 1880 in Crittenden County, Ky, and was a farmer in/near Azalia, Ky. I have not been able to find any information about this family in any census record. Would greatly apprecate hearing from someone who has information about the Philips' family.

Thank you very much
Tonia

Re: Josiah Philips of Baltimore, 1800's

Here is a copy of the messages I had over on the Phillips board when I thought that was how it was spelled. I will correct the spelling to what I know now.
_________________

Does anyone know of any resources in identifying the members of the various Myers and Philips families in Baltimore, Maryland, from the mid 1700's through the early 1800's? I have hit a roadblock at this point:

Husband: Charles W. Myers, b. 1839 Baltimore
Wife: Sarah Jane Philips, b. 1846 Baltimore

I know from later census records that their parents were also born in Baltimore, and there are a tantilizing number of earlier Myers and Philips to be found in earlier records from Baltimore. Can anyone provide any information?

I have some data on Sarah Jane Philips from an old family bible, but it doesn't go into any detail about where her ancestors were born.

Here is the information I have:

E. Reb Philips, b. ???, d. 27 Feb 1849
*Paul Philips, b. 1793, d. 18 Dec 1860
**Josier Philips, b. 5 Oct 1827
***Sarah Jane Philips, b. 1846 Baltimore

I have found Paul, his wife Elizabeth, Josiah (Josier was a misspelling) and Sarah on the 1860 Census in Baltimore. The spelling in the census is Philips with one "l". No other trace yet, but I'll keep looking on this board and on the Phillips board.

Bill Manzke
bmanzke@columbus.rr.com
I am looking for information on Josiah Philips (b. 5 Oct 1827) of Baltimore and his family. He is my GGG-Grandfather through his daughter Sarah J Philips. Sarah married Charles W E K Myers in Baltimore.

I presently only have two pieces of information about him. He is listed in the 1860 Census with his parents and daughter. I also have a third-hand note of entries in an old family Bible where his name is misspelled "Josier." The same page lists his daughter Sarah, his father Paul and his grandfather E. Reb Philips. No other relatives are listed.

I would appreciate any information on my Philips ancestors above, or other relatives in the Baltimore area.

Thanks,

Bill
bmanzke@columbus.rr.com
Rescued Photo, PHILIPS Surname, Possible Civil War Era

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them. Unfortunately this one doesn't state where it was taken, but it was obtained from Indiana.

It's of a couple, and by they way that they are dressed, it appears that it might have been about the time of the Civil War. Her corsetted waist and hooped skirt on her dress make me think of Gone With the Wind.

Written across the bottom of it is: Mr. W.F. & Mrs. C. Philips.

My family thought we were descended from Joseph and Mary who were born in Wales and came to the U.S. with four sons. Now we are told that is wrong. Also there is some confusion as to the middle name of John born 1744 in Wales and died 1827 in Kentucky. We thought it was Henderson, now are told it might be Lee. I'm told that dna test proved that this John is not the son of Joseph, b.1716 in Wales and d.1792 in PA.
The second L was added to Philips by Samuel. My line is:
John Henderson? Lee? Phillips b.1744 Pembrokshire, Wales, d. 1827 Ky. M. Mary Stockton b.1766 d. 1848, KY.
Samuel P. Phillips, b. 1797 Tenn. d. 1891 m. Elizabeth Tompkins b.1798 Tenn. d. 1890, Tenn.
Joseph Tompkins Phillips b.1822 Tenn. d.1906 OK. m.1865 Sarah Jane Dutton b.1844 d. 1935
Emmett Fisk Phillips b.1867 Ark. d. 1940 OK. m.1890 Nancy Elizabeth Stultz b.1873 TX. d. 1936 OK.
Harvey Lee Phillips b. 1895 OK. d.1971 CA. m.1920 Della Ludy Caddel b.1905 Tx.d. 1995 CA.
I would like to hear from anyone with a connection to this line. And would very much appreciate any help.

Re: Irby Philips

Amy:

Since my previous Feb 2001 post above to which you replied, I have found a great deal of information on Irby and I not have seen anything to suggest he was related to your Abraham/Abram.

Irby, who died in Rockingham Co, in 1838, was in the VA Militia in the Revolutionary War and his pension application (filed from Rockingham Co, in 1833) gives quite a bit of his history; briefly, he was born in Richmond VA but was raised in Charles City County. He migrated to NC sometime in the late 1780's from Charles City Co and lived in Rockingham Co., Wake Co, and Hillsborough before coming back to Rockingham to permanently settle. I was looking for a connection to possibly explain why he chose to immigrate to Rockingham Co. in the first place but I did not find any evidence to support any connection between him and Abraham..

As you probably know, Abraham/Abram was a fairly prominent citizen in the area, so there is quite a bit of information available about him, but I have not found anything there either to indicate that he and Irby are related. Of course, the ultimate test for a connection (or not) would be a Y-chromosone DNA test. I am a direct descendent of Irby's father and I have a DNA determination on file with the Phillips Worldwide DNA Project. So, if you know a Phillips relative who has a direct male line back to David, and who might be interested in joining the project, I will be happy to pu you in touch with Nancy Kiser who is an assistant administrtor for this project and frequestly posts on the Phillips boards.

Incidentally, in the 1790 Rockingham Co. census every "Phillips" surname is spelled with one "L" not two, so I put no significance into similar (one "L" or two "L") spellings from this era.

I hope that this information is of some value to you.

BTW--Did your David Phillips live in Caswell Co at this time, and if so, do you know if his father or grandfather was the David who lived in Orange County, NC around 1755 (before Caswell separated from Orange in 1777?) Thanks.

Mike Phillips

I am searching for the siblings and parents of Laban Norton Matteson b. 1812 in Bennington Co. Vt. In 1832 he purchased some land from Solomon Matteson and his son Jared. Are they related??? Laban married Clarissa Daniels the daughter of Johnson Daniels and Rhoda King. Laban sold the land in 1838 and moved to Stamford Vt. He named his children: 1. Rhoda Clamana 2. Oscar Johson 3. Martha A. 4. Albert Norton 5. Andrew Laban 6. John King Matteson. The girls died young but the boys all married and had children. Albert Norton Matteson married Rosina Rogers, he was 17 and she was 14. Was the marriage annulled?? Divorce?? He married second to Anna Fletcher in Illinois. Did Albert and Rosina have any children??

My husband's great-grandfather is John William Phillips, supposedly born in GA; he was born 19 Feb 1830 and died 26 Mar 1914 in Austin, Travis Co, TX. We ordered a copy of his death certificate in the hopes it would reveal his parents names and birth place, however it states parents unknown. It also states that he was born in TN! Therefore the puzzle we thought perhaps was solved still remains a puzzle. Can you provide any information on your John William Phillips' parents and/or brothers & sisters? We do have his spouse and children so if you think there is a connection, please contact me at maxnchuck@mlode.com.

I’m not sure that our information will help you much, expecially if you are sure of the birth date and the Austin, Texas, connection.

Our John W(illiam) Phillips was born in 1852 according to the 1880 Census. We have a family letter that puts his birthplace at or near Stone Mountain, Georgia. He married Julia Frances Harris, according to our current best information. They had 11 children. Sylvester (Vester, Daddy V) was my mother’s father.

The place of death for John W and Julia is in doubt in our notes, but some information has them in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, at the time of death.

We have the father of our John W being Joseph M Phillips, (b 1826, Georgia). His wife was Sarah Huckaby (b in Georgia, maybe in 1826).

Our information is also shaky.

I used the 1860 Census as my control point and have the children of Joseph and Sarah listed as John W Phillips, E. C. Phillips, A.E. Phillips, W.E. Phillips, M. J. Phillips, and N.J. Phillips. These were all born in Georgia between 1852-1859.

My mother’s immediate family (Sylvester or Vester, my grandfather, born in Alabama) were residents of Madisonville, Texas, in Madison County, Texas. Vester’s first wife died and he moved and opened a business in Glenna Park, Texas (near Houston) where he remarried and later died.

Let me know if you want further details.

Hi all. I started this group a few years ago...but while it had a strong start...the focus of the group did not remain concentrated on this particular Philips family. After awhile, the group population was not compiled of Joseph and Mary ancestors and it seemed a moot (sp?) point to continue this group as it was intended. Since then I have started another email group called SWPAresearchers. This group focuses on many of the families that settled in Washington and Allegheny Counties in PA. As I am sure most of you know--The Rev David Philips and his bother Joseph settled in this area. As a result, researchers of the Joseph and Mary Philips family still found a home...so if you want to meet other Joseph and Mary Philips family members...this might be a good place to start: <a href="http://www.swparesearchers@yahoogroups.com" target="_blank">www.swparesearchers@yahoogroups.com. In addition to Philips family members, this group includes many other surnames from the Southwestern PA area as well...we have about a 100 members and it is a nice group.

I keep thinking about reviving the Philips family group...but I am just not so sure it will get the results of our family meeting our family...as I was hoping it would do.

Anyhow, sorry for it's demise...and I hope maybe you will find a home with the SWPA group.

Kindest Regards,

Amy Philips-Haller

Seeking Info on 5 abandoned Phillips Children

I am doing research for a friend, here is her story.
She was the 3rd child of five born to Fred Phillips and ann Baker. Fred and Ann had eventually abandoned all five children in different places.

The First child Carol born about 1958 was left somewhere between Chicago and Seattle about 1964

The next three were left at a grocery store in Seattle around 1967
they were

Jim who was born around 1960
Kathy born in 1962 Chicago
Cindy born 1964 Chicago

The last child was abandoned in a hospital in New Mexico around 1972

He was Danny born around 1966.

My friend was Middle child, she was eventually adopted and her records sealed.
She was around 5 when she was abandoned and remebers verry little of her parents. The only thing she knows is her immunization records for school said she was born in Chicago and apparently born at home.

Any info would be helpful

He married Elizabeth Philips 29 Oct 1771 in Shillingford St. George, Devon, where Elizabeth was born around 1739. Elizabeth's parents were John Philips and Ann Heard. Does anyone have these people in their tree?

Hi Sarah,

I am interested to see if you have any info on my Philips/Phillips/Philps family. My g-g-g'mother was Henrietta Philips (b.abt 1827) who married Robert Hayward in Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorset on 2 Nov 1857. Her father (my g-g-g-father) was Simon Philips.

Thanks,
Julia

Derrick Philips

I am looking for any information on Derrick Philips. He was born sometime in the mid to late 1800's in Pennsylvania. He met and married a Matilda Ruby, who was born in the same time frame in Wisconsin. They had a son, Henry Philips, who was born in Wisconsin in 1875, and died in Minnesota in 1973. Any help you can give me about Derrick, Matilda, or their parents would be greatly appreciated!

I am also interested in knowing about this Irby Philips on the 1790 census in Rockingham county (ie. who is he related to?). I am related to Abraham Philips in the same county, through a nephew, David Phillips. Trying to put pieces together.

Thanks, Amy.
