our Phillips were in Bucks County, PA at marriage in 1758.

What was your father's name? Grandfather's?

Do you know a male Phillips of your bloodline? His DNA analysis might help your research effort (as it did mine). I hope you can arrange it since we might be related.

--Doyle Phillips www.phillipsdnaproject.com

Deborah:

I have recently started doing my genealogy. I am having problems located that Phillips (Philips) in Wyoming Borough, Luzerne County, PA.
My great, great grandfather was:
Thomas Philips born 1853 his wife was Hannah born 1858. Both Thomas and Hannah were born in Wales. Thomas came to America in 1879 and Hannah in 1880. They settled on 4th Street, in Wyoming Borough in Luzerne County. Per the 1900 census Hannah had twelve children. Through the census I have been able to locate four of them.
Mary born 1883
Ruth born 1885
Lillian born 1889
Hannabel born 1894, married Thomas Thomas

I heard mention that their may have been twin boys, but with not being able to find an 1890 census it is hard to tell when they were born and if any children passed young. I know that Hannah is buried in the Wyoming Cemetery, in Luzerne County.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Billie

Would like to know more about his siblings also.

The father and mother of Samuel Harry Phillips, b. March 27, 1862 were Samuel Phillips and Emma Smith. Their names are all I have. As far as I know, I don't have those names in my Phillips line, but as I don't have a lot of info on my Phillips yet, you never know!! My great grandparents were Samuel Lackey and Iva Lou PHILLIPS; her parents were David W. Phillips and Hannah Thompson. My Phillips, I believe are mostly from PA and IL. Where are yours from? I will save your post just in case I come across your Phillips in my research!!

Thanks,
Sandy

I have one that was a telegram to my great grandfather (David John Garnon 1862)of the death of his Mother, Lydia. It was sent by Mary Ann. I am thinking it was Mary Ann Shankland, the daughter of Ann Garnon, seeing she is the the only grand-daughter that I see in my tree with the name Mary Ann.

Regards-
Joyce

The website that I posted to you was for "Texas Deaths, 1890-1976 (New Images)", which has about 4.5 million images that hasn't been indexed yet and has to be browsed image by image. You'll have to browse by county and date of death to find the record image.

Family search also has another link to "Texas Deaths-1890-1976", which is searchable. That site was where I found the 1973 death certificate for John Wilson Phillips's son, John Wilson Phillips, Jr.

Additionally, this Theophilus is often linked as a son of Justice John Phillips (1721-1794) and Anna Lott although I'm not sure this has been proven.

As far as I know, this particular Phillips line has not been DNA tested but, as Nancy Kiser reported, the family is most likely represented in either group 20 or 30 in the Phillips DNA Project.

Henry Disbrow Phillips (1793-1873) was the son of Theophilus Phillips ((1760-1840) and Margaret Disbrow (1769-1864) and was the huband of first Jane Cornell Fiester, 2nd Mary Anna Barney. They are buried in the Presbyterian Church cemetery in Lawrenceville, NJ.

From a history book of Hunterdon NJ:

"Henry Phillips, of the seventh generation in America, was born in Lawrenceville, Mercer county, New Jersey, 1796, died 1873. He was well educated, inherited his father's estate and passed his life as a landed proprietor. He retained the lands entrusted to him, managing them with skill and profit. He was a man of high character, whose influence was always exerted for the good of his community. He resided on one of the three farms included in his estate until two years before his death, when he retired to a home in Lawrenceville. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and politically a Whig and later a Republican. He was twice married, having by his first marriage seven children. One of his sons, John, is the father of Professor Alexander Phillips, of Princeton University, and Professor Warren Phillips, of Reno, Nevada. Other sons of Henry Phillips are: Reszo, of California; Theodore, of Langhorne, Pennsylvania. His three daughters are all deceased, two of them leaving issue. Henry Phillips married (second) Mary Anna Barney (see Barney VIII), born in Milton, Saratoga county, New York, August 18, 1824, daughter of Dr. Zadoc and Eliza (Swain) Barney, of Minaville, Montgomery county, New York. There was no issue by second marriage."

I have much more information regarding this famnily if you need it. Is it possible to photograph the portraits? I would like to see them.

Thank you, James Phillips

Re: William Phillips m. Amanda Doolin, New Madrid, MO

Here is William and Amanda on the 1850 New Madrid MO census:

William Phillips 30 bc 1820 AL
Amanda Phillips 24 bc 1826 KY
Alfred Phillips 3 bc 1847 MO
Melinda Phillips 0 bc 1850 MO

William must have either died, divorced or deserted his wife between 1850 and 1860, because Amanda appears as head of household in the 1860 Dunklin Co MO census as follows:

Amanda Dulin 37 bc 1823 KY
John B Powell 17 bc 1843 KY
Alfred Phillips 12 bc 1848 MO
Margaret Phillips 7 bc 1853 MO
Amanda Phillips 5 bc 1855 MO
Mary F Chandler 3 bc 1857 MO
Joel A Chandler 38 bc 1822 GA grocery keeping

It seems odd that Amanda is listed with her maiden name Dulin instead of her married named Phillips. I cannot find Amanda on the 1870 census, but I can find her Phillips children as follows in New Madrid Co MO:

James A Phillips 24 bc 1846 KY farmer
Lucretie Phillips 23 bc 1847 MO
Willie Phillips 3 bc 1867 MO
Quinny Phillips 18 (female) bc 1852 MO
Amanda Phillips 15 bc 1855 MO
Jefferson Branum 19 bc 1851 MO farm laborer
Vira Franklin 30 bc 1840 NC domestic servant
Mollie Franklin 5 bc 1865 MO
Abby Franklin 1 bc 1869 MO

On this census, Alfred appears as James A. His sisters appear to be living with him: Quinny (probably Margaret) and Amanda. His mother has probably either died or remarried.

And finally I can find James Alfred on the 1880 New Madrid Co MO census as follows:

James A. Phillips 33 bc 1847 MO MO MO
Theressa Phillips 32 bc 1848 MO KY MO
William Phillips son 13 bc 1867 MO
Percy B. Phillips son 1 bc 1879 MO
Thomas J. Chandler half brother 16 bc 1865 MO GA MO

The fact that Thomas J. Chandler is listed as James' half brother indicates his mother Amanda must have remarried a Chandler. Perhaps she married Joel A. Chandler who was living in her household in 1860.

If you have a male Phillips relative who would agree to take a painless and private Y-DNA test, you might be able to establish which of the 73 different Phillips families identified thus far is your Phillips family.

Sincerely,
Nancy Kiser
Volunteer administrator
Phillips DNA Project
www.phillipsdnaproject.com

The name Theophilus occurs in a New Jersey Phillips family that is represented by Phillips Family DNA Group 20 at this link:

http://www.phillipsdnaproject.com/ylineage/pedigrees-by-fami...

It also occurs in the family of Rev. George Phillips of Watertown, MA, represented by Phillips Family DNA Group 30 at this link:

http://www.phillipsdnaproject.com/ylineage/pedigrees-by-fami...

Despite family lore to the contrary, DNA evidence indicates these two Phillips families do not share a common paternal Phillips ancestor within 1,000 years.

Sincerely,
Nancy Kiser
Volunteer administrator
Phillips DNA Project

Parents of unknown Phillips were George & Ann (Roch)Phillips m. 1843 in Wales and later moved to England. One known sibling, John Henry Phillips b. 1849 in Wales who emigrated to Canada in 1870. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
