I just came across your post on Josephine Phinney m. Welcome Seymore Nott. I am decended from Welcome's brother Gardner. You mentioned having photo's, could there possibly be any of Welcome and his wife Josephine or any of the Nott family? If so, I would greatly appreciate any and would be more than happy to pay for cost of photocopying and postage. Or possibly they could be scanned to my email address. Thank You ...Susie ... email address is susieqrockinl2000@yahoo.com

Dear Cousin James, Thank you so much for your response. You wrote earlier than you had GEDCOM files, I believe. If you have some of the early Phinney records, I'd be very grateful. I have copies of Mayflower Society applications, but they are difficult to read. I am the ggranddaughter of George Washington Phinney and was named for his wife. I also have quite a few photographs of the MA family where G. W. was born. A query many years ago led to the discovery of a daughter of Josephine Phinney m. Welcome Seymore Nott. There was a pioneer photographer in that family, so we were able to exchange quite a lot of photographs. Perhaps you would be interested. I'd be very happy to exchange information. You may e-mail me directly at fmeek12@bitstreet.com, if you care to.

Sincerely, Frances McCullough Meek, Texas.

Finney/Phinney/Ohio

Greetings,

I have been researching my Finney heritage for several years now and I have not been able to get past my Great Great Grandfather Isaac B. Finney. This man is my "Brick Wall" ancestor. He lived in Coshocton County Ohio during the 1860 and 1870 Census and moved to Gilmore, Washington Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio in 1871 and died there in 1874. Isaac B. Finney's Civil War Muster Rolls and Pension records indicate that he was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The Death record that recorded Isaac's passing in 1874 indicates he was born in Tuscarawas County. The record also lists his age in years, months, and days and I have calculated his birth date to be on or about November 21, 1830.

I have been researching this man for about 15 years now and I have not been able to locate any records of this man prior to his marriage to Rachel Orr on September 11, 1853 in Perry Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

During my years of researching the Finney families in Tuscarawas County I have not been able to connect Isaac to any of the branches. The Finney families in Washington Township where Isaac lived at the time of his death were of Irish origin and my Grandfather stated in his written family history notes that the Irish came into our family when Isaac, his Grandfather, married the Irish Rachel Orr in 1853.

I had also not seen a reference to a Phinney in the areas records until recently. I found a death record for a Thomas Oscar Phinney which states he was born at Dover, Tuscarawas County, Ohio in 1836. This is fairly close to Isaac's birth year of 1830. Thomas was the son of Anson and Cornelia Phinney who lived in Franklin County Ohio. Anson's brother Barnabas Phinney lived nearby him in the 1850 census. I have found that these gentleman are part of "Mother Finney's" family who arrived in America in the 1600's. So I began to take a closer look at this very large family.

It appears that Isaac and Rachel named some of their children with names that were used in Mother Finney's family. Isaac's surviving oldest son was named Ozias and his oldest daughter was named Keziah and another one of his son's was named George Washington Finney and there was an Isaac Jr. Another name connection is one of my Uncles has the middle name of Loring.

I have found the names Isaac, Ozias, Keziah, George W. and Loring used in Mothers Finney line and they are in my line as well. Is this only a coincidence or was he naming his children after those that came before him as was common in those times? I also noticed that the middle initial of "B" is prominent in this line.

I would appreciate and information or suggestions that you may have on how I can find out the name of the parents of

Isaac B. Finney

Thank you.
That would be great if you wouldn't mind digging it out. My Nana, Perces Phinney Merrifield is a direct decendant of the various John Phinneys. I found it somewhere else on the internet. Go to this address: http://www.phinneysplace.com/genealogy/p185.htm#i2558

The more backing up information I can have for my paper the better. I did find out that Edmund Phinney is a great great great or more uncle. I'm not a direct decendant of him but of one of his brothers, John Phinney.

I am attaching a file with both my email address and mailing address. Thank you for replying to my message and helping me out.

PS. Change the ending to .doc on the attachment to view it. It wouldn't let me send a word document.

I have not been here for a long time. But... I have my mothers records that show how we are related to Thomas Rodgers and she was a Phinney. We are also related to John Phinney and John Finney there were several generations with that name. Also if you are aware of it origonaly the name was Finney. Until a father and son had a disagreement over a step mother. The son left home "early" and once he had his six children baptised he had the spelling of the name changed to Phinney. This is acording to historical and church records. So the "Finney" who married Mary Rogers line later switched to Phinney. I have to look again to see where it happened but I have it in the records. This is off the top of my head after not looking at it for a year or two now. The info is in a box right now but I can try to dig out if you want to contact me we can exchange mailing address if you want a copy.

If you do have this information I would love to have it. I am a direct descendant of John Phinney the founder of Gorham, ME. I am also doing a project on the fact that he is related to Thomas Rogers who was on the Mayflower. I am tracing Thomas Rogers roots forward to around 1877. So if there is any way of getting this information to me it would greatly help out.

There is a great site, www.stevemorse.org where you can search by exact date of birth + first name. Great way to find women who married.
http://www.stevemorse.org/birthday/privateeye.html

I tracked down a son of heir this way when I didn't know her married name (or his name). I had to do some cross-checking with ancestry.com (Property and Directory indexes, looking at names + addresses in common) and I had to have some luck, in that my quarry named her daughter for her mother and sister. These days people name their children as if they were puppies.

Veromi is the best people finder, with a 24 hr membership that's not too bad, but I didn't really need them. I used Steve's site to search for First Name + Middle initial + exact date of birth and got ONE hit. I used Ancestry to find the address and see who else was associated with that person. Then I used switchboard.com to find a current phone number.

Good luck. Do it. Many people regret they never reached out, or maybe they tried, but failed to find you and are yearning for contact.

Susan Kelley
Santa Cruz Ca

Eleanor Phinney obit

Mrs. Eleanor Phinney
1940

Mrs. Eleanor PHINNEY passed away at her home in Short Tract on Friday, November 24, after an illness of several months.

She was born on Jan. 16th, 1865 in the village of Bergen and spent the greater part of her childhood in Batavia. When seventeen years of age she moved to this locality and on August 5, 1885 was joined in marriage to Willard H. PHINNEY. During the fifty-four years, from that time until the present, they have lived in the same house, making it through all this time a home of hospitality to all. Eleanor PHINNEY was first of all a home-maker, a wife and a mother, lending a charm to her welcome that her friends cannot forget.

At about the age of fifteen she united with the Baptist Church of Batavia. She was a member of the O. E. S., Chapter 630, and, as long as her health permitted, took an active interest in its proceedings.

She is survived by her husband, one son, Edward Everett, and two granddaughters, Eleanor Jean and Elaine Marjorie, also two nephews, DeMars and DeForrest BEZANT, of Rochester.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Short Tract M. E. Church, Rev. F. M. POLAND, pastor, officiating. Burial was made in the Short Tract Cemetery.

[Northern Allegany Observer obituary, transcribed by Louise Y. Mills, 2003, from Cora Lahr's scrapbooks, Fillmore, NY]

I am that grandson of James Thomas Phinney in Fort Worth. Are you related to C. W.(Christopher Wright) Phinney who married Ola Kates?
When I lived in Ft. Worth, I met Christopher at my home. I barely remember him. Fascinated to hear that someone else has information on this family.
When my father died in 1977, I searched and searched for relatives w/o much success. Christopher (Uncle Wright, my father called him) was named for his great grandfather Christopher, a son of Patrick's. His middle name Wright from his mother's Arkansas family (Sarah Isabella Wright )
Pls. reply when and if possible

Is this Obadiah Phinney one who was born 1 Mar 1781, Williambsburg, Hampshire County, MA and died 10 Mar 1862 in East Rushford, NY and was the son of David Phinney (1756-1831)and Judith Nash (1760-1839)? If so, he's in my line but, other than some info on his 11 siblings, I have nothing else on him, to include any info on a wife. If this is the same person and you have any info you'd care to share, I'd certainly appreciate it. And if you want any info I've got please let me know.

Besides replying here on the board, I'd appreciate it if you could CC: copies to my genealogy account, genealogist.tom@gmail.com and my normal email address of putnam.tom@gmail.com. All my genealogy info goes to the first account and I only check it about once a week while I check my normal account daily.

Thanks. Hope I can help you.

Tom

The only information I have on him is his birth (13 May 1807; Canterbury, Windham County, CT) his death (2 May 1876; Canterbury, Windham County, CT) and that he had 4 siblings: Adaline Phinney (m. George Tyler); Arlemusia (where DID they get these names!!) Phinney (m. James Stout); Henrietta Phinney; and Philander Phinney (b. 1810 or 1812, CT; died 25 Feb 1892, New Milford, PA). Citation for this info is Phinney Families in America, Individual 563.

I also have his mother's name and her parent's name and at least 4 generations back on his father's side except for his father's mother's side where I have only her father's name. All that info is available in the citation I mentioned or I can provide it. Let me know.

If you contact me here at Roots Web, please send a CC to my normal email of putnam.tom@gmail.com. I'll reply here so the thread stays intact and having the CC to the other address insures I get the messages quickly as I only check this address periodically.

Tom

Hi,
I am looking for descendants of the above to share and compare information. Several of us 4th cousins in the HOLLISTER LINE are working on descendants of STEPHEN HOLLISTER & ANNA SPRAGUE. We know that a good share of the information in the HOLLISTER BOOK on our line came from SMITH HOLLISTER PHINNEY, a son of JERAH PHINNEY & MARY MARELLA HOLLISTER. We are working on getting as complete information as possible and would love to make contact with any descendants. I own the HOLLISTER BIBLE with alot of dates and information on the children of STEPHEN & ANNA, but not everything is complete. I also have a 50th Wedding picture of my GG Grandparents SAMUEL & SARA HOLLISTER that has SMITH HOLLISTER PHINNEY & DAVID PHINNEY in it. Taken 1890. So if any of you are descendants of this line I would love to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Allene Trowbridge Hintz

I have located her marriage record (Shutesbury MA town clerk's office) and her obituary (Cazenovia, NY historian's office)but there is no death record, and I have not located a birth record either. I have a 3x great grandmother, Sarah Reed (married Lorenzo Cuningham), but I have found nothing other than census records and her grave (Maple Grove Cemetery, Otisco, NY).

Theodore Phinney

A special request to any Phinney reseachers: I received a request for information from a person who speaks only Spanish regarding Theodore Phinney who was born in Cuba. If anyone has any leads on this family, please email me. The following is all I was given:
Benjamin Phinney born in Nova Scotia married Susana Morse who was born in England. Their son was Theodore Phinney who married Anna Barrett in Cuba and their children were Jose, Susan, Deidamia, and Theodore Jr. Theodore Jr married Victoria Bello and they had many children. Theodore Jr left Cuba in 1856 to go to Washington(?) and never came back. He might have gone to Boston or Newport, Rhode Island, as well. The request is for any information about what happened to Theodore Jr. Where did he end up, did he have another family, etc?
Thanks in advance for help.
