The parents of Columbia Jane Gilpin were John Gilpin, born June 25, 1822 in Cedar Mills, Adams County, Ohio; and Jane S. Hughs born June 7, 1821. Her parents were Hudson Hughs and Nancy McCormick. Jane died on 1 September, 1889. Both are buried in Beaty Cemetery near Cedar Mills, Brush Creek Township. Are you familiar with Morrison Godby Gilpin born April 11, 1920 and died March 15, 1925 of a fractured skull? He is buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Sandy Springs, Ohio. I don't have much else on him.

Re: Caroline Jane SMITH KEMPTON PIATT d before 1849

Years later I see numerous mistakes I made in this post. The probate record is important however.

Records of Piatt family often omit the lineage of Caroline KEMPTON, wife of Dr. William F. PIATT. She was a widow at the time of her marriage. In 1825 her first husband, Captain Noah Stoddard KEMPTON died. They had two children Ferdinand Cortez Kempton and Sarah Jane KEMPTON who married James K Turner at Trinity Church in 1840.

Caroline and William Piatt were married in 1829 and were deceased at the time of the Probate, so Eliza, their daughter, was represented by a surrogate.

My quest is always to find more information about Sarah COURTNEY? KELSO SMITH. She was born in 3 August 1779 probably in NY and lived until 27 August 1869. It is probable considering the naming patterns of her children and grandchildren that her maiden name was COURTNEY. There were Courtneys at Trinity Church when she was born. My grandfather was taken to Trinity Church by his father, grandson of Sarah, and told they had relatives buried there. Who knows which relatives is the question. Sarah's granddaughter Sarah Kempton was married there as I noted above.

Sarah COURTNEY? married first Mr. Kelso. I have seen possibilities of Thomas and James being his name. They married about 1800 and had three daughters
Caroline, Mary and Susannah. Mr. Kelso died a few years later and Sarah married second Captain Andrew Hall SMITH.
They had one son, Eugene Theodore SMITH. Her daughters, notably Mary occasionally used the name SMITH, which added to the confusion.

Susannah, is listed as Susan KELSO CHURCH at her Greenwood Cemetery grave, where her mother, SARAH KELSO SMITH, who died at the age of 91, is also buried. Eugene and his wife died suddenly in 1861 and are buried in the plot adjacent to Mary Kelso Haskins in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Queens NY.

I do not know where William F and Caroline Piatt are buried. They lived in New York City at the times of their deaths.

I hope family researchers will note Caroline's data and will join in the quest to gather accurate facts about this family group.

Thank you
Lynn Keller

I have a little information on the Thornburgs sent to me many years ago by a descendant. The work seems to be a small part of a work by Charles C Thornburgh III but the collection of pages is not complete according to the page numbers.

Thomas Thornburg married Dinah/Diana Piatt (Piatt appears with various spellings). Thomas bought 402 acres on Chartiers Creek from James and Lydia Brisson on 13 January 1806. Thomas added 33 acres on 7 June 1831 purchasing them from James and Rebecca Ewing.

Thomas and Diana Thornburg are shown to have had seven children. Since we are interested in daughters, they are:

Elizabeth married Robert Logan
Rebecca married William Forgy
Margaret

I haven't yet traced the family of either of the married daughters but I wouldn't be surprised if they have descendants still in the Pittsburgh area.

I forgot to say that you and my husband are related as he descends from James Piatt Sr and Mary Coleman of Monroe Co OH, too.

Re: Jacob and Elizabeth--which pair?

Let's change the subject line to reflect the message content.

My husband descends from Jacob Piatt III who died in Washington Co PA in 1784 and his wife Elizabeth Dunham? who died in the same county about 1790. We believe that Jacob III was the son of Jacob II and that Jacob II was the licensed Indian trader of the Path Valley of Pennsylvania in the 1750-1760s.

There has been absolutely no claim, suspicion, legend, in my husband's family about this Elizabeth being Shawnee. There are no expected physical characteristics evident in my husband's line or in the lines of other of Elizabeth's descendants with whom I am personally acquainted.

However, if this is the Elizabeth being asked about there is a way to find out once and for all if this Elizabeth was a "full blooded Shawnee." That solution would be to track Elizabeth's direct female descendants to present day and test one of them with a mitochondrial DNA test. If the descendant is Shawnee, so was Elizabeth--simple. If the descendant is not Shawnee, there is no way that Elizabeth could have been.

Anyone up to the challenge can begin by tracing Elizabeth's daughter Dinah who married Thomas Thornburg. This couple is buried in Allegheny Co PA. It is likely there are still descendants in the Pittsburgh area.

The mitochondrial DNA test can be run through the Piatt Y-DNA study already underway with Family Tree DNA of Houston TX. I administer the Y-DNA study and would be happy to contribute $30 to the cost of the mitochondrial test of a qualified and documented direct female descendant of Elizabeth Dunham? Piatt if the test is run through the Piatt study at FTDNA.

Mr Greene's book is full of names and suspected connections to the Shawnee, but Mr Greene himself in his foreward admits he has little time for footnotes. Therefore, where is the documentation to support the statements made?

Lacking other documentation, however, science can be applied as described above and is likely to answer the question finally.

Janet,

No, you are not a direct female descendant of Elizabeth Dunham? Piatt so the DNA test would not work. You have the mitochondrial DNA of your mother Clarice and she has the mtdna of her mother and her mother and her mother and so on. Since you have a male between you and Elizabeth, you are not in the strict line of female descendancy from her.

You miss by one generation as your mtDNA would come through Nancy Coleman and her mother and her mother and so on. Nevertheless, it would be interesting for you to have your own mtDNA tested to show your ancient origins.

Of the six daughters of Elizabeth I think the best line to trace would be the daughters of Elizabeth's daughter Dinah Piatt Thornburg. There is more written on the Thornburgs than on the families that the other daughters married into.

Your additional information on the history of Kentucky in the Civil War is appreciated and expands the knowledge of the times.

As to Wylie's wife "Leslie," that is the way that Ancestry interpreted the name which the census agent wrote poorly as "Lesta." The ink used was quite light and the copy difficult to read. However, the original image on Ancestry cited as:

Source Citation: Year: 1920;Census Place: Tiffin, Adams, Ohio; Roll: T625_1344; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 19; Image: 385, Line 10.

shows a wife Lesta, presumed to be Lestia, in the household with Wylie.

One correction to my earlier post--the one Adams Co OH branch of Piatts and the branch in Boone Co KY descend from different GRANDSONS of Rene. Both branches share a common ancestor in Rene's son Jacob I.

The Adams Co OH branch descends: Rene, Jacob I, Jacob II, etc.

The Boone Co KY branch descends: Rene, Jacob I, John, etc.

The Piatt Family Newsletter, Volume 6, 1991 gives the following information:

WYLIE HARLAN PIATT (s/o Francis Marion Piatt & Henrietta Grooms)
b 13 Jul 1874, Blue Creek, Jefferson Twp, Adams Co OH
d 20 Sep 1946, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co OH; bur Augusta KY

m 1908 to
LESTIA A PIATT (d/o Benjamin Dickey Piatt and Mary A McHarg)
b 26 Jun 1875, Adams Co OH
d 3 Nov 1854, West Union, Adams Co OH

children: PIATT
1. Harlan m Betty _____
2. Bernice m Walter Hazelbaker
3. Evelyn m Wayne Matthew Gault, who d 19 Jul 1988 in Wooster, Wayne Co OH

children of Evelyn and Wayne GAULT
1. Patricia m Jesse Thomas
2. Jonalyn Bernice m Richard Alton Smith
3. Ruth m Daniel Sterner

While most of the Piatts may descend from the immigrant Rene Piatt who died in NJ in 1705, those descendants have separated into distinct branches over the years.

The Piatts of Boone Co KY who owned slaves were not closely related to the Piatts of Adams Co OH. The separation of those branches would have occurred in the late 1600s, each descending from a separate son of Rene Piatt.

Even the Piatts of Adams Co OH were of two branches and it is yet to be determined if these two branches were distantly related. Some Adams Co Piatts think the two branches were NOT related. One branch of the Adams Co Piatts was founded by Jacob Piatt (sometimes called Jacob IV)and his brother Benjamin whose family had traveled across Pennsylvania. The other branch was founded by Revolutionary War veteran Lewis Piatt who served from Westchester Co NY. Whether Lewis descended from a third son of Rene is yet to be decided.

Wylie Piatt (a descendant of Lewis Piatt) married Lestia Piatt (a descendant of Benjamin Piatt).

In 1930 Wylie H Piatt, aged 55, was renting a place on Brush Creek Road in Tiffin Twp, Adams Co OH. Lestia, 53, was living on State Route 125 in Tiffin Twp, Adams Co OH, at the home of her brother Bennie D (Benjamin Dickey) Piatt (Jr). With her were her children Bernice E 20 and Harlan B 19. Although the original image of this census clearly shows the name to be Piatt, Ancestry has indexed all four individuals as Pratt. I am submitting corrections to Ancestry.

In 1920 Wylie S Piatt, aged 45, was renting in Tiffin Twp, Adams Co OH, and living with wife Leslie, 47, and children Bernice 10, Harlan 7, and Evelyn 3.

A note about Kentucky in the Civil War. Kentucky did not "fall to the Union." Kentucky was a slave state that remained within the Union. Known as a "border state" Kentucky supplied soldiers to both the Union and Confederate causes. The Home Guard was also mobilized for the purpose of keeping both armies out of the state.

The Piatts of Boone Co KY indeed owned slaves before the Civil War. One African American Jacob Piatt who lived in Butler Co OH after the Civil War traces his ancestry back to Boone Co KY. However, this Jacob Piatt had served in the Civil War in a unit of US Colored Troops and his pension file clearly states that he entered service as Jacob Ryal (Ryle) and was discharged as Jacob Piatt. Why he changed his name is not known. The Ryle families owned large farms in Boone Co KY and were neighbors of the Piatts there. Often, but not always, freed slave families adopted the surname of their former owners. While there are many instances of mingling of European and African blood, adoption of a surname is not a guarantee of that event.

The entire set of 12 volumes of the Piatt Family Newsletter can be found at several libraries including the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne IN, the Filson Club in Louisville KY, the National Society Sons of the Revolution Library in Louisville, and the National Society Daughters of the Revolution Library in Washington DC.
I am just searching all aspects of my family history and a distant relative pointed me to the Greene book. I'm not locked into proving anything - just curious since we know very little about my grandfather's family. Any (documented) information would be appreciated. My grandfather was born in Morgan County, Ohio and died in Noble County, Ohio in 1963. I would be glad to share any information you need.
Since my degree is in history and my emphasis was on the inception of slavery in the Americas to post Civil War, it is not something that is just casually added to the history of the area. It's just something you can find if you know how to research. But, your sarcasm has been duly noted.

I have been researching for a number of years, can't recall if I have contacted you before or not, you say you have 700 family members, if you are related to Irene Mundt or Conrad Johnson (both I beleive are deceased)then you are related to me, I provided Conrad with the details of Samuel Pyett who emigrated to Canada from Suffolk UK (where I still live, about 15 miles from his birthplace)in 1830 who became a saddlebag preacher.
I was in contact with Irene and met Conrad when he was on his visit over here a few years ago, I have a large database on Pyetts etc over here, it would be nice to have a copy of your data, perhaps a gedcom file for expanding the tree.
Kind Regards
Garry Pyett
g.pyett@btinternet.com

Wylie/Wiley Piatt is Wylie Harold Piatt. In baseball records he is listed under both names (Wiley/Wylie). He was buried in Kentucky until recently. His body was taken back to Adams Co. by relatives. You can contact Cooperstown and have them send you a pictures of him; handsome fellow. They charge about 15-20 bucks. He is listed in the BHF. Evelyn Gault's mother was his second wife. Wylie at times didn't have the best baseball career (near the end he could just not strike anyone out) though he did a wonderful job coaching. You should try talking to Evelyn, she lives in Cincinnati under the name Evelyn Stent and is in no better mood than what she's been in most her life. Evelyn doesn't like to talk about the Piatt's too much (the other Gault family members don't talk about them too much either). The Piatt's owned slaves that they ferried back and forth across the Ohio River before the Commonwealth of Kentucky fell to the Union during the Civil War. They used the slaves on their tobacco farms. Evelyn does not like this known because there are biracial Piatts' out there, so you can guess what I'm getting at... Also Wylie, after he left Evelyn's mother, took up with a black woman from Kentucky. She is the one who buried him in Kentucky after he died. There are still Piatt's buried in Stone Chapel and the graveyard has been weeded out so you can see the stones. Good luck.

Geoge and Columbia Jane Heisler lived on Tulip Road in Lynx. Back when I was a child, they called this area Greenbriar. Columbia Jane died around 1932 and George in 1945. He lived with my Grandparents, Mark Piatt and Grace (Heisler) Piatt in his latter years. I do have pictures of them.

By law, Kentucky was a slave state. Kentucky was a source of slaves for the cotton plantations in the lower South, and the slave trade was a very profitable business for many Kentuckians.

Many Kentuckians from these areas joined the Confederate army.

In 1861 and 1862, Kentucky saw a number of battles and skirmishes. By the end of 1862, after the battle of Perryville, Confederate forces retreated from the state.

When President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in January of 1863, all slaves in the Confederacy were legally set free. Because Kentucky remained in the Union, slaves in this state were not free. Lincoln declared in 1864 that any slave who enlisted in the Union army would be given freedom as well as the freedom of his family. A flood of Kentucky slaves rushed to Camp Nelson to enlist. Soon, the camp in southcentral Kentucky became a recruitment center for "coloured" troops, as well as a refugee center for their families.

The Civil War ended in 1865, and Kentucky slaves were legally freed when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was ratified soon afterward. But Confederate sentiment was still high in Kentucky after the war. The Kentucky General Assembly failed to ratify either the 13th Amendment; the 14th, which gave equal protection under the law to blacks; or the 15th, which gave African Americans the right to vote.

Evelyn Gault married about two months after her husband's death. She married a Stent.

Ruth married a Daniel Steiner unless she married Daniel Sterner before marrying Daniel Steiner.

Wylie Piatt never lived with a wife named Leslie Piatt.

Wylie left behind a biracial family in Ashland, Kentucky and they have traced the Piatt family back to biracial ancesters.
