Sue,

Have ascertained through Free BMD Marriage Index, Annie's name was:
Annie Beaton Whitworth. Whitworth was her maiden name. (See 1881 Leeds Census.)

John is on Farnworth 1881 Census, 10 yrs.old, b Prescot and 1871 Pilkington Census, 5 months old.

Marriage was within June 1895 period Index #: Oldham 8d 999

Also have John's Birth Certificate, obtained several years ago, born October 13, 1870 in Prescot.

Please contact me direct.

Helen Masters

Sue,

Re your Oct 20, 2007 ancestry message, hope this reaches you after all this time. Please check my ancestry message dated Sept. 10, 2009, and the replies. If unable, you might want to check rootsweb.

You had stated you weren't aware of your grandmother Leah Pickup's mother Annie's maiden name. Have you found it now? Has anyone in your family searched Free BMD for hers and John Pickup's marriage date? That could give a variety of possible maiden names, plus other family info.

I did a Free BMD search and found:
John Pickup and Ann LAW m Sept 1853 8e 166
John Pickup and Mary ANN FOX m Sept 1852 8e 343 Blackburn
John Pickup and Mary ANN BARNES m Sept 1852 8e 191 Haslingden

John Pickup and Ann LEE m Dec 1851 21 678 Rochdale
John Pickup and Ann FIELDING m Dec 1851 21 10 Blackburn
John Pickup and Ann THOMPSON m Dec. 1851 21 10 Blackburn
John Pickup and Ann MCTIERNAN m Mar 1851 21 95 Bolton
John Pickup and Ann GRIMSHAW m Sept 1849 21 211 Bury
John Pickup and Mary ANN Brierley m Sept. 1849 21 580 Rochdale

John Pickup and Mary ANN Spencer m Sept. 1849 21 361 Haslingden

An 1851 Census also shows:
John Pickup "son-in-law 25 yrs. b abt 1826 in Newchurch, Lancs." and,
Mary ANN "daughter (wife) 22 yrs. b abt 1829 in Newchurch, Lancs." THEY ARE LIVING WITH HER FAMILY, THE SPENCERS.

Are any of these your Annie's marriage or Census?

If you get this, I would like to contact you further please.

Helen
c/o C.
Hi Helen,
I think that you are confused about the Pickup family.
Let me try to explain:-
George Pickup married Mary Emma Hacking and had 7 children, they were John George,Robert,Mary Ellen,William,Joseph Edgar,Jemima, and Tom (not Thomas!)

John George married Jane Haworth and they had 8 children, one of whom, John Ashworth married Betty, had 2 children, John Michael and Judith Ann,and then emigrated to Canada in 1952.

Is that better ?

By the way, who are Kathy and Carolyn, and how do you all fit into the greater plan ??

Regards,
Pete.
Have you tried my e-mail address?
It is petelucas@hotmail.co.uk

Have received John George's family info from Kathy, which includes your grandfather Thomas, John George's son.

These appear to be two different families, but because they have the same name and are in the same general geological area, same generation, I suspect they might be cousins. However, all the info I have is given on my original message, so I know nothing of your grandfather Thomas unfortunately. When I check Kathy's list further, I may find something.

Helen

This is a family I'm ressearching who appears to be connected to ours which is separate from your family. This family have given names and a photo of five generations, two of them being John George and Herbert. Since this is a missing link in our family, I thought I'd try John George and Jane because I see Haworth often in records I'm searching in our family's area.

So, no known connection with my family or this other family I'm reserching, to John Ashworth, Nellie, George or Jean. Where and when were they born please? Can you give me previous generations names, birthplaces in your family?

I've just researched more of the microfilm and Pickup and Haworth are all through it, in our family's area. There may be a connection. But to go further, emailing would be best. Can you let me know where to email you. t\Thanks.

Helen Masters
c/o C. Wotherspoon

Thanks for your response to my message.

Am trying to find info on Herbert b 1901 to John George Pickup and Jane Haworth at Crawshawbooth. Great to hear you are of this family. Can you go back further in your family with birthdates, birth places, parents, etc.? I only have the info I gave on my original message and am looking for a tie-in to our, and another family.

Would be good to email you direct re more questions, info I have if possible. I'm searching "Goodshaw" microfilm and there's lots of info on it re Pickup, Haworth names. Higher Booths is also included in the Goodshaw District. Do you have any information on Herbert please?

Don't have the documents in front of me at the moment, but I may have found the parish record of John George's and Jane Haworth's child's baptism on microfilm I've been searching.

I know very little about the Pickup side of my family. My grandmother was Leah Pickup ( born Barnsley ). Apparently her parents were called John and Annie. I don`t know if she had any brothers - I think she had a sister that was killed crossing the road in Leeds. I think John and Annie lived in South Kirby, Liverpool at the beginning of the 19th C. I have found however a George Pickup on the commonwealth war graves memorial web site who was killed in WW1. His parents were called John and Annie and they came from a place in Liverpool very near to South Kirby - could it be same people ? Any help much appreciated, regards Mark S.
markstep@fsmail.net

She married William Stephenson and had 4 children with him, one of whom was my father William.

Any further information on this branch of the Pickup family would be greatly appreciated and any confirmation that the above is correct.Regards, Mark S.
markstep@fsmail.net

Aaron Pickup and Martha Crabtree

Hi -- in tracing my Neighbor family, i've come across some discrepancy about the background of Mary Pickup, who first married Jesse V. Walton and then Jacob Neighbor. Supposedly Mary was born 1823 in England to Aaron Pickup and Martha Crabtree Pickup. I can't find anything about this , although I do find Aaron and Martha Pickup in the states starting about 1840. Mary married Jesse 1845, I think.

Another opinion is that Mary was the daughter of Edmund Pickup -- again, no documentation. If anyone has records of marriages, wills, anything besides heresay that establishes either relationship (or maybe another one!), please let me know.

thanks!

Pamela Crow Baughman

I don't have any info on a Mary Lord married to a George Pickup that I have come across yet. Do you know when was this Mary Lord born?

I do have a Mary Lord born abt 1822 to George Lord and Alice Sutcliffe listed above, but have not been able to locate any info for her once George Lord and Alice show up on census with daugher and son in law John Pickup and Betty Lord. John and Betty's have children George, Mary Alice, and Jared.

Also, my George Lord was born abt 1792, but have not been able to find parents or siblings for George. Could be possible George had a sister Mary... which could be the Mary you are referring to.

George Lord and Alice Sutcliffe were married Dec 15, 1815 in Haslingden from what I have found on the IGI, but that is as far as I have gotten. Known children of George and Alice are Mary abt 1822, John Jul 11, 1822 (married Ann Nuttal), Samuel abt 1826, Betty (married to John Pickup), James abt 1830, Henry abt 1833, and William abt 1837. I am thinking since the gap between marriage in 1815 and 1st known child Mary abt 1822, there may have been some other children that had already moved out of the household prior to the 1841 census.

Elizabeth

GGG Grfr John Pickup/wife Betty (Elizabeth)

Further to message: Subject: "John Pickup/Mary Conolly", this date, found Longridge, Lancs. Parish Records show Betty mother ofimmediately above John, buried August 16, 1824 in Thornley, Longridge, age 28 years.

Longridge Parish Records show GGG Grandfather John Pickup, Betty's spouse, buried February 12, 1834 in Alston in Longridge, age 47 years.

Longridge Parish Records also show Betty gave birth to my GG Grandfather John Pickup, Baptism dated March 9, 1823, in Thornley, in Longridge. STILL WONDERING WHO RAISED GG GRANDFATHER JOHN PICKUP, AFTER THIS FATHER DIED IN 1834. GG GRANDFATHER JOHN PICKUP WAS 11 YEARS OLD.
His oldest brother found was Thomas, baptized January 17, 1818. in Thornley in Longridge.
Then came Alice, baptized on March 12, 1820 in Thornley, in Longridge.
Next, came Mary Ann, baptized March 11, 1821 in Thornley, in Longridge.
Possibly there were older children born before these who might have raised Thomas, John, Alice and Mary Ann?
Another possibility is other relatives raising them, or friends too.
Benjamin and Isabella Pickup appear in Longridge in 1834. They might have been related and may have had something to do with this family.
Does anybody know of these families or have relatives who are connected with these? Would appreciate hearing from you.

Helen Masters

Do you have any info on Mary Lord who was married to George Pickup - George b 1805 in Bacup, Lancashire, England. I have the Pickup side of this relationship (George was my husband's great great grandfather). I am looking to fill out the Lord part of the tree - wondering about siblings of Mary and their descendants.

Any help greatly appreciated.

The Mary Lord I am looking for would have been around 1805 -that is a guestimate on my part since that is the year George Pickup was born.

Let me give you a bit of my Pickup info to see if you can tie anything together.

George b 1805 had children:
Jeremiah b 1837 in Hyde m Mary Jane Traplin
George b 1829 in Hyde m Mattie ?
Frederick b. 1845 m. Sarah Leigh on May 10, 1868
Edwin b. 1848
John b. 1823
Jemimah b. 1839
Mary b. 1826
Ann b. 1831
Elizabeth b. 1833
Joseph b. 1843

I also have info on Jeremiah's siblings and descendents if you are interested.

Thanks for your reply - maybe there is still a connection to be found.

Karin
