Classification: Query
Surnames: Pietila, Pietilä, Pietilainen, Pietiläinen
Though certainly not as common a surname in English-speaking countries as Smith or Jones, Pietila/Pietilä & their variants are not that unusual in Finland.
As of today, the HisKi database of the the Genealogical Society of Finland ( http://www.genealogia.fi/hiski?en ) lists 1604 events involving a father with the Pietilä surname for christenings alone, from all areas of the country, and 503 events with the related surname Pietiläinen.
In the U.S., the Social Security Death Index, which lists deaths from approximately the early 1960s to the present, currently stands at a count of 268 Pietilas (highest numbers in Minnesota, Michigan, California, and Oregon). There are only 4 Pietilainens listed in the SSDI -- perhaps due to name changes to Pietila, as one person on this board reported.
This is at least a frequent enough occurrence of the name to mean that considerable more information than just "I have a relative whose surname is Pietila" to answer the question "Are we related?"
Whenever posting queries on this or other boards, try to include as much information as you can: What was your relative's full name? Do you know where he or she was born, married, where s/he died or was buried? Where did the family originate in Finland? When did they emigrate? What were the names of their brothers, sisters, parents, children? And so on.
The more specific you can be about who your query is about, the more other people can help you.
And the more specific you can be about what questions you need answered -- yes, that would be helpful too!
These are just some thoughts I had as I read through the queries posted on this board.
