I finally got up a GEDCOM file which includes Mikko & Hanna, who were my great-grandparents. Mikko is found at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&... -- still in progress, of course.
Mikko and Hanna had eight children:
1. George Anders PIETILA b: 19 APR 1901 in Finland, d: 11 DEC 1964 in Hibbing, St. Louis County, Minnesota
2. Urho Michael PIETILA b: 7 OCT 1902 in Wakefield, Gogebic County, Michigan, d: 16 AUG 1990 in Grand Rapids, Itasca County, Minnesota
3. Waino Petter PIETILA b: 5 MAR 1904 in Gogebic County, Michigan, d: 24 JUN 1958 in Mendocino County, California
4. Hilda Johanna PIETILA b: 1 NOV 1905 in Ironwood, Gogebic County, Michigan, d: 14 FEB 1991 in Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota
5. Elma Olivia PIETILA b: 29 JAN 1907 in Ironwood, Gogebic County, Michigan, d: 18 SEP 1993 in Hibbing, St. Louis County, Minnesota
6. Saimie Amalia PIETILA b: 6 APR 1909 in Ylivieska, Oulun lääni, Finland, d: 5 SEP 1991 in Baker City, Baker County, Oregon (my maternal grandmother)
7. Glen Benhard PIETILA b: 1 JUN 1916 in Wawina, Itasca County, Minnesota, d: 28 JUL 2000 in Deer River, Itasca County, Minnesota
8. Martha Alexandra PIETILA b: 15 MAR 1918 in Wawina, Itasca County, Minnesota, d: 17 JUL 2003 in Fort Bragg, Mendocino County, California
The story below fills in some of the details that aren't in the GEDCOM yet.
Mikko first came to the U.S. from Finland about October 1900 (as a guess), & later Hanna came to join him in October 1901 with their son Yrjö (later Anglicized to George) who was just a baby. They lived in Michigan, where Mikko probably worked in the mines in the Ironwood, Gogebic County, area, & had four more kids before they returned to Finland in about 1907 or 1908, intending to stay. They even bought a house & were trying to farm, & my grandma Saimie (after whom I have my middle name Saima) was born in Ylivieska in April 1909. But money was still short, so in October 1909 Mikko returned to the U.S. to earn money & send it back, with the plan that he would return in a couple of years. He shows up in the 1910 census in Ironwood, Gogebic County, Michigan, working in an iron mine. But for some reason his stay lengthened.
Then World War I broke out, & he was worried. (Finland was then a Grand Duchy of the Russian empire, which was on one side in that war.) So, he wrote to Hanna & told her to sell everything & pack up & come back to the U.S. So she did, and sailed with the children, plus her son Niilo HEUSALA from her first marriage & a niece, from Oslo in July 1915, just a couple of months after the Germans had sunk the Lusitania. And then was reunited with Mikko for the first time in nearly 6 years. They got a farm in Wawina, Itasca County, Minnesota, and then they had a couple more kids.
The biggest questions still outstanding have to do with Mikko's family of origin in Finland, and also with Hanna's relatives from her first marriage to Niilo HEUSALA.
