John J. was born, 30 Oct 1884, to Nels J. and Hilda (Luukas) Pietila, b. 1845 and 1847 Northern Finland, respectively. Nels and Hilda came to the US in 1870. Nels was a miner and logger at Delaware, Michigan. In 1882, he located to Lead, South Dakota, where he served as minister of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church. Hilda died 26 Aug 1916, Lead, South Dakota. They had five children.
John J. was educated in Lead, SD, until age 16, then was employed in mills, mines, and stores for 3 years. In 1903, age 19, he located to work in the mines in Jardine, MT, then to the mines in Butte, MT, until 1907. Went back to Lead, SD, where he was employed in various stores. In 1911, he moved to Butte, MT, & was in the mercantile business for six months; moved on to Red Lodge, MT, where he managed a Cooperative Mercantile Association for three years; and one year in Washoe Trading Company; returned to Red Lodge, MT, as manager of a mercantile business and then bought into The Robert Elevator Company.
On 26 Jul 1910, Deadwood, SD, John married Miss Mary Tampani, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Eric Tampani. Her mother was still living in Haparanda, Sweden, and her father was a Swedish farmer. Adopted son of John & Mary: George Tayry, b. 16 Aug 1916, Butte, MT (adopted 1 Feb 1920).
