Hi Pinckney Researcher,

What year was you grandfather born and what were his parents names? If you know your great grandparents names, you should be able to find them in the "Federal Census" files. That's where you'll find you grandfather living as a child. You need the same information for your grandmother.

My ancestral "Pinckney" family comes from Beaufort & Charleston, counties of SC. There were many free blacks during the slavery period. I'll send you a few sites that lists "Free Black Families from SC".

You need names and dates to get started. Go back as far as you can..1880, 1890, etc... Ask the elder members of your family questions about your history. (Bibles, old photo books, marriage licenses..etc are a great help.)

Good Luck
Senora M Amos
Pinckney Family Researcher

I can provide tons of detail on the descendants of Joseph Pinkney/Pinckney and Mary Dearin if you want them to add to your project. My main research has been on the family of Joshua B. Pinckney and his wife Hannah Ambrose Mills. One of their sons was married to the youngest sister of one of my GG Grandfathers.

Pinckney From SC to NY after WWII

My grandfather, Harmon Pinckney- who dropped the "c", was born in SC where he married a Mary Robinson who was part Native. After the war my grandfather relocated to BKLYN, NY with my grandmother. Their children were named as follows: Shirley, Daisy, Robin, Priscilla, Al, Arthur, Joseph, Harmon, Victor. Fraternal twins run in the family- if that matters. And I was told we are relatives of the Pinkney Drifter who passed.
My mother once told me her dad told her many times that "we were not slaves!" "We were educators, teachers, and students." Does anyone have information about this line of Black Pinckney's and the Plantation owners? Thanks!!

Black "Pinckney Families" of South Carolina

I have been researching my family roots for more than seven (7) years. I have been trying desperately to find out information about my grandfather Elias Pinckney Sr. He was born in South Carolina in 1904. He had an older brother by the name of William Hezekiah Pinckney, born in 1899/1900. I also heard there may have been a couple sisters, Shirley and Ruth (not sure though). Both brothers moved to Philadelphia, PA during the late 1920’s. I would like to know who their parents were. There are so many Pinckney’s in South Carolina, you have to know at least one of the parents, in order to follow the correct Pinckney family line. I have been told that their mother’s name was “Wilhelmina” (Both brothers have a daughter with that name). I need this information the help complete my family tree. My family tree can be found on Ancestry.com: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=6534158

Information about my grandparents:
Elias Pinckney Sr. married my grandmother Essie Green, also from South Carolina. They had three children:
Wilhelmina Rebecca Pinckney – 192* (my mother) – Living in Philadelphia
Frances Eastermae Pinckney – 192* (my aunt) – Living in Philadelphia
Elias Pinckney Jr. – 1930 (my uncle) – Passed away in 1998 – San Francisco CA

This is what I know about my great uncle William:
William H Pinckney married a Julia, I don’t know her maiden name. They had three daughters ( I think)
Wilhelmina Pinckney - 1917 – Born SC
Helen Pinckney - 1926/27 – Philadelphia, PA
Elouise Pinckney - 1916 – Born SC

My mother told me that William and his family lived on Colorado Street in South Philadelphia. My grandmother “Essie” passed away in 1968, and I remember the names Julia and Wilhelmina Pinckney in the obituary book. I have Pinckney aunts, uncles, and cousins living throughout Philadelphia and South Carolina, but I know absolutely nothing about them. I remember a Pinckney cousin of mine from South Philadelphia was killed in action in Vietnam, (He looked exactly like my Uncle Elias Jr.) During the late 60’s to early 70’s a cousin whose was nickname Pookie use to visit us quite often. I heard she suffered from a stroke a few years ago.

If any of these names seems familiar to you, please contact me. My cousins from "Philadelphia, Pa", who maybe related to Uncle William & Aunt Julia, please contact me. I don't want anything, just a bit of our ancestral history. Hoping to hear from some distant cousin.

Sincerely,
Senora M Amos

I was wondering if you have the children of Elijah Pinckney and Polly Lyon? My G G Grandmother was Permelia Pinckney born about 1803, believed to be in NY. She married John Allen also originally from NY. She died 27 Dec 1886 and is buried in Markham Cemetery, Delhi Twp, Ingham Co, MI. I am told Elijah had about 9 children, but I can only find 3. Elijah, Gilbert & Permelia. Thanks for anything you might find. I read your NY Pinckney family pt 1 and pt 2. Reva

Ezekiel Pinckney

The following is an except from some papers that I received several years ago from my mother. She was a Pinckney. It was supposedly compiled by a relative. I have been trying to put it in some sort of order.
the following reads " sometime in the early 18th century,(probably abt. 1725) three brothers came from England: William, Charles, and Jonathon. They settled first in N.Y.. I have knowledge of William having 2 sons. Ezekiel, born abt.1730 and Thomas born abt. 1732. Ezekiel had a son named John, who had 2 daughters, Emily & Susan. One (doesn't say which) married a Mr.Vermilya the other Mr. Lawson. The mother of these 2 girls died and John married again (no name) and this wife gave birth to a son Joseph. She died when Joseph was only 12 days old- This Joseph pinckney was born 9 Dec. 1795."
The article goes on to say that Joseph was raised by Ezeliel, his grandfather, and no mention as to what happened to John. This Joseph Pinckney died June 16 1871, and is buried in the Moon Cemetary, in Macksburg, Iowa.
This is a direct descendent of mine, but would like to get more info on Charles and Jonathon. Can e-mail me at shargould@yahoo.com

I am researching the father of Daniel Jarvis Pinckney, born Ulysses, Tompkins Co. New York. I found only one Pinckney in that county, a William Pinckney living there in 1820, 1830 & 1840 census. Listed next to him on census(neighbor) during those years is Stephen Jarvis. Found marriage between William Piinckney and Mahala Jarvis. Several of the descendants of this family members over the years with the names Coteworth, Mahala and Jarvis. Would anyone have information on this family? Family lore is that Danile J. Pinckney was related to the famous Charles Cotesworth Pinckney.

No Bellinger info.
"Founding Mothers, by Cokie Roberts, 2004, Perennial...HarperCollins Publishers
pg. 5 "...in 1744...
pg. 6 "...the Lucas family...Eliza's friend & protector, Mrs. Pickney died...A few months after his wife's death, Charles proposed to Eliza..He was forty-five, she was twenty-two...
children... Charles Coteswoth came along in 1746. Then George Lucas was born in 1747 but died
pg. 7 soon after, the same year that his namesake, Eliza's father, was killed in battle. Then came Harriott in 1749 & Thomas in 1750...." interesting lady-indigo dye, looms...clothes...silk...
pg 8 "...move to England..1758...go home...
pg. 9...in South Carolina..Charles quickly contracted malaria & died...
pg. 10...(about her letter to children/fathers death)...
Taking up the cause of his fellow colonists, young Thomas Pinckney earned the nickname "The Little Rebel"
A good read for genie people!

Re: Cotesworth Pinckney

This is not the answer you probably want but in
"Founding Mothers" by Cokie Roberts c2004, cover Perennial, front pages; "For information address HarperCollins Publishers...N.Y., N.Y.
pg. 1 "...George Lucas brought his English wife & daughters to South Carolina in 1734...Lucas left...war against Spain...leaving his sixteen-year-old daughter in charge of all properies,...mother...toddler...Wappoo Plantation...
pg. 4...Charles Pinckney, a prominent South Carolina lawyer...
pg. 6 ...A few months after his wife's death, Charles(Pinckney 45 yr) proposed to Eliza(Lucas,22 yrs)...Pinckney, a man of means & speaker of the South Carolina Assembly...he made it clear that no dowry was necessary, he seemed readily to accept the indigo project along with his bride.
And finally Eliza's scheme paid off. By 1747 there was enough indigo to ship to England as a substantial export...children as well. The first, Charles Cotesworth came along in 1746. Then George Lucas was born in 1747...
pg.7 Harriott in 1749 & Thomas in 1750...family moved to England...Eliza Lucas Pinckney...
pg. 11 Key players in the move to independence & the war that followed would be Charles Cotesworth Pinckney & Thomas Pinckney. Playing important roles on the home front would be their mother & sister, Eliza Lucas Pinckney & Harriott Pinchney Horry....
pg. 112 "...Thomas returned to his unit, & his wife, Elizabeth, went home to join her sisters & their mother, Rebecca Motte. (they had a baby)
pg. 113 ...Charles Cotesworth Pinckney was married to Sarah Middleton, sister of a signer of the Declaration of Independence & daughter of a president of the Continental Congress. Thomas's wife, Elizabeth Motte, was the daughter of one of the great heroines of the Revolution, Rebecca Motte."
not my family-there is more info on Eliza's indigo project
I guess the Cotesworth name comes from an earlier generation...
As to the Pinckney name and france the pinckneys did go from France and the spelling was different to England then to USA it is in england and here that the name was spelled Pinckney. Many slaves did take the pinckney name many changed the spelling to Pinkney this is why there are the 2 spellings.

NY PINCKNEY family, pt.1

I am working on a project for our local genealogy society. And in doing so go off on tangents of trying to find out who everybody is, not just the direct line. Anyway, the following (in two parts - because of space I have not included all the generations I have, or notes, which are only a few in some of the families) is from several databases on WorldConnect. I would appreciate any additions or corrections. The focus is the male lines, however I am also interested in the spouses and in-laws of the females also. This info will go into a file at our local library when the project is finished. An interesting thing I discovered is that I am probably related to the family back in France in the 900s. Thank you for any help. Jim.

Generation One

1.
Pinckney name given to all children of African descent

Pickney- Child, children, kids.
I guess you can say the "N" (The End) does not make a difference if you do not know the beginning. The first line is a copy and paste from a glossary of the Jamician language of Patois. The slaveholders of Charleston SC did not only give their slaves the name of "Pinckney" as mine surname is spelled or "Pickney" as yours; but their family's business placed the name of Pinckney on all the potential inventory from the shores of Africa thru the Carribean to the shores of South Carolina. Pinckney is a conjuntion of two words "pink" and "knee". We all know that the average age of the slaves brought to America was that of children and that they were carried by wooden ships which required alot of swabbing. This would mean that the men on these ship would most likely be on there knees in the rough seas so by the time they got to a shore to get their PRECIOUS cargo the blood showing thru their skin looked pink to mothers and fathers watching there children playing in the surf. So when the parents said Pinckney/Pinkney/pink knees the children were expect to come running. The etomolgy of a word is not hard to understand if you study the era in which the word originated. The majority of the slaves sold in America were sold in Charleston SC, the prominent family in Charleston were slaveholders with the last name of Pinckney, Pinckney is the name used to this day in Jamica. I have even heard some to say in Ethiopian children are called Pinckneys. I hope one day to meet a true Pinckney that still has some of the sales' receipts and would be willing to allow us to get closer to our roots. Do you think the word "pickanenny" could be Pinckney in another dialect?

Jim, I am researching my gg-grandfather who was a Pinckney and was born in Westchester county in 1820. In doing so I started a family tree of the Pinckneys trying to find a connection. In my tree I tried to make the connections when known, if I could not find it I added the family anyways without the linkage. I did not however add my sources but it is mostly from the same sources you have listed plus my own research using the census records as well as newspapers obits. If you are interested in a copy l would be glad to share it with you.

My Grandfather Marion (Boilie) Pinckney was from SC, Rembert. This was the story that he told us. Our slave masters allowed us to take their name. Some free slaves spelled the name Pinckney and some spelled the name Pinkney. Both are related. Bpinckney2@comcast.net

I have taken note of the different spellings of the last name. Living in Georgia, I always thought the last name was unique since I had not met another person with the same last name. It was not until I was 18 when a customer at my place of employement asked me if I was from or have relatives in South Carolina because it is a common name there. I do not know if I do, but I would like to find out if I am related to anybody in South Carolina. My grandparents, who are both deceased, were Willie Lee and Elizabeth Pinckney. A couple of years ago, I met a Paula Pinckney in Atlanta, and her father and family is from Richmond, Virginia. We are not related, but it was nice meeting her.

New DNA Results are in!

You can view the new DNA results here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/binkley/ (Click on Y Results).

In group 1, kit 71739 has upgraded to 37 markers with results due any day now. In group 2, kit 78682 has upgraded to 37 with results due in 6-8 weeks. I have not asked the 3rd group, John Binkley of NC to upgrade to 37, as there is no reason to do so, until they start getting matches.

Two new kits are coming due. Both believe that they do not match the Swiss Binkleys. One kit will start having results trickle in late this week or early next week and the other kit will be back in 6-8 weeks.

Group 1 is getting a little closer to splitting apart, but will still need more DNA participants in order for me to do this.

If you are interested in DNA and how it can help you, feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Cheri Mello
Binkley/Pinkley DNA Admin.

DNA Study

Hello Members,

My name is Cheri Mello and I took over the Binkley/Pinkley DNA study with FamilyTree DNA. I've been involved in various DNA studies for the past 2.5 years. I'm a co-administrator of one study, sole administrator of two others, and am part of a DNA committee at my local genealogy society. I chose FamilyTreeDNA as the testing company as I like the tools they provide the administrators (me) to help manage the project (your DNA results).

You can find out more information here (how to join, cost, etc):
https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=D26491&...
(You can also access it from the main page at: www.ftdna.com and type in Pinckney, Binkley or Pinkley or any other allied surname in the search box).

Also, FamilyTree DNA has started their Holiday sale early. The Y-DNA 37 marker test is $30 off and the Y-DNA 25 marker is $15 off. You must order via the invoice method by Dec. 31st.

Email me with any questions. I am on the message board and the list. Thanks!

Sincerely,
Cheri Mello
Binkley/Pinkley DNA Admin
3G: Cynthia Pinkley (18teens - c. 1844)
Possibly the dau. of George Pinkley (maybe Benj.

I have been researching Pinckneys for a few years and have info about the Coatsworth/Pinckney connection. The 1st Pinckney married a Coatesworth and the names Charles, William, and HENRY ARE REPEATED EVERY GENERATION. The families for app. 4 generations would all name their sons after uncles and brothers AND cousins. It is very confusing at 1st. To get them separated I looked in History books because the Charles' were cousins, uncles, & brothers in S.C. politics. I have a 7 generation tree on my side of family and never did find a connection to the S.C. branch. Also noted that 1 generation of Charles Coatsworth Pinckney did not marry and had no Children. When researching always double ck. birth dates AND deaths. Also, one family sorta left the clan, went out on their own and dropped the c and became Pinkney. Good Luck. Finding the info is half the fun.
