Hi
My father is Philip Alan Pines. His father was also Philip Pines, and his father before him was Michael Pine. Michael and his wife Ellen Doyle came from Ireland in the second half of the 19th century. They were both born 1844. They setled in Orange Co. NY, about 60 miles north of NYC. Does any of this sound familiar?

I have seen the postings on Levina Lee Rex, Patrick Nolan, and Martha Ellen Lee. I am the gg grandson of David Rex. We must be family. I too have heard family lore about how Robert E. Lee had picked Martha Ellen up and put her on his lap. I have heard many other Oklahoma stories besides. I am currently trying to research family history but have not gotten far. As a kid my father's family used to drive to Prague, OK for vacation. A city boy, he has fond memories of his time there.

Have you gotten any farther in your research? I would like to talk with you. I have your number from the postings and will try again soon.

Martha Ellen Lee Pines Rex and David Rex were my grea great grandparents also. I have old pictures of them. Lots of info of their lifetimes. However, have not been able to verify name of her parents but have a fairly good idea. Have copies of Martha's marriage bonds to James Pines, David Rex.

Let me hear from you soon.
I read your correspondance on Reuben and Robert E. Lee. I have a Reuben Lee. His son, Solomon Lee, fought in the Civil War for the north, and settled in Tennessee. In his application for a pension for fighting in the war, he states that his father, Reuben Lee, was a cousin or second cousin to Robert E. Lee.

I am stuck with Reuben and Solomon. I am not sure I believe they are related to Robert E. Lee, as I believe both Solomon and Reuben were born in Vermont.

Please let me know of any further information on your Reuben Lee, to take a chance they may be the same.

Martha and Sue...I think my Reuben is not the same as yours. Reuben was born about 1800, in Vermont according to most census records, one states NY. He married Polly or Mary, born about 1796 in Vermont. Their children were: Henry (abt 34), Solomon (1838, my ancestor), Ephrium (abt 1831). Could be more. I think he has a brother named Daniel, maybe Andrew also. They tend to travel together. They all married into Spees family. I also think Solomon and Daniel stayed in the western NY area, and Andrew moved on to Wisconsin.

I can pass more on as I dig it out. I am in the process of getting better organized.

Dear Sue Bleakley,
This has to be the same family. My great grandmother Catherine Rex Carson had 3 half brothers: Lewis, George, Andrew. They were all born in Kentucky. Their father was James Pines and their mother was Martha Ellen Lee. I was at Martha's gravesite yesterday. She is buried in Lincoln County, OK in the old Arlington cemetary. Her husband James, whom she married Sept. 24th, 1846, in Campbell Couonty,KY, died and she remarried a David Rex. I haven't found their marrige certificate yet but they are in the 1860 Indiana Census in Decateur County. And Lewis, George, Andrew Pines are in the household with them. My ggreatmother was 5 months old. She had six sons and one was named Andrew and one was named George.
Our family legend included a Reubin Lee also and at the present time I am trying to find out who Martha Ellen Lee Pines Rex father's name was. Any info would be appreciated. And the pictures would be wonderful. I too will share what I have. I guess we are cousins through George Pines mother, Martha, my great great grandmother. I am positive of my information.
My address is 1795 E. 57th St.Tulsa,OK74135
phone (918) 748-9263

Dear Sue,
To answer some of your questions: no, I don't know what James Pines died of. And for the childlessness, from great grandmother's side only her daughter Martha Ellen, did not have children.
Am going to send info received from you to geneologist as she is going to Campbell County,KY on Thursday.
My e-mail address is: memamarty@aol.com.
I am very anxious to speak with you. I'm an RN, off work today, so have had time to reply to you. I have six sisters, ranging in age from 59 to 45. Just spoke with one in Scottsdale, AZ and she is so excited about finding you.
You are right, Catherine and Lavina lived in Prague, OK. That is where my sister and I were yesterday, visiting the hoistorical society. They came for the Okla Land Run, probably in 1891. Their parents came also so all three of them had farms in the area. Everyone in Prague knows where the old Carson (Catherine), Noland (Aunt Vinie), and Rex farms were.
Bet you are in Missouri. I have a son in Springfield. LET'S TALK!!!!!

Dear Al,
Maybe, with your help, our family can solve the century plus old mystery of Reuben Lee.
The mystery begins in 1828 when my great great grandmother, Martha Ellen Lee, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. When she was 18 she had moved across the Ohio River to Campbell County, KY and from that time on I know about her until her death in Lincoln County, OK early in the 20th century. The only information I have about her parents is from the US census where she states her father was born in Mass. and her mother was born in Ohio.
I grew up hearing stories from her granddaughter, Mary Agnes, my grandmother, about how she was related to Robert E. Lee through Reuben Lee. Your reply is the closest we've come to solving the mystery so I am very anxious to hear from you. So please reply asap and tell us what you know about Reuben and Solomon Lee. As Sue wrote in her message, we are probably related, as was the case with Sue and me.

Martha
Lewis Pines was my gguncle. My ggrandfather was George Pines. My line of descent is George pines-Martha Elizabeth (Bessie)who was Lewis' sister,Mary Jean Beiswinger-me.I,too have been trying to figure out Martha's father's given name.Family lore has it that his name was Reuben but I have been unable to prove or disprove that.I have very little information on that side of the family and would be grateful for anything that you have.In return I have a bunch of old photos of the pines family that I would gladly copy for you.
Sue Bleakley

Martha
Oops! Right family, wrong Lewis.Lewis would have really been my ggguncle. I don't think I have any pictures of him.I'll take a look.Until 10 minutes ago I didn't even know he existed so he might be one of the unknowns in some of my pictures.
sue

Martha
This is indeed the same family.I have letters from my grandmother talking about her grandmother marrying a man named Rex and mentioning her aunt Vina and Aunt Kate (your ancestor).I will send you a copy.I was surprised to hear that Martha was buried in OK. I thought she had died in either Missouri or Kentucky.I was also surprised to see you write Ellen as her middle name. I was always told that my grandma (Martha Elizabeth) was named after her grandmother. Is that on her tombstone? What kind of records do you have of this.Everything passed down from my grandmother has her as Martha Elizabeth.Of course, there were no offical records, just her handwritten records. This might explain why I have been having so much trouble finding her.
Once again, thanks. This is the first contact I have been able to make on this side of the family. Most of my grandmother's and grandfather's siblings as well as their aunt and uncles were childless (a mystery I'm also looking into), so there aren't alot of people out there looking for them.
sue

Al
Thank you for your response.I forwarded it on to Marty (the other woman in the conversation). This is the first time someone outside the family has corraborated the story.Even if it turns out that we aren't related to Robt E, I think we may be related to you. Our Reuben was supposedly born in Massachusettes which is in the same neighborhood.
How are you related to this Reuben? My line runs from his daughter Martha Ellen Lee.
sue

Thanks for the information. I'm going to pass it along to the Arner master genealogists. If you are a descendant, we heartily welcome you into the world of Arner/Orner cyber-cousins and hope you can make our national gathering in August.

Delilah P. Pines and Theodore Porter Orner (1839-1920); Perry and Blair Co., PA

The Arner Family Association seeks descendants of:

DELILAH P. PINES, Theodore Porter Orner, 1839-1920, Liverpool, Perry; Altoona, Blair, PA.

You are almost certainly descendants of Hans Ulrich Arner and Verena Eberhard, 1735 immigrants from Switzerland to Philadelphia. Join us for an August 24-25, 2002 gathering in beautiful Lehigh County, Pennsylvania (1 hour north of Philadelphia). For “reunion” information or to see where you fit into the *rner family, visit Joe Erner’s website at www.geocities.com/~erner/gen/arner which documents the Arner/Aner family to the 1500s, or contact us through the Arner Listserv at ARNER-L@rootsweb.com. We’re planning two fun-filled days including a catered Pennsylvania Dutch luncheon and the dedication of a memorial stone in the Heidelberg Union Church cemetery to honor the immigrants. Help us widen our circle of cyber-cousins and plan to attend. We welcome you.
