Hi I saw you post about a book on the Pinkerton's. How much info would you need to see if they are in the book? Also where would I get a copy of the book, should my line be in the book. Please reply to "suunsu@gmail.com.

Rich Blondin

John Pinkerton to America 1790

My ancestor John Pinkerton came to South Carolina in 1791.
He had 13 Children. In 1814 he moved to Preble Co. Ohio.
That is where he lived out his life, as did several of his children. Then in 1849 three of the sons left OH and moved onto Peoria Co. IL. I have had my lineage done for years, and I will be glad to share what interests you may have on this lineage.

Ok come on guys.. Enough is enough.. if you have info to share this is the place for that.. but if you want to carry on freedom of information discussions... perhaps emailing each other is a better place to do that. As of this morning there are 101,000+ entries in the public family trees section of 'Ancestry' that refer to pinkertons. All available for a small membership. All of these opinions back and forth are being copied to thousands of others from this board. Lets keep it relavant please. Thanks from all of us out here.

I agree, but only if you know your line is in it first. It would be a shame for someone to buy the book and find out that they aren't related to anyone in it (though from what I've heard, all Pinkertons in the U.S. are supposedly related at some point).
Correct.

I want to also mention here that the price seems steep, but this is a research book that took a lot of work and with an extremely limited audience. Furthermore, for me, it's a small price to pay for something that is not only focused on my lineage but also which can immediately become an heirloom. Give it as a gift and it becomes a bit of a family treasure, to be passed down. $92 isn't a lot for a gift. It may seen like a huge bunch of money for "just a book" but his wouldn't be just a book to me.

I think the price is more than far for an object like this!
I appreciate all the info. I do also appreciate the fact that the authors put a lot of time, effort and money into compiling the book, and do not want to see large reproductions of the info on the internet. I can understand that. In my opinion, with my limited knowledge of the law, it is similar to a book author not allowing an entire chapter of their book to be posted on the internet, but discussions of the book are perfectly legal.
Check out my previous post. The information contained in the book is not copyrighted. Also read the wikipedia.com entry for "fair use" as it explains this better than I ever could.

The Copyright that the book holds protects the author from someone else from copying the book and selling the authors' work for a profit. This includes paraphrasing the book, or using the same information to come to the same conclusions via the same methods.

The information in the book, and most any book, are facts. Facts can not be copyrighted. You are free to share those facts.

There are copyrighted books of American history, for instance.
I don't feel that you were bullying me, and I certainly know that was not your intent. I'm just wondering how information that is public record can be copyrighted? Some of that information is in my own family history files, information that I had long before the book was published. Am I now not allowed to share that information because it also happens to be contained in a book that is copyrighted?

I am sorry if it seemed like I was "bullying" anyone I wasnt. And there is a second book as the first book is no longer in print. The second book is called "Pinkerton Descendants Through the Ages Volume Ages: Unlocking the Past (Second Edition). The reason for me and my co-author not wanting anyone to pass out information from this book is because it took us over 8 (eight) years to comply this book. Plus we have been burned by other people. We have paid for sites and memberships to get our information. This book has alot more information and pictures than the first therefore it's cost it is a bit higher. It's total cost with shipping is $92.50. We also have to pay for the books so dont think that we get off not paying for them to.

If you have any questions about people you can contact me.
pluto_8993@yahoo.com
Lori

Hello everyone! I'm a Pinkerton descendant and I have a book on the Pinkerton family, descendants of Richard Pinkerton Sr., born in Northern Ireland in 1740. I would be very happy to try to find any Pinkertons in this book for anyone who asks. However, the book unfortunately does not have an index, so I would need some helpful information such as birthdates, parents' names, etc. Basically as much information as possible would help me narrow down the search. Otherwise I would have to start at the beginning of the book and it has 670 pages of info!

Still, I'm happy to search even if you only have a name. It just might take me awhile. Anyone who is interested, let me know!

Thank you for all of the information. This person is a cousin who I have also been personal friends with for many years, so I really don't think they are trying to "bully" me at all. Perhaps they are just unfamiliar with the law?

In any case, the book is called Pinkerton Descendants Through the Ages: Volume One: Unlocking the Past. It was "researched, compiled and transcribed by Lori L. Brandenburg and Trudi L. Nichols". As I do want to support their efforts in compiling all this information, I would encourage anyone who is interested to purchase the book.

My husband is related through Wiley Estes older brother James Madison b. 1813. This branch left IL for Iowa then Kansas so don't see them on many of charts. Do you know anything about younger brother Andrew J b.1823 who married Martha Hudson? Found them on 1850 census with 3 boys but can't find anything after that.

I looked for Raymond Pinkerton on 1920 census for Hazen, Prairie, AR and found one listed as 6 years old living with Fred and Alma R Rounsavall. Listed as stepson. Alma was born about 1892 in AR. Did not find a William Pinkerton in 1910. If state, AR, or birth date other than about 1890 would have missed him.

Hello out there, I'm trying to find any information on William Pinkerton who was born April 1862 in Ohio. According to the 1900 census, he was in the Ohio Penitentiary while his two small children were in foster care. By 1910, the three of them were reunited. I don't know what William's wife's name was- just that they were divorced. I don't know his parents names other than that his mother was born in Virginia. William's children were Charles Edward and Annie O.

Shirl, Ancestry.com has his wife's name listed as Orpha Brown. He filled out a WW I draft registration in Fayette County, Alabama that states his birth date was March 31, 1881, that he was a farmer, had blue eyes, light hair, and had lung trouble. His wife's name is listed as Orpha. His name is written "Charles William Pinkerton" on the form. He did sign his name. I also found a death record of a Charley Pinkerton in March, 1925 in Fayette County, Alabama.
I didn't find Orpha Pinkerton in either the 1930 or 1920 Ccensus, but hope this is of some help.
Margie

(Pardon the length and the ---------- marks. Apparently, Rootsweb does not believe in the concept of paragraphs.
------------
First of all, could you share the name and author of this book so that others of us may purchase it?
-------------
The author is trying to bully you, and/or has a very basic misunderstanding about the nature of books, facts, and copyright.
-------------
Information contained in a book can easily be shared between people. Sure, you can't *reproduce* the book, even in part if your reasons are not sound. So you must not just paste large swaths of text. You can, without breaking copyright, pass on any information contained in any book to any person. You can even quote information. Books are a *reference*.
-------------
It's called "fair use" and I encourage you to read up on what it means. Here is the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use
-------------
Furthermore, this is a book of history, containing facts. From the Fair Use Wikipedia page:
-------------
"To prevent the private ownership of work that rightfully belongs in the public domain, facts and ideas are separate from copyright - only their particular expression or fixation merits such protection."
-------------
Given that the contents of the book are facts, you may answer any question posed to you in any format, provided that you answer in your own words. You are also permitted to quote the book's facts, provided that you cite the book as a reference - just as I have clearly quoted and cited the Wikipedia as a reference to support my thesis. You simply may not copy a book, or publish your own book that comes to the same conclusion using the same facts in the same manner.
-------------
Finally, not only are these facts that are part of the public domain, they are *our shared family history*. For one person, Pinkerton or not, to claim ownership of these facts about *your family* is beyond asinine.
-------------
Don't cave in to bullies/ignoramuses who try to take your rights away from you. We Pinkertons, given our connection to the Detective Agency and its history, should know all about this kind of thing ;)
-------------
-Rocky, of the Plainview TX/Bakersfield CA Pinkertons

Was hoping someone could help me with the death date and place of William Charlie Pinkerton. He was born Mar 31, 1881 in Alabama I think. He married Opha unknown abt 1904 in Alabama. His wife and children were living in Oklahoma around Shawnee area in the 1920's. The last census I have found was in 1910: Precinct 1, Fayette, Alabama. His children were Fletcher L, Lester Paul, and Charles Pinkerton. William Charlie Pinkerton's parents were James William Pinkerton died in 1930 in Fayette, Alabama and Francis Narcisa Newman died in 1927 in Fayette, Alabama. If you can help please email me or reply.
Thanks,
Shirl
impossible_kat@yahoo.com
