My father told me his grandfather came from Hilton Head area, I assume Pinckney Island. He stated his grandfather Talmage Pinkney and his brothers were children of their slave owner. The two brother left the area maybe not SC after the civil war and PASSED for white and my gggrandfather went to Maryland. Although he could have passed he chose not to and stated he would take the "C" out of Pinkney so they could know his family. Has anyone heard of any stories of that? This is truly a sad story, but one never knows what it's like for suvival.
