Your Rev Thomas Pirtle was the Lincoln's preacher and made a note in his diary "last night a baby boy was born at the Lincoln cabin" it was Abe! Abe's mother also lived with a Pirtle family before her marriage. Her name was Nancy Hanks I found her on a KY census. I have the book the lawyers of Major John Barbee Pirtle's attorneys wrote after he died without a will they had to find his heirs for 8 generations back and forward to distribute the sizable estate. Family of John And Amelia Fitzpatrick Pirtle, The (Major John B. Pirtle paternal heirs through 01/19/1935), by Henry M. Johnson, Esquire & Henry J. Tilford Esquire, Louisville, KY 1936 Printed by Gibb-Inman Co., Inc., Louisville, KY. Copy in my file, One of the witnesses on the deed was Mordecai Lincoln an older brother of Thomas
Page 10 gives his DOB 10 NOV 1772 and DOD 29 MAR 1826 but pafe 17 has DOB as NOV 14, 1772.

Also see my web site www.pirtle.us and join the Pirtle DNA Project at www.familytreedna.com

Hi, Terry ....
(1) SEE FOLLOWING WHICH YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN ..... http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/PIRTLE/2002-12/1040...

(2) My James Harvey Pirtle's father was David Pirtle and his father was Nathaniel Pirkle or Purtell (see below census figures from 1880 and 1850, which you may have already seen). It looks like perhaps my David and your James were brothers with Nathaniel being their father. I know that several of my relatives are named James and David, in fact I have a brother, James, and a brother with the middle name of David.

(3) James Harvey Pirtle, b. 1871
David Pirtle, b. 1847
Nathaniel Pirkle/Purtell, b. abt 1780
John Jacob Berkel/Pirtle Jr, b. 1734

There is a lot of information on the Berkel/Purtell/Pirtle name on the internet. I have scads myself from there and other sources. If you want more, let me know. I could bore you to death, I'm sure. And there are many different Pirtle lines leading from the first Pirtle immigrants arriving in the US many years ago. Your line and mine may not be related. I hope I've helped in some small way.

From 1880 Census, Pike, Stoddard County, Missouri; FHL Film 1254737, National Archives Film T9-07737, Page 547C

David E.
If you are a Pirtle and are interested we have a Pirtle DNA Project started at www.familytreedna.com to see if we are all related by blood. The starter kit is $129 and the Male DNA test for paternal, maternal, Native American and early orgins is $129. If you pay though the project it is $100 - So far we have three people signed up. My brother and I will make 5 when we return our kits.
Thanks for the info. I seen the census records for Nathaniel Pirtle (spelled Purtell) before. I really believe my James Pirtle and your Nathaniel are brothers..James and family was also in that 1850 census for Stoddard co. Mo. I have his birth abt. 1819 and besides his children listed is a Nancy Kelly ,which is Mary "Polly" sister. I have a hard time believing Henry and Sarah (Jones)Pirtle is James Parents just because I can't find anything linking him to the Kentucky area.I know they spent time in Missouri,Arkansas, and Illinois. The 1860 census for Union co.IL.has them listed along with Nancy Kelley. Can't figure out where James went after that? He is not buried in the family plot in Alto Pass cemetery(IL.)I read where one Pirtle guy was a riverboat captain and would transport his family all around the U.S.Maybe this would explain why my Pirtle's traveled so much?? If you have any thoughts to whom Nathaniel's parents may be I would like to hear it. Thanks so much.
Mary,
I think if im not mistaken that James Harvey's father was a Nathaniel Pirtle? The reason I ask is that my gr-gr- grandfather James Monroe Pirtle lived near them in the 1850 Stoddard co. Mo. census{spelled Purtell). I know Nathaniel and James M. must be related but not sure how? James M. and Mary"Polly"{Kelley)Pirtle traveled to Arkansas abt.1851-58 then ended up in southern Illinois(Union co.)in 1860 census. Shortly after 1860 no records can be found for James but Mary Pirtle lived in Union with her 9 children till her death July 23, 1907. If you know a connection of these 2 men or who Nathaniel's parents would be.. it could help me greatly, Thanks Terry

Mo.William was a broom maker and blind according to a census record from Union co IL. His parents were James Monroe Pirtle b. Abt. 1819 TN. and Mary Polly Kelley b.April 07, 1821 N.C. d.July 23, 1907 Alto Pass IL. Union Co.IL.James and Mary "Polly" Pirtle was listed in 1850 Stoddard co. Census spelled Purtell with several children. Also living near is a Nathaniel and Jesse Purtell but not sure of a connection?? James M. and family moved to Arkansas from about 1851-59.In 1860 they show up in Union Co.
You didn't give your name so I don't know to whom I am writing.

My grandmother was Sarah (Sallie) Amelia Pirtle (Pirtel) b. 2 Aug 1839 in
Pleasanton, Atascosa, TX, do.15 May 1934 Banks, Washington, OR. She married
James Hogan Conway be. 1828.

Her father was Felix George Pirtle. He was from KY and there were a lot of
brothers. Felix was a doctor and so where his bothers and son. It seems most
of them were in the medical field. The Conway family were mostly all
teachers or preachers in the Adventist Church and traveled all over
preaching and teaching. Some of them were in CA so could the Pirtle family.
They seemed to travel together.
Re: Indiana Pirtles

I am related through my mother's side to the Pirtle line that live in the Sullivan County area. There are Pirtles that live in Merom Indiana. Almost all of the Pirtles in these two areas are related. Danny Lee Pirtle lives on the south end of Merom just west of the old university, on main street. I'm sure that if you found his address and wrote to him, he would be a wealth of knowledge for you.

I'm not sure what I have on this couple but there are lots of Pirtles in My family and I know I have seen these names in my info. I also have seen a picture at the Sullivan Co. Historical Society with Puckett/Pirtle. Let me know what type of info you are looking for. I think I also have a school group picture with Harry Pirtle listed as one of the students.
