I have been helping a distant relation to trace her grandfather, Jonathan Pitch who was born sometime between 1833 and 1845 either in Witham Essex or Deptford, Kent.
He joined the british army 1858 until 1884 serving with the 19th Regiment of foot soldiers and the 3rd battalion rifle brigade.
In Jan 1882 he married Emily Amelia Bagnall Smith.
He had a brother, William, who possibly lived in Deptford, Kent and who was listed as his next of kin on his army service records until his marriage to Emily, when she became his next of kin.
On his marriage cert, Jonathan gives his father's details as John Pitch, coal miner.
Jonathan was found on the 1891 census living in Witham, Essex, with his wife and children. His age is given as 42 and place of birth given as Deptford, Kent.
He died in 1896, his age at death is given as 52!
At the time of joining the army in Chatham, Kent in 1858, he stated his age was 25, and place of birth was Witham, Essex.
Therefore we have no definite year of birth or birthplace for Jonathan Pitch. So we have had many problems trying to research him and his family.
Does anyone have any information on him or perhaps his brother William? Or father John Pitch, coal miner?
Perhaps somewhere along the line his name was changed or misspelt?
Can anyone help or offer advice.
Thanks
