Re: Pitcock's from Pennsylvania - Greene Co.

My name is Ronald Sherman Pitcock. My Father was Sherman his father was Herman, his father was William. Herman had at least 2 brothers named Charles & Will (possible short for William) and they came from either Little Washington or Waynesberg, PA. Will had 2 sons and a daughter. One sons name was Alan but have forgotten the others as i met them as a child about 60 years ago. I will relate to you a story my father told me about the Pitcock name. He stated that in the early to mid 1800's one of his grandfathers owned a huge farm in Greene County, PA and took in orphans to help operate it. He said that over 200 children passed thru that farm and adopted the Pitcock name. I have no way of knowing this to be true except for the fact I never knew him to stretch the truth. I do know that in Chatanooga, Tenn there is a cemetary with over 200 Pitcock's buried there. You may want to look that up thru Tenn. records.

Art
I just ran across your message from 6 years ago and hope you are still available.
My father was Sherman Pitcock, his father was Herman and his father was William and mother was Margaret Morris. Father always told me his family was from Green County, PA.
Herman's brothers were Charles & Will (assume short for William). One of those 2 was, at one time, a tax collector and were from either Little Washington or Waynesberg, PA.
Also I believe Will had two sons I met as a child at a family reunion. Alan is the only name i can remember and I believe they also had a sister.
If you have any info of the above names I would appreciate your response.
Sincerely Ron Pitcock

I need to know the children of John Pitcock/Mary Fisher to see if my line ties in. My maternal grandmother was a Pitcock, born in Lincoln Co. TN to Jacob B. and Sarah Donaldson Pitcock. His father was Lewis Pitcock, same county, his father Stephen Pitcock, originally from NC. His father was also Stephen and can be placed in 1754 in NC. I can go no farther back than that. But I do have male Pitcock cousins who might be interested in participating in the DNA program.

Patsy Castanon

Gary,

I followed your link for the DNA test project that is being done in England. I will keep you posted if they think I'm a candidate for the test.

My research up through the family tree is that I descend from Stephen Pitcock and Rachel Perkins. I'd like to support the research to connect the Pitcocks with the Pidcocks and determine if we can research more of our family histories.

Take Care,
Shayne Pitcock

Bernice,

I realize that you posted back in January for some help on your family history. I just started posting today and I saw your plea for information. I've pieced together many parts of our family history and we're connected with John Pitcock (1776-1859). John was married to Mary Fisher and they had 11 children. One of their children was Stephen Pitcock (1792-1874) who married Nancy Stansberry March 20, 1810. Stephen and Nancy had 7 children and the oldest was your g-g-grandfather Emanuel Armond Pitcock. I researched that line down through William "Jasper" Pitcock who married Margaret Atteberry Hestand. They had 6 children toghether and the middle child was Greenberry H. Pitcock. The only information I have on Greenberry Pitcock was that he was born February 16, 1848 in Monroe County, KY and died about 1866 in Illinois.

I hope some of this is accurate. It is a separate branch of the family tree from what I was researching. Did I get it correct with your grandfather and great-grandfather? Can you help me fill-in the details?

Thank you,
Shayne Pitcock

Earliest US Pitcock names.

I'm a decendent down through the Pitcock's from Stephen Pitcock (b. 1723/1733). I'm trying to sort-out the earliest known Pitcock family members in the US and, eventually, when they came to America and where they came from. I found the earliest records of what people think is Stephen Pitcock (b. 1723/1733). I also saw a will dated 1742 for a Stephen Pitcock. I'm wondering, since the names seem to repeat in the early years, if there wasn't a Stephen Pitcock, that had John and Thomas, and another Stephen that would've been born of Thomas. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Dan,
I have found a Birt Pitcock and Ellie Smith listed on this site:
http://www.jackmasters.net/index.html
Click on the Smith family genealogy and then the surname list N thru Z and you will see approximately twenty Pitcocks as well as your grandmother Ellie Smith. You should contact Jack Masters.
I see an Aaron Pitcock on the list. Aaron was one of John Pitcock/Mary Fisher's sons. Aaron has a son named Roland Pitcock married to Mary J. Page. They had four children, one named George (also on the above list). Possible that your Birt belongs in this family as many of their close relatives lived in the Mt. Herman area .
Gary

Gary:

I visited Betty Fahnestock today. She has led me to one small tidbit found at:
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/monroe/history/schoo...

It shows children in a school. For father R. M. Pitcock, it has children of Cora A, 15; George B; 13; Elzy F, 10; Dora L, 8; and Bertie S, 6.

Bertie could be my "Birt". The age is one year younger than what I would have expected based on date of this school report. Secondly, my father has told me he thought he had an uncle named George. My father was the youngest of 11 children so he doesn't know much of his ancestors.

This is the most I have at this time. Any help would be welcome. I had an uncle named Jay Birt and my grandfather's gravestone has Birt so I do believe Birt is correct spelling.

Sarah Miller, wife of John Fisher Pitcock

Does anyone know the names of Sarah's parents?

John Fisher Pitcock and Sarah settled in Monroe County, KY and had a rather large family.

In "The History of Monroe County, Kentucky, 1820-1988", there are some early settlers from the Miller family listed: John C. Miller and George F. Miller, sons of Joseph Miller and Priscilla Hale. Joseph Miller, b. Dec. 28, 1798 in Washington County, TN, was the son of John Miller and Catherine Bowman, dau. of Jacob Bowman and Susannah (Milhouse).

It states that John Miller came from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania where he married Catherine Bowman in 1789. John and Catherine then moved to Washington County, TN. In the biographical info on John C. Miller, the book lists the following as children of John Miller and Catherine: John, Solomon, Henry, Joseph, George, Abraham and Margaret (married Adam Sell).

Sarah Miller was born in east Tennessee about 1800. Was Sarah also a child of John and Catherine?

Joseph Miller and Priscilla Hale had other children, one was named Sarah. Was she named to honor a sister of Joseph?

I could not help but take notice of your message referring to a Charles Pitcock of Havre de Grace, Maryland.

My wife's mother was Hazel Ray Pitcock (1912-1989) born in Glasgow, Kentucky. She was married to Berlin Cumberledge (1906-1991) born in Center Point, West Virginia.

Hazel lived for much of her adult life in Baltimore County where her daughter (my wife) was born.

I just found it curious about this Charles Pitcock living in Havre de Grace which is very close to Baltimore.

Is there any chance this Charles Pitcock was related to my mother-in-law? Although, I do not recall her ever mentioning any Pitcock relatives in Maryland.

Bruce

Jewel Pitcock/Homer Lacy marriage

Trying to find marriage record for Jewel and Homer around 1922-1930. Rumor has it a child was born and died within a few months during marriage. Jewel is single by 1930 and can find no record of the baby or marriage. There is a Homer Lacy buried in Limestone County, TX - trying to determine if this is the same Homer Lacy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have some info for my Pitcocks from Greene Co.,PA.
Owen and Henry C. brothers, children of Jacob Pitcock and Margaret Eisiminger. I have been told that Jacob was the son of a Steven Pitcock, but I have been able to confirm it.
However I just recently started this line.

Henry and Naomi (Mason) Pitcock from Whitely Twp, Greene Co., PA. had children Elizabeth, William, Lucinda, Hannah, John W., Ruth, Owen, David B., Phoebe Jane, and George.

Ruth married Luther Connor. They are my great-great-grandparents.
I am looking for Naomi's Parents, her grandparents were, I think, Peter Mason and Naomi Jones.

Any info would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.
Thanks, Rob
rloxier@woh.rr.com
