Obituary: Francis W Pixley (1852-1933)

COLONEL PIXLEY

Colonel F. W. Pixley, F.S.A., died yesterday at Wooburn House, Bucks, at the age of 80.

The son of Mr. T. W. Pixley, of Freshwater, I.W., he was educated at St. Peter's School, York, was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple, and became a senior partner in the firm of Messrs. Jackson, Pixley and Co., chartered accountant. In 1905, he held the office of president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, of which he was an original member, having been elected on its formation, and he represented it at St. Louis, U.S.A., at the first International Congress of Accountants in 1904. He was auditor to the Duchy of Lancaster, and treasurer of the Chartered Accountants Benevolent Association, editor of "The Accountants' Dictionary," and the author of a number of books on accountancy.

Outside his profession Pixley had many interests. He was mainly instrumental in the efforts made to form a Roll of Baronets, which is now kept at the Home Office, and was Registrar of the Standing Council of the Baronetage and the author of a history of the baronetage. He was at one time lieutenant-colonel commanding the 1st Cadet Battalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and later identified himself with the Boy Scout movement at headquarters and in South Buckinghamshire. He was a Knight of Justice and Receiver-General of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in England, a member of the City Lieutenancy, and D.L. and J.P. for Bucks. He was late chairman of the National Institution of Apprenticeship, a member of the London Diocesan Fund, a member of Council and joint treasurer of the Queen's Institute of District Nursing and treasurer of Queen Mary's Committee, treasurer of the Buckinghamshire War Pensions Committee, of the country Lace Association, and of the country branch of the National Playing Fields Association, and late treasurer of the county Architectural and Archaeological Society, and Past Master of seven Masonic Lodges. Mr. Pixley was a man of great charm and of a singularly calm and lovable disposition, both in business and in home life, and possessed a large circle of attached friends. Mrs. Pixley, who was a daughter of Mr. J. P. Simpson, died last year, leaving two sons and three daughters, Colonel Pixley's second son was killed in the War

Source: The Times, Friday, Apr 28, 1933; pg. 19; Issue 46430; col B

[No familial connection; transcribed in passing]
POW/MIA Korean War PIXLEY

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Ottawa, Michigan as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: GEORGE A PIXLEY
Born: Feb 22, 1923 Caucasian
Date of loss: July 16, 1950 POW
Service # 36450428
C Co19th Inf Rgt, 24th Inf Division

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The PIXLEY family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Pixley - born 1830, 1833 or 1837
Place - Michigan or New York.
Married 1851 - Theron Henry Stimpson, my gg-grandfather - direct line through my mother's family.
Theron - born - 1827 - Mendon or Henrietta, Monroe County, New York.
From 1850 to 1880 they lived in Eaton County - Charlotte area and Lowell, Kent area.
Theron's brother LaFayette Stimpson aka Delafayett Stimpson, lived in Lowell, Kent up to 1880.
Before that, he was in Sebewa, Ionia County, Mich. - 1870

I am needing Vienna's birth certificate of information.
A Michigan Census birth lookup from 1830-1848.
A New York Census birth lookup from 1830-1838.
Need parents' and siblings' names.
Also, LaFayette Stimpson's death record for Michigan.
He was born in Barre, Orleans County, New York.

Thankyou, hope someone can help me with this,
Layna Jan Wilson,
Vancouver, Canada.
Rebecca Pixley Married William B. Barse (NY and MI)

I am looking for the parents of my gggreatgrandfather, William B. Barse. References to him come in Olean and also Adrian, Lenawee, MI. He is related to Claudius V.B. Barse and George Randolph Barse. After research for a long time in all the usual areas without finding proof, I am turning to y'all in the hope that someone may have an answer to this puzzle. Also, I am looking for the parents of my Rebecca Pixley. I don't know if they married in Michigan or New York

William B. Barse (b. @ 1824-?) m. Rebecca Pixley (b. @ 1824 d. 6/9/1895, NY, NY)

s. John Frederick Barse (b. 1849 d. 10/28/1916, Monmouth Co., NJ) m. Adelaide Elizabeth King (b. 1854, MI d. 1918, NY, NY)

d. Susan Belle Barse (b. 8/23/1875, Adrian, Lenawee, MI d. 1935, Pinellas, FL) m. Warren Hastings Miller (b. 8/21/1876, Honesdale, Wayne Co., PA d. 7/14/1960, Melbourne, Brevard Co., FL)

I believe that William B. Barse is a brother to Claudius V.B. Barse (b. 12/11/1817, Manchester, Ontario Co., NY d. 1885, Olean, Cattaraugus Co., NY) because CVB's son, Mills Wagner Barse (b. 12/6/1846) lived in California in the 1930s with my greatuncle Barse Miller (b. 1/24/1904 d. 1/1973) and family and the relationship was "cousin." Also, William B. lived in Olean at the same time as CVB, and moved at the same time to Adrian, Lenawee, MI as when business prospects in Adrian were undertaken by CVB and son. CVB had a son, William *C.* Barse who had died by the time CVB had articles written about him in Olean.

This week I discovered that CVB's parents are John Barse (b. 1784, NY d. ?) and Betsey Barse (nee ?) (b. 4/13/1788, NY d. 4/27/1861, Olean, Cattaraugus, NY). They lived in Farmington Township, Ontario Co., NY in 1820; Milo Township, Yates Co., NY in 1840; and lived in Olean, Cattaraugus, NY.

John and Betsey Barse had 8 children. I have been able to identify for sure the 5 following:

CVB Barse m. Mary Wade
Teresa Barse Potter
Mary H. Barse Martin
Rebecca R. Barse Wagner (or Wagener)
Clara B. Barse Whitney

This leaves room for 3 unidentified siblings. I hope someone has information that William B. Barse is one of them. That it is a close connection is clear, because Susan's son used both the family names Mills and Wagner when naming his children.

They are also related in some unknown fashion to George Randolph Barse's family. I had written the connection off, despite his appearing on our family tree as John Frederick's father. This family is pretty well researched and I could find no such child to George Randolph Barse and Susan Peironnet, and J. Frederick had his parents Wm. B. and Rebecca, living with them in 1880. After being written off, however, I discovered a letter from my greatgrandfather (Warren Hastings Miller) to my grandmother, his daughter, writing about a visit they'd had from George Randolph Barse, Jr., in which they compared the faces of the two Susan Barses, noting the typical Barse facial characteristics and writing of him as family!!!

Can anyone help? I am tearing out my hair, genealogically speaking (g). Thanks. Allrelated

Fredric and Rachel Pixley, Manchester, Ontario Co., New York

I have found a little more information since I last posted a query re my 3x greatgrandmother's Pixley forebears.

Rebecca Pixley b. 22 May 1823, Manchester, Ontario County, NY; d. 9 Jun 1895, New York City, buried in Olean, Cattaraugus County, New York with other Barse family members. She married bef. 1849 William B. Barse, either in New York or Michigan. I haven't been able to locate any marriage records.

Rebecca's parents, per her death certificate (no. 20278), are father, Fredric Pixley, and mother, Rachel, surname not listed. Her mother was also born in Manchester, Ontario County, NY.

Rebecca Pixley Barse lived in Ontario County, New York, later in Olean, Cattaraugus County, New York, and Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan.

Their children were:

John Frederick Barse, b. Nov. 1849; d. 28 Oct 1916, Spring Lake, Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Kate Adell Barse, b. and d. 1855

Clara B. Barse, allegedly (family oral history) an adopted daughter for whom I find no birth or adoption records.

I have had no luck at all in finding a likely Fredric or Frederick Pixley in Manchester, Ontario County, NY.

There are a number of Pixleys that were living in Ontario Co. at the time, however, and I feel sure that there must be a relationship.

Asa Pixley (b. 1752, Stockbridge, Berkshire Co., MA; m. 26 Jan 1775, MA; d. 26 May 1825, Farmington, Ontario Co., NY) and Olive Bingham Pixley had 11 children (Asa Pixley's Revolutionary War pension files [I just read it on footnote.com last night; I do not have a copy of it, sorry]). The familysearch.org entries only list Peter, Ira, Stephen, and Abigail. Ancestry lists some others. I wonder if Fredric or Fredric's father might have been one of the other children.

David Pixley (b. 27 May 1741; m. 8 Dec. 1763 Stockbridge, MA; d. 25 Aug 1807, Oswego, Tioga Co., NY) might be another candidate.

Can anyone shed light on Fredric and Rachel Pixley? I would greatly appreciate it, because this seems to be a hard brick wall.

Thanks,
Lorraine
Allrelated

Actually in the 1910 Census the son's name is Keith, which was my grandfather. I think the 3 1/2 might be in referrence to the number of months he was old, as he was born in Jan 1910.

As for the 1900 census, I had alway heard that his father was a Frank as well, and that his mother was Mary (madien name perry or petty) but I really didn't know. I will say I know nothing, nor have I heard anything about this brother Raymon, I don't know if he died soon after, or there is a whole other line of family that I don't know about.

As for Father Frank, I am doing searchs, but not coming up with much. There are a lot of Frank Pixleys out there. Thanks for the help and information.

Gordon
John Picksley married 1822 to Ann(e) Senescal at Willingham-by-Stow. They had children born at Kexby then moved to Saxby-by-Owmby where they had more children including my ancestor Ann Picksley born 1830.
John and Ann Picksley had a son Robert baptised 11 May 1828 at Saxby.I found him with a family living at Spridington were he worked for the Harrisons.
I know one of Robert's descendents George Seneschal Picksley was born 1901 at Owmby.
In my line there are 3 Cottinghams with the middle name Seneschal.Which there are several spellings.

So your grandfather was Albert Picksley, do you know anymore than that?
What year he was born and where?
When and where did he marry? That is what we need to help find out his father's name to help link the 2 Picksley families together.

Regards Shawn
