Looking for information on the family of W. W. M. Pleasants...aka William Wilson M. Pleasants. He married Rosetta (Rhoda) Sage in Scotland Co., MO in 1880. Known children are Daisy (Mary), John William, William Freemont, Joseph Gordon, Paul Morrison and Annie Agnes.
Family legend has it that William abandoned his family. Rosetta married again to Joseph Schwager and they had at least one child, Margareta.
ANY info on this family would be appreciated.
We have learned that Alice's marriage records were lost in a fire. These records would have had her parents names on them. So we've hit a wall on finding her family. And no one but her children can order her birth records. My mother has been dead for 20 yrs. and she was an only child. There is no death certificate that we know of at this time. Will check into that more in the county that she lived in when she died.

My Ggrandmother was Alice Irene Pleasants d:1960. She married a James Monroe Turney in Surry N.C. They lived in Carroll Co Va & at "Miller's Creek" She is burried at Draper Valley Pentacostal Holliness Church Draper Va. Also the only thing we found was possible parents of John & Sarah Pleasants. She is also possibly malundgen (part white/black/indian) There are so few Pleasants around you think this would be easier. I did find out N.C. was not keeping or required to have birth records untill 1913. We have the abstract of the marriage info, original was "lost" can't get birth record unless biological child. No death cert untill dead 50 yrs. Burrial records just say burried in 1960 which we knew. I also am at a brick wall.

Joseph Pleasants, 1707 Henrico County, VA

I am researching the Bottom family of Henrico County, Va and have come across some deeds that are puzzling me. Since they include Joseph Pleasant I am hoping someone on this list can shed some light.
In 1696, Alexander McKenny sold 100 acres to John Bottome located near the "plantation where Edward Mathews lived", on the north side of Baylys Creek, adj to the line of John Lad's "Claytons", north side of the James River.
In 1707, Joseph Pleasants sells to Thomas Childres the same land, it is described as the same as the deed of McKenny to John Bottom in 1696. My question is how/when did Joseph Pleasants acquire this land? I have at this time found no record of John Bottom selling it to Joseph. Please help if you can.
I have done considerable research into this family. There is a great deal of evidence on the three known children; John, Elizabeth, and Joseph. To date I have found no evidence of a connection between Alice PLEASANTS and John (1644-1698) & his wife Jane LARCOME (d. 1708.)
If anyone has any evidence that supports this relationship, please post it to the board.

Hi Andrew,

I am in Bournemouth. We moved here in '58 from Hayes Middlesex, which is where fathers parents were living at the time. The Briston connection that I am aware of is father's mother who was a Willimott! Have not yet found a Thomas, but he could be the son of one of the 1700's John Pleasants!

Regards, Mike

Hi there,

Thanks for that, but I started with the information that father has, which is about 60 names with various dates. 3 days on here following leads have given me 129 names, a lot of whom are children of the direct line and interesting, but not important at this point! Don't know anything about a family Crest, so, yes please, I think that father would be interested as well. Would be interested in coming up for a Pleasants reunion, if the insurance claim that I have going, has been completed! Have not seen an Owen in the lists that I have, but I probably miss a number at the moment!

BFN

Mike

Hi everybody,
My husband is a Pleasant descendant. The name was originally spelled "Pleasants" and his father decided to drop the final "s". Some of my husband's family still use the "Pleasants" version. He is descended through John Pleasants from Norwich, England who immigrated to Henrico Co., VA around 1665. I have his line going back to Norfolk, England to William Pleasants, born about 1528. My husband's line descends through the second son of John Pleasants, Joseph Pleasants.
I have also read that this family may have originally come from France before settling in England. They were worsted weavers by trade.

I would like to see if I can link any of my family history to yours. Although my family was from Hanover Va., it is so close I feel there is a connection. My grandfather was John T. Pleasants born 12-14-1882 and he had 10 children, Allen, Tarlton, Samuel, Ordway and Cutler (male) and Alease, Pauline, Ella and Della (twins) and Ruth. His wife was Josephine Bowles and was born in Louisa Va. on 6-4-1881. They are still buried on the home place in Hanover county. I was told by some of my aunts before they passed away that his father's name was Benjamin (Allen they think but not sure) Pleasants and may have been married to "Ella". Again unsure about this. My aunt had a copy of his will wish freed his slaves and I was told that some of them assumed the name of Pleasants. My aunt passed and so did her daughter so I have no way to get this information. Anything you can find will be helpful and I will happily share anything I can find with you.

The information I have on Dr. Samuel Pleasants Christian, born Jan 25, 1821, died Mar 3, 1909, is from the book "Pleasants and Allied Families". He married Amelia Coleman Gordon Dec 22, 1847. They had six children. She is also from the Pleasants line.
What can I help you with? Jan P. Grissom

This email on the Pleasant family was difficult to read. I don't usually bother with emails when the writer can't be bothered with capital letters.
I did find an "Alice Leslie Pleasant, born abt 1870, NC, married J. Q. Adams, a Baptist minister of Charlotte, NC". This is in the book:"Pleasants and Allied Families", written by Norma Carter Miller and George Lane Miller.

Dorothy, I am just beginning research on the Pleasant family. My greatgrandmothers name was Mary Eliza Pleasants and married Clarence D. Arnold. When my Mom knew her Grandaddy Arnold, they lived in Waynesboro, VA I believe. I will check with cousins on this. Please email me at n_evers@ntelos.net if this gets to you. I know it is a long shot since your post was years ago.

John Pleasants - Henrico Co., VA

My PLEASANTS research concentrates on Jesse Pleasants of Halifax County, VA, who was the great grandson of John Pleasants the emigrant of Curles, Henrico, VA. The line I'm tracking is:

John Pleasants-Jane (Larcome) Tucker
Joseph Pleasants (died 1725/60 - Martha Cocke
Joseph Pleasants-Sarah Goode (1st), Elizabeth Woodson (2nd)
Jesse Pleasants (c.1733-1804)-Elizabeth Smith (1745-1810)
John Smith Pleasants (1785-1856)-Nancy Thweatt (1785-1844)

Jesse was born in Henrico County, VA. He married in Cumberland County, Va., died in Halifax County and his line continued there. Jesse's father Joseph, grandfather Joseph, and great grandfather John were all Quakers, but Jesse was disowned because he married out of unity and for being baptised also. Jesse's father Joseph was also disfellowshipped when he married Sarah GOODE
outside of the faith, but was later reinstated and married Elizabeth WOODSON
at the Curles Meeting House in Henrico.

Jesse's son John Smith Pleasants served in the War of 1812. John S. Pleasants' wife, Nancy THWEATT, was the daughter of Giles and Sarah BARKSDALE Thweatt.

The last descendant I track through John Smith Pleasants' son, William Barksdale Pleasants (1812-1892), is Thomas Pleasants (b. c.1857). The Pleasants Estates in Halifax County (1015+ acres) was sold by Thomas D. Pleasants and his wife Gertrude B. Pleasants of Helena, Montana to John
Cunningham.

John Smith PLEASANTS was also the father of John R. Pleasants. John Randolph Pleasants, born January 21, 1815, Va.; died October 27, 1881; a gunsmith; married at Halifax County, Va. on November 9, 1837 to Elizabeth
Armistead BAKER. Their children were:

Mary Carrington Pleasants (Apr 1853-1 Sep 1946), m. Francis Alexander SCOTT
William Giles Pleasants (1854-1937),m. Rosa Lee GAFFORD

I have a copy of Jesse Pleasants' will written 25 Nov 1803 and probated 22 Oct 1804 and it reads in part:

"...I give and bequeth unto my son John Pleasants all my Tract of land whereon I now live after my wife's decease also a tract of land that came by my wife in Green briar County also three Negroes George Morning Kitty..."

An inventory of his estate filed 7 Nov 1804 lists among all the household goods, livestock, and farm equipment, his slaves including: "1 Negroe Man George; 1 Negroe Woman Morning child Joe." These are my 3rd great grandparents.

An inventory of the estate of John S. Pleasants [the son of Jesse Pleasants], filed 27 Jul 1857 lists among his slaves: Edmond 39 $1000. Edmond is the son of George and Mourning and my great great grandfather. I think that he was left to William Barksdale Pleasants, the eldest son who lived in Halifax and practiced dentistry in Richmond. OR Edmond may have been left to John Randolph Pleasants

I'm interested in ALL PLEASANTS family research. Slave ancestry is very difficult to trace. Some researchers never get past the 1870 census "wall" because this is the first time most of our ancestors are recorded with surnames. From that point back we have to first identify slaveholders - no easy task - and then trace through the owners' records of wills, deeds, property transfers, etc.

I've been corresponding for several years with other Pleasants researchers and it has been from these contacts that I've been able to develop a strategy to uncover my own roots. I track the descendants of John Pleasants of Curles looking for anything that may give me more information on my
Pleasants slaves ancestors.

Christine Jones, Richmond, VA
Email: jonesc@sprynet.com
Home Page URL: http://home.sprynet.com/~jonesc/

Am seeking info on my grandmothers family. We have been told that she was born in Yadkinville, N.C. but don't know her parents names. Our family tree is at a standstill without this much needed info. She was born May 29, 1873 and died in April 1960 in Wythe Co., Va. She married James Monroe Turney on Nov. 16, 1892 in Surry Co., N.C. They lived in Stewarts Creek, N.C. for awhile before moving to Va. She may have Melungeon family members. We were told that this was a possibility. Her husbands family were moon shiners and they changed their last names as they moved around to escape prosecution. We have records of them using the last names Kinney, Terney, Turner. Any info on my grandmothers family would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Pleasants Norfolk England

We have Pleasents/Pleasants in our tree. We have had a hard time tracing them. I "Claudia Harrison" who's mother "Debra Arnold" who's mother "Maggie Gladys Turney Arnold" who's mother was "Alice Irene Pleasents Turney." We are pretty sure of the spelling of the name but most findings say "Pleasants" we believe Alice's mom was a "Sarah" & her dad was a "John Pleasents" according to 1 census record, but are not 100% sure. I found Alice & James Turney's marriage info from Surry N.C. Alice we know was from Yadkin N.C. &/or surrounding areas. My mother & I plan to go to court houses there sometime in the next year "we hope" We are unable to find anything else at this time. Alice, Gladys, & her husband Deck Dillon Arnold are all burried at Draper Valley Pentacostal Holliness Church in Wythe Virginia. My aunt Sarah Mae "my mom's sister" is on the bord of directors there, & we are going to see if she can find anything out. Alice is in an unmarked grave. Alice's husband James Monroe Turney is burried at Millers Creek Wythe Virginia. Alice died when my mom was 6 years old. The 2 oldest siblings remember the most about them. We are trying to get as much info as possibe. Yes my ancestors are from England on my mom & dad's side of the family. We also think there is some Mulatto blood that runs through Alice also according to my aunt Lois "the oldest sister", but hasn't been proven yet. We have pictures of Alice & James on our tree along with others. If they are linked to your family, keep in touch & maybe we can find some stuff out somewhere or if you need to know anymore let me know & I'll let you be a guest at my tree to see more. Thanks Claudia poison8774@msn.com

The Pleasents or Pleasants family I'm looking for Alice is the daughter we think her parents were John & Sarah Pleasents, but are not positive. We do know Alice married James Monroe Turney, he is burried in Miller's Creek Wythe Co Va. Alice is burried in an unmarked grave at Draper Valley Pentacostal Hollines Church in Draper/Max Meadows Va beside her daughter Maggie Gladys Turney Arnold & her husband Deck Dillon Arnold. Alice had 4 known children 2 sons whoes names are unknown. 1 son named John "Johnny" & 1 daughter Maggie. All 3 sons died very young due to disentary or something like it from the times that most children died of back then. Maggie herself almost died but was the only child to survive & raise her own family. We found 1 census of James, Alice & John F Turney & said she was a mother of 3 children. Maggie wasn't born untill 1910. Thanks for any help. Claudia

the only pleasants i know from va there are issues with the last name it has been spelled alot of ways. my mother debra arnold was maggie gladys turney & deck dillon arnold's daughter. maggie was the daughter of james monroe turney & alice pleasents. that is the way it was spelled on their 1892 marriage licence from surry county n.c. we know alice was from yadkin n.c. we believe she might have lived in va but traveled to n.c. to marry. they lived in millers creek, wythe county va when they passed. she died as far as we know abt 1960. we think but haven't traced it well enough to know for sure her parent are john & sarah pleasents or pleasants. sometimes the name has no "s" & 1 census has sarrah & allice. we think this might be them. we also know alice had a sister named lila or lela but it was possibly a nickname we're not sure yet. so we are still on the hunt for the real info & kin folk. the pleasent name has been tough researching. there were only about 1 in 10,000 per person per state for the entire u.s. in 1920 but 1 state has 1 in 1,000 per person=kinda scarce really. if any of this helps great. if not i'm sorry. if it links to your tree let me know. thanks claudia. poison8774@msn.com

I still feel that the Samuel P. Christian you found is too young as mine married December 17, 1833 at St. John's Church in Richmond, VA. He is seen owning a house 1835 on the 700 block of 30th Street in Richmond on the Mutual Assurance Policies. From what I gather the Samuel P. Christian I seek was born c.1802.

I don't have anything on his family but only Elizabeth's - she was daughter of Capt. Charles Wills (1775-1820) and had siblings: Mary D. Wills who married 1820 to Philip Budlong and 1829 to Austin Lipscomb. Sarah Wills who married 1828 to John F. Alvey. Charles Wills who died 1839 in West Virginia. Josiah Wills (1810-1855) who married 1835 to Margaret Walsh and died Norfolk, VA from yellow fever.

Eric
Samuel P. Christian (physician) - Virginia

Looking for Samuel P. Christian. Not sure if he died in New Kent but did live there if he is the same Samuel P. Christian who lived in Richmond before and during 1835. Married 1833 to Elizabeth Wills but she may have died young and he remarried to the wife shown (Amelia Coleman Gordon) on the 1850-1870 census.

His middle name is probably Pleasants as his mother's maiden name was Pleasants.

Can anyone connect and provide info on this person who was apparently a physician? Thanks!

Eric

Hmmm... I am wondering if I have the correct person? I am seeking a Samuel P. Christian but he married 1833 to a Elizabeth Wills in Richmond, VA. I was assuming his middle name was Pleasants but could be Patterson. Just going by what some people linked to. The one you found would be too young. Is there another in the book "just in case" there is another Samuel Pleasants Christian? Thanks!

Eric
