Old Fisherman Drowned.
Moses Ploof of Ironville Found in Knob Pond.
Ironville, Sept. 21, 1914. Our community was shocked Saturday morning to learn that Moses Ploof had been drowned in Knob
pond sometime Friday morning while on a fishing trip.
Mr. Ploof, nearly 80 years old, usually spent one or two nights a week fishing at the pond, returning in the morning with a
large pail of fish.
Friday morning, when he did not reach home at the usual time, the family thought he had not had his usual good luck and was
trying some other water, as he sometimes did.
When he did not appear in the afternoon they became alarmed and his son Fred began a search.
At dark he found his father's boat anchored about 100 feet from shore and in it his fishlines and lantern.
The next morning the body was recovered in about six feet of water.
Coroner Reed viewed the body and rendered a verdict of accidental drowning.
Mr. Ploof is survived by a widow, six sons and four daughters.10
The death of Moses Ploof was to me. and must have been to all former residents of Hammondvllle, a great shook.
In his death a unique character in the life of the now deserted mining camp of Hammondville has been removed, and wherever
the clans of the once famous mining town gather a sigh and "sorrow akin to pain" well up when his death becomes known.
Moses Ploof lived a number of years at what was known as the Coal Job, and for many years was employed by the Crown Point
Iron Company as a stationary engineer and in other lines of work.
He possessed considerable skill as a maker of violins, and many are the former inhabitants of Hammondville who have listened
to the rollicking tunes as played by him on the instrument bearing his brand.
No gathering was complete unless "Moses" was there with his violin.
His death removes the last of the faimous stringed duet that used to play for the dances and other festivities that made the
gatherings in the famed mining camp a great event, his colleague. Mike Welsh, having met a tragic death several months
before.
No towering shaft of granite will mark the resting place of Moses Ploof, for none is needed, for his genial disposition and
his contribution to the life of Hammondville will long be remembered by those who knew him in the halcyon days of the camp.
He too, like the mining camp, is today silent, both are mute witnesses of the past.
While his death to all may seem untimely, yet who can say that having lived out his alloted time it was decreed by the Great
Architect that he should pass away beneath the quit and pellucid waters of Knob Pond, in the shadow of the mountain, and only
a short distance from the scenes of his former activities.
On the hill in the peaceful village of Ironville he sleeps his long sleep and I am sure all ex-Hammondvillers will unite with
me in saying requiescat in peace.
E. G. Locke.

In 1909, William Ploof of Ausable Forks, charged with abandoning his family of motherless little ones, was held before
Justice Trumbull.
The man was sentenced to the Elizabethtown jail for six months.
Ploof's wife died last summer and shortly after her death, Ploof went to Glens Falls, leaving his five young children without
any means of support.
Although he was working he did not send a cent toward their support nor did he even write to them.
Last week a ruse was resorted to, to lure him back to Ausable Forks.
A telephone message was sent to him telling him that one of his children was dead.
Although he seemed to care nothing about how they faced when living this false statement brought him hot-foot to the Forks
and his arrest and commitment followed.
Three of the children, Ellen, aged 12, Wilfred 9 and James 3, were committed to St. John's Orphan Asylum at Rensselaer while
the other two children are being cared for by relatives of Ploof.18

Auto Crashed Gas Pump Here Early Yesterday.
A 1935 Buick coupe, driven by Miss Virginia Manning, 23, of Ticonderoga, and a gas pump owned by John Ploof, also of
Ticonderoga, came in contact disadvantageously to both about 6:30 a. m. yesterday.
Miss Manning apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the gas station operated by Mr. Ploof at the top of
Wicker Hill in Ticonderoga.
She was accompanied in the car by its owner, Ray Manning, 32, of Niagara Falls, N. Y.
Both occupants of the car escaped injury although extensive damage was suffered by both the Buick and gas pump, about $100
worth to the latter, it has been estimated.
Arraigned before Justice of the Peace William Barry of Ticonderoga at 8:30 a.m. yesterday, Miss Manning pleaded guilty to
operating a vehicle without a license and Mr. Manning pleaded guilty to allowing the unlicensed operation of a vehicle.
They were fined $5 each.
It is understood that Mr. Manning has agreed to pay for the damage to the gas pump.58
