A suggestion from a French girl from Normandy - out of sheer curiousity : I am no genealogist nor linguist but "Blouf" "Plouf" sounds like a name of Viking origin to me.

There are many such names in Normandy • ouf coming from "urlf" meaning "wolf". (see below article from Wikipedia)

The interesting thing is that the name Ozouf for instance sometimes became Auzou or Auzoux or Auzout.

So I checked... on http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/quidonc/quiportecenom.do
and found many "Blou" and "Bloux" and "Blout", mostly located in western France (around the Loire Valley and Nantes).
Funny isn't it ? It is probably a completely false track but who knows.

And also some Plou and Ploux but these seem to be coming from the name "Pelou", meaning "hairy man" (and it is rather a southern name)

And - yet another track -Plou means "village" in Britanny, although it does not seem to be used in surnames.

As for "Quilleboeuf", I found many of them, with the spelling "Quillebeuf", most of them in Normandy.

I grew up in Rouen in the Seine Valley and I can swear you that this name cannot come from any place other than Normandy. It is so typical !

my family use patronyme Villebrun not Plouffe, but....on census of canada...Louis Villebrun say that line from scotish....Marie Anne collet, Collet is for the trib of collet, but maybe he is born on Quebec too....i will surch...my grand ma was villebrun too.;)

Did you ever get a response to your inquiry on Ancestry.com on 7 July 2000 requesting information on Frank Plouffe, the father of William Frank Plouffe?
If not, I found a bit of information that may be helpful.
Frank Alfred Plouff was born 23 Jan 1892, in Holyoke, MA, the son of Peter L. Plouffe and Ella Cook. On the Birth Register for Holyoke, MA, Vol: 421 ; Page: 616, the birthplace of Peter Plouffe is listed as Winooski, VT, and Ella Cook is listed as having been born in Chester, VT.
Frank's siblings included Rose, Amy and Arelia, who are listed with this family on the 1900 census for North Adams, Birkshire County, MA. On the 1930 Census, Pittsfield, MA, Peter and Ella are listed with another son, Paul F., age 15 and Myrtle, age 13. They are living in the same house as Frank and Emma.

I have other informations about our ancestry:
Antoine Plouf and Geneviève Demest, his wife, (father and mother of Jean) get maried in Paris on 1641-02-24 by contract of Me Philippe Perier, notary at Place Maubert in Paris. Antoine was shoemaker au Faubourg Saint-Marcel and was resident on Mouffetard street,parish of Saint-Martin.
Jean paternal grand-father, Jean Blouffe is teinturier at Paris. His maternal gransparents are Claude Demest, maître chandelier au faubourg St-Marcel, and Perrette Marigny.

I'm so excited to learn that.
I wonder how you learned Jean Plouffe's grandfathers name, and where Antoine and DeMetz were married.
Since you know the name of the man who made copies of the record, i wonder if you have a copy of the document.
No one seems to be able to get further back than that Jean Plouf's father was Antoine and his mothers name.
Hearing from you is like digging in an island for years and finally locating a teasure chest. TOO EXCITING.
The next step is to open the chest and see what it holds.

I have been researching the Plouffe name and I think I can take it back to Jean Baptiste and marie Madeleine Guilleboeuf. He came from France, however I don't have many dates other than Marriage dates. Any info is appreciated.

Jean'father was Antoine and his Grand-father's was Jean.

Antoine lived and operated a shoe maker& repair business on rue MOUFFETARD (st) in the 5 th arrondissment (+/- ward--borough) of PARIS FRANCE.

I was there this past june: What a feeling.

Antoine was married at "place Maubert", same area. The legal document--act-- was Notarised by Me N..Perier.

As for Plouffe s in France, I came to the same conclusion ie, Jean was the only son.That being said, there are - apparently--some Plouffe still living in France but my search has not yet produced expected results.

If you have a chance, go to Mouffetard street: lively, interesting and "feeling generating"

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Betty also worked at various industries in central Massachusetts. She retired from the Production Planning Department at Ludlow Papers of Ware, Mass. in the mid-1970s.

Betty enjoyed a variety of crafts and often won awards for her creations at various competitions. She also enjoyed homemaking, going to tag sales and doing all the puzzles in the daily newspaper.

(Its been several years since I have spoken to her and I am no longer sure if she is alive) She married Israel "Ernest" LaPlante and they lived in Warren, Massachusetts for most of their lives before moving to a warmer climate in Fayetteville, North Carolina in their late years.

Neil and Elizabeth grew up with their grandparents and relatives in Massachusettes. Vincent and Pauline went with their father who relocated to Staten Island (County of Richmond), New York shortly after the death of his wife Alice Fox Plouff.

As far as I know, Paul Plouff did not marry Emma Flood (nee Kelly)Flood Plouff Burns although they "were together". I believe that the John Thomas Plouff that you have listed is John Flood, the son of Emma's first husband. Paul Plouff and Emma Flood did have another child however, Paul Plouff (nickname "Honey") who was born/died in Staten Island, New York. Emma married Joseph Burns and lived in Connecticut. The last time I saw her was at my grandfather's funeral. She is deceased.
Another twist: There appears to be the possibility that Paul married again or had a female companion (Dorothy).
I have alot of research to do on this which will require me to go to Staten Island. I will keep your email address in my file and contact you with any updated information that I have. In the meantime, I'll send you some info later this week on the children of Neil Francis, Elizabeth, Vincent and Pauline. In addition to other infomation I have on Regina Georgiana Duvernay.
I am the grand-daughter of Vincent Joseph Plouff, my mother was Alice Rosemarie Plouff (named after her great-grandmother Alice Fox) I am one of Alice's eight children.

Just curious on as to how many decendents are out there on the Jean Blouf & Marie-Madeleine Guilleboeuf line.It sounds like there is a lot of us out there.I come in from, Euphrosine Plouffe,Francois Plouffe,Pierre Plouf,Francois Plouf,Jean Blouf & Marie-Madeleine Guilleboeuf.Euphrosine Plouffe would be my 4th great grandmother.She married Louis Lacroix.Sorry about some of the spelling.

Thank you for this information! I can update you on Dolores Marie Plouffe. She was my mother-in-laws mom. She died August 1978 in Florida. (She has four living children, nine living grandchildren, and four living great-grandchildren.) I appreciate your help on this! I am still new at this and it's been a lot of fun for me. I am giving this as a gift to my mother-in-law and my husband. I think it's important for our children to know the family history on all sides.

I noticed that the Plouf name seems to change. I am giving this as a gift to my mother-in-law for Christmas. thats exactly correct about Madeleine.
she was one of the girls sent by Louis XIV to New France to marry the frenchmen there and populate the land. Madeleine Guilleboeuf married Jean Plouf on June 24, 1669
there are no GUILLEBOEUF listed anywhere either, but there is a town in france named Quilleboeuf.

Hi Dick,
Our first ancestor is Jean Blouf, son of Antoine Blouf, from France.
When Jean arrived in Nouvelle-France (now Quebec) in about 1665, the name was changed to Jean Plouf by the few ones who knew how to write, the priest and the notary. We don't know why they changed the name but it may be only because of a misunderstanding.
The descent of Jean gave all the Plouf, Plouff, Plouffe, Pluff and Ploof that we now know in North America (although there may be some Pluff originating from Germany that are not related and arrived later).
Unfortunately, to this date, it is not possible to dig older and find the marriage or parents of Antoine Blouf, the father of Jean Blouf, because all the pre-1860 parish registers were consumed in a great fire in Paris, France in 1871.

I show Marie Madeleine Guillboeuf's parents as Nicholas Guilleboeuf and Madeline Vavelin. I think this came from the web and that Marie Madeleing Gullboeuf was born in St. Etienne, Rouen, Normandie, France. Hope this helps, but my sources are poor.

I have Jean and Antoine with a "P", but you are indicating that if they were born in France, it should be with a "B". Is that correct. I would love to view your web site. My nearest Plouffe relative in my my great grandmother, Octavie Plouffe who was born in in 1868. Jean Plouf/Blouf father Antoine Blouf/plouf who was wed to DeMetz in Paris in the 1600's
I find nothing earlier for PLOUF or QUILLEBOEUF than their parents names.
I doubt Jean Plouf and wife Madeleine Quilleboeuf were the ends of both their lines.
I suspect the spelling was different before the arrived in Canada.
Its worth mentioning that the letter F and the letter S look (almost?) identical in old english (french?) writing.
That observation has led me to consider that Blouf may have looked like Blous by whoever copied the original records.
Then THAT led me to consider that BLOUS could be a variation of BLOIS
(somewhere researching BLOIS i found a variation BLOIIS.)
BLOIIS could easily be miscopied as BLOUS/F
admittedly this is a stretch
but no bigger stretch of the imagination than to believe that the simple answer is that our JEAN BLOUF/PLOUF was the last of his line
And at the same time he happened to marry
(and beget what begot ALL OF US)
Madeleine Quilleboeuf, who was the last of her line also.
(in which case we all owe some sort of high regard for PRIMOTs ... as the same fate that befell all our previous ancestors might easily have taken our JEAN as well had he not traveled to Montreal)
for the benefit of you cousins who don't know it...JEAN arrived in Montreal as an indentured servant to the PRIMOTs
in the year 1666
PRIMOTs, incidentally, were the adopted parents of CHARLES LEMOYNEs wife.
thats of some interest because
a. LEMOYNE traveled back to France several times,
and it stands to reason that he MAY HAVE HAND PICKED the indentured servant who was to live with his elderly inlaws for the three years of his indenture.
some sources show that BLOUF/PLOUF originated from ABBEVILLE
ABBEVILLE is the nearest town? on the map to LEMOYNES city of origination, which was DIEPPE.
b. CHARLES LEMOYNE IS A HERO IN MONTREAL HISTORY. He and his sons engaged in many battles/adventures in which JEAN and his sons might easily have been party to.
if i'm not mistaken, JEAN AND MADELEINE lived awhile, perhaps a long while, in the CHARLES LEMOYNE residence.

I am researching all the descendants of Jean Blouf, our common ancestor from France, so all the persons named Plouffe, Ploof and Pluff (although some Pluff descend from Germany). My database is now comprised of more than 20,000 people with these names. They are from 7 provinces of Canada (mostly from Quebec) and the 50 states of USA (mostly from New England).

She married my gg grandfather, Leonard Leo Hetu b 1831 Lavaltrie d 1914 Michigan
They had 3 children;
Mary Ann b 10 Aug 1860 Corunna Ont
Leo (Leonard E) Hetu b 17 Feb 1862 Corunna Ont (my great grand father)
Alexander Hetu b 18 Jan 1864 Corunna Ont.

My gg grandfather was remarried in 1866 in St Clair County Michigan to Catherine Welch. This got me wondering what happened to Philomene Plouffe. Other than being listed as the mother of the above 3 children, I have been unable to find any record of her anywhere ... birth, death, marriage etc. I believe her parents were Charles Plouffe and Marie Ester Duplanti and may have been born in Grenville County Ontario. I did find one Philomene Plouffe, but she appears to be the wrong one.

If you have any information that could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Any information on Mary Ann and Alexander would also be welcomed.

his mothers name was Genevieve (Charpentier)
he had a brother named Levi and a sister named Marguerite.
it is possible that the Genevieve you mention is a niece or cousin.

I have come across the Hetu name in census records for Grenville County in the past, but I am having a hard time relocating them now. it seems the site has changed a bit since I was last on !

however, if I come across a connection of some sort, I will repost it for you here
