Interesting to read the posting on John Poag. My Grand Father was Alvin Poag Sr. and my Dad was Alvin Poag Jr. Seeing all of Grandfathers relatives names bring back memories. I remember traveling with my dad visting with Grandpa in Topinabee, Michigan. Names seem to be forgotten along with many pictures of the Poag Farm in Saginaw, Michigan (Praire Farm - Burt, Michigan)
Appreciate reading the articles.

I have sources stating middle name of Manuel as well as Martin with no real documentation to back up either name. All sources show marriages to Sarah, Clarissa and/or Dorcas.
Janet,
I have not found the grave. I found the section of tombstone in a display outside a restaurant located near Waynesboro. If it is still there, I could get a photo of it and e-mail it to you. You may want to contact the Poags 2 families here in town and see where they bury their people.
My wife's Goodmans - we have them traced to Thomas Goodman, born in 1849, and living in Perry County in 1860 with his mother Elizabeth.
No father is listed, but their houseshold was listed next to Robertson Goodman, who was born about 1810 in KY. This is about 10 or 15 miles as the crow flies from the corners of Lewis/ Hickman County area where they settled. Pretty sure that Robertson is the grandfather of Thomas. I wish
we had that definite.
Please share anything that you may have about this family.

Thanks.
Ken
My grandfather supposedly had relatives in SC but not sure much about them. He was Joe Barber Poag, died in 1989 so he was born around 1900 or so. My father is James Tommy Poag (born in Lexington, NC). I believe there is a cousin around my dad's age (born in the 40s), Thomas Poag that lives in SC too. Don't know really where to start but thought someone may know something.

I am searching for the C.C. (charlie) Poag family. Have little info but the family showed up in Murray County, Ga possibly in the 1800's. There are several spellings of the name Poag but as a general rule when spelled POAG there is a family connection. There was at least two brothers that moved to Georgia and due to a family dispute one moved to Oklahoma or Texas and never heard from again. A James W. Poag married Verdie Mae Hogan in Murray county in the 1930's and they had five children: Charles, John, Ray, Pauline and Jackie. Do you have any info that could connect our family?

Poag/Pogue in Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama

I am trying to find out who my grandmother's parents were. Her name was Ressie Mae Pogue, born 1920 in Florence, Alabama. She married William Goodman, before she was remarried to Stanley Mittelsted later on in her life.

Her grandparents were Charles Poag, and Margaret (Maggie) Scott. Charles Poag was the son of Madison Poag, and Jane Robinett, and Madison Poag was the son of Robert McBride Poag, and Esther Burgess. What makes it so complicated for me is that I believe my grandmother took the last name of her mother, rather than her father, who was from South Carolina.

My grandmother only died in 1984, so if anyone out there remembers her, or if anyone has any information that might aid me, please contact me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Esther Burgess Verification?

I have often read from the family information on the internet that our ancestor, Esther Burgess, was Chickasaw. I hate to question family lore, but do we really know for a fact? The only source I've seen cited is a genealogy book called The History of Wayne County. Experience has shown time and time again that oral family accounts of Native ancestry are all too often erroneous.

I don't doubt Esther's Native ancestry, but I am starting to wonder about the specific tribe. I cannot seem to find anyone in the Chickasaw tribe with the last name of Burgess on the Dawes Roll. I see plenty of Burgesses in the Creek tribe, however. Is it possible that the person giving the account in The History of Wayne County mixed up the tribes?

Ken,

After much searching, I found Ressie's parents, fortunately.

That tombstone you mentioned probably was, indeed, the tombstone of my ancestor, since he fought in the 10th Tennessee Infantry Co. A during the Civil War.

Could you perhaps tell me where you found the grave? I'd like to visit it.

P.S. Is your wife from the English branch of Goodmans in the Wayne/Lewis county area? According to Ron Goodman (www.regoodman.com), there were two unrelated branches: one of English descent, and one of German descent, I think. If your wife is from the English one, I would be glad to share information about the family with her if she wants.

Thanks!
Janet

Al, I would love to have any Poag info you can provide. I had a very large database ONCE. Something happened to it and I can't get in it. A few days ago I organized my hard copy info (finally bought a file cabinet) but I can't find the Meredith/Fulton info. I was told by a researcher about Frederick, Sr. and Mary Fulton found in VA in the late 1700's. Mary's father's name was Thomas Fulton and I believe they were neighbors in VA. They traveled to TN together. You can email me at SSbr2day@aol.com and we can find out just how related we are.
Still searching,
Sandra
