Hello Tim -

Sorry to butt in, but did you say that your grandfather, Walter, is from Rogers City, MI? And that he died a few years back?

My grandfather is also named Walter Poch. He died in 1997 there in Rogers City, MI. Can't be a coincidence! My mom tells me that Rogers City is quite small.

Just to compare notes, Walter L. Poch died in 1997. His parents, Walter & Hannah (Bredow) Poch died in 1980 & 1988 respectively.

Are we talking about the same line here? Please let me know! drdesructo@hotmail.com

Jeff
Hello Shirley!

My name is Jeff, but I'm not Walter jr.'s son. I'm Walter jr.'s grandson. I'd love to exchange info with you. I have a copy of Walter Herman Poch's SSN application. On it he says that his mom's maiden name was Migiskie. Does that make any sense to you? I've since contacted the same Gloria that you've corresponded with (apparently a while ago). She finally remembered that Clara did have a different maiden name. She remembered it as Wisnewski. Or Wischnofske, or something to that effect. Gloria also named her dad's sister, Rose, and Adele. She didn't mention anything about a Lillie.

I did find a lot more info about Walter Herman's wife, Anna. Turns out her full name is Hannah Louise Bredow. I have all kinds of pictures of Hannah. Not many of Walter Herman. Do you have any old pictures?

Jeff

Feel free to contact me for any further info! I'd love to share info!

John, Thanks for inviting me to join the group looking up info on the Pochs, etc. I will be more than glad to share any info I have and would like to learn more. I have done a lot of research on records at the St. Johns Lutheran Church, where the records from old St. Peters Church in Detroit Mi. are kept.
My husband and I spent several days looking thru books and have taken a lot of notes, but not sure how they all fit in. You said there may be Moltke Church records that the Pochs are in. Is that in Rogers City Area? Do you know anything more of how Herman Poch died or for sure where? I have a copy of a declaration of Intention for him to become a citizen of USA, and underneath is the same for an August Poch, who they say is his father? I am not sure of this, as I researched in the
LDS Church near here and found info on a Herman Poch born in Prussia with father and mother listed as Wilhelm Franz
Boecke (Poch) born abt 1840 in Pommerania Prussia with
spouse of Charlotte Christine Wrasse b/abt 1842, They had 5 children 1st. born being Herman Albert Gustav Boeck (Poch)
b/Aaaapril 19, 1863 married to Clara Wissnewski . Maybe you can help me on this.. Where do you live? We live in Hale, Mi. about 65 miles south of Rogers City and just off of M-65 Hwy. Thank you... Shirley

Shirley, the information regarding Clara's parents posted on
Ancestry.com hasn't been confirmed. I believe Clara is the sister of Hermine. Hermine's husband, August Hoeft, is the son of Wilhelmina Hoeft, Wischnofsky, Domke. Hermine's father, according to her death certificate, is John Wischnofsky, mother's first initial is "W". On August's death certificate it lists his mother's maiden name as Meyer. On August's mother's death certificate it's listed as Hoeft. In the 1870's John and Wilhelmine had a son die. This is where her first name appears. His name was Albert. The key to the fact that your information is from the posting on Ancestry.com is the fact that the family in Oregon dropped the y off the last name and replaced it with an "e" in the 1920's. We have a lot of information to share...

John

They are my great-great-grandparents. I have found out through other sources essentially what you have.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find the death date for Clara Poch? I have asked my Poch relatives, many still living in the Rogers City area, if they had any further info.

You said you had some more info on the Pochs or the Wischnofskes (sp?)? If so, please e-mail me at: jeff@dialresults.com.

Thanks!

J.

Hi Jeff: have been wanting to get to bay city to meet your sister Gloria Reynolds, but have not had time. I have been working on the poch family history for some time, somethings i am a little confused on, but then i am new at this. My dad and your grandfather were cousins. My husband and I were in rogers city a few years back and tried to locate your dad. just found out on the internet that he had passed away in 1997. Sorry to hear about that. Maybe we can share some information if you have any. I also have several pictures of your grandfather and grandmother. Write and let me know.
Thank you Shirley

Re: Herman Clara Poch

I do have information on Clara Poch, nee clara Rosalia
Wischnofske, born on October 10, 1859 in Prussia. father and mothers names were John Wischnofske and Wilhelmine
Meyer Hoeft Wischnofske. Clara and Herman Poch were married in Rogers City, Mi. on August 3, 1879 I have a copy of their marraige certificate. Also a copy of Declaration of Intention to becomee a US citizen for Herman Poch. I am not sure but think his father and mother were August Poch and
Caroline Poch, nee florip. Have more to share, but have to get it together, I am just new at this, but boy is it fun.... Clara Poch died as Clara Groening in Detroit, Mi. on June 8, 1935.
That was her second or third husband, not sure. Herman Poch died according to what i have found on January 20, 1894, but have nothing to confirm that.

Hello!

Does anyone know anything about these people? Herman Poch & his wife, Clara Migiskie. My source of info for this is my great-grandfather's social security application. My g grandfather, Walter Herman Poch, was born in 1892 in Buffalo, NY. Again, that's taken from his application.

I'm told that there might be some confusion about Clara's maiden name. I've heard it could be Wishcnofske, or some variation. If anyone has any info, no matter how significant, please let me know at drdestructo@hotmail.com! Thanks! I've been hitting brick walls with this surname.

Thanks again!

J.

Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Poch, 1878

My great-grandfather, Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Poch, was born July 8, 1878, and emigrated from Pritzig, Germany, Kries Rummelsburg, in 1886.

His father was Johann Poch and his mother was Charlotte Yok, and his father was known as Trouta Poch, apparently named for his hobby of poaching trout from the ponds, rivers, and streams of the ruling duchy of that region.

The family traveled to Deerfield or Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States, and settled as farmers in Deerfield and Jefferson, Wisconsin. Some of the family branch surnames were apparently changed to 'Pooch' by U.S. immigration officials, and that is my last name today (other relatives have changed their names back to the original spelling of 'Poch').

During World War II, my grandfather and his family sent CARE packages to relatives back in east German Pomerania, Hinterpommern, which was east of the Oder-Neisse Rivers and later annexed by Poland after the war. Thus, Pritzig is now officially known as Przytocko. Many of the German residents there were driven from this area by Poles as part of an ethnic cleansing program in revenge for earlier Nazi atrocities. Their farms, home, and possessions were confiscated by Poland, and all means of contact were lost with those relatives since 1945.

I would be interested in tracing this side of my family as far back as possible. Many of the official records of that area may have been relocated to one of several Lutheran Evangelical Church central repositories in Germany, which I am in the process of contacting.

Please let me know if you might have any information on the Poch or Pooch surnames in Pomerania.

Thanks,

John Pooch
