Re: Amelia Sailer Poda

Amelia, or Emelia, Sailer Poda emigrated to the US in 1856 according to emmigration records she landed in New York on 11/14/856 and she was 29 yrs old. On the same ship was Francis Poda who was 32 yrs old at the time. In fact, there names appear together on the passenger list of the ship Admiral. On the ships records, Francis Poda lists himself as Prussian.
I believe they had a son Francis and lived for a while in New York. Evidently Francis, Sr. died or abandoned the family between 1860? and 1870, because he is not listed on the 1870 NY census but Emelia is along with three children. Eventually Francis moved to Elizabeth and was a butcher, I think.
Francis, Jr. is my grandmothers father.
Don't know if this is of any use to you?

I have no idea if Poda is french.... i DO however know that it is Hungarian. The town of Podafa was founded by them, and is now known as Povoda due to the collapse of the hungarian empire, and seeing as the town was in slovak territorry. Tracing family line on papers it went straight from Calgary AB, CA, to Hodos SK, and then Povoda (podafa)

Anyone know of descendants of Amelia Sailer Poda? She was born in Germany in the early or mid 1800s, moved to France where she married a Frenchman named Poda and then moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey in the late 1800s.

Thanks!

Dana

June,

I have just started researching my family last name of Podaski....I had no idea there were so many variations of where it came from..
I just made a trip to new york for research and found out from an Uncle that there were some letters dropped from the original name but he couldn't remember which ones. I have found a number of living Podaski's that I hope to get that spelling from. Your information is very helpful and interesting.

I have also found out that we probrably orginated in austria which in the late 1800's had absorbed the country of Poland. I do know for a fact the family originated from that area as Polish is still spoken by aunts and Uncles today...I have been told that my grandfathers parents came from poland but can find no Podaski's on any ships passenger lists..

Another variation I have found in the new york census of 1920 (which matches my grandfathers name and birth date) is Podgrasky. Lol....another variation to research...If I come up with anything else I will be happy to pass it on. thanks so much for passing your info on to me. I learn more and more everyday.

Dawn

Adam, I have xerox copies of William H. V. Campbell's war record. He was wounded in the right hip, July 1864. He was on duty in Virginia. He was first attached to Co. B. 12, Al. Inf. Regt. He appears on the muster roll at Camp Bradford, under Joseph Bradford in Coosa County, Al., June 17, 1861. Enlistment indicates "for the war." He appears on a Prisoner's of War Record at Point Lookout, Maryland on 4 Apr 1865, captured at Petersburg. Records indicate that he was released 10 June 1865.
June

Joseph Poda is, supposedly, buried in this same cemetery. I have marriage records on the following Poda's from Arkansas: D. W. Poda, Fleet Poda, Jim Poda, Tom Poda, Dudley Poda, and Andrew Poda. The dates of marriages begin in 1898 through 1914. Do any of these names appear in your line? Do you have knowledge of Archibald Poda's parents?
June

Hello June, you appear the main contact on here when it comes to this surname or this variation of the surname. I have seen until tonight that the name was shortened from the other listed or that it could have been Boda.
Man this sure is confusing. I live here in Alabama and am connected through William James Campbell that married Elizabeth Pody; daughter of Andrew Jackson Poder(another variation). I did find information on the net showing that Henry Poder came to America fighting in the Revolutionary War as a Hessian soldier. Showed he was captured, then escaped to then fight for the Colonies. I then traced from there to Elmore and Coosa counties here in Alabama. If you need any information, which I doubt, I will freely give it. If you could share the info that you have about the original Pody family or it's origins from Germany,I would appreciate it. thanks

I must say tracing the Pody line is quite confusing. I am linked to Elizabeth Pody and W.James Campbell by:
William H.V. Campbell/Aserine Bailey
Henry Jackson Campbell/Emma Liza Philips
Beulah Ruby Campbell/Havard Yale Smith
Emma Delores Smith/Bob Darabaris
and then me: Adam Blake Darabaris
I have not seen anything on William H.V Campbell yet. Right now I am at a stand still. I have used up a good portion of the sources at the Museum downtown here in Montgomery. It is 3 streets down from where I work; I would go there every day on my lunch break. I am now finding alot of my information through people such as yourself.
You are right about the Pody family being easy to find in Coosa Co. I have alot of pictures of them I have zeroxed out of books there. If I could ever get my scanner hooked up I would send some of these to you.
I have looked in German records for Henry Pody(not knowing it was spelled with a B) many times and could never find anything. Have you had any luck with your search in European documents? Well I will let you go now, nice hearing from you so soon. talk to you again later. bye

Dawn, we are known by the name of Poda and Pody, which is believed to have been shortened from Podraski or Podestra. The name is German, and we believe that our ancestors emigrated circa 1776. Further research indicates that the name was spelled at least ten different ways. It has been very difficult to trace, and in more than one instance the P. in the name was read as a B. Has the name Louis Peter Podraski or Podestra come up in your research? It seems that the families are located in Wisconsin and Indiana. They are now called Pody or Poda. My search is for Henrich Bode, pronounced Bo-da in 1776. His brother was Fredrich Bode/Bo-da and the two were found in Rockingham, Virginia just after 1776. Fredrich stayed in Virginia where he married his German descent wife. Henrich left Virginia and came southward. Our family believes that Henrich's wife, Mary, was a daughter or a sister to Andrew Wolf, also of German descent. The next records we have are recorded as Henry and Mary Poda in Wilkes Co. Georgia. Henry died in 1795 and Mary died in 1822. Their children, Andrew, Susannah, and Francis settled in Alabama. I have no verification as to a record that the name was once Podaraski or Podastra, however, those in Wisconsin and Indiana who are now known by the name Poda and Pody do have the above names in their lines. Let me have your thoughts on this. How are you connected to either name?
June

Poda's from Arkansas

Looking for information on Poda from Arkansas. My grandfather was Archibald Poda-he married Evelyn Gill. They had 6 children. We know his mother was full-blooded American Indian and his father was also American Indian (3/4's is what we have heard). He was born in Arkansas sometime b/w 1910-1920.

Any help would be appreciated.
Carrie

My line is Henry and Mary Pody of Wilkes Co, GA ca 1790-1840. The line to this day is PODY, however in those two I have found reference to their being called Poda, Poder and Pader. You might check into those variations as well. If anyone has anything on my line, please email me at briana5555@aol.com. Thanks
