Nora Alice Poe and Evan H. Poe, Jr. are my grandfather's brother and sister. My grandfather is Reason Presley Poe - called Reese - born 2 Jul 1853 in Marshall, KY, died 12 Feb 1912 in Jonesborough, Union, Illinois. I am interested in any further information that anyone can provide.

Re: THOMAS JACOB POE

Check out Jacob F. Poe, born ca 1786, who was 1st listed in the 1820 Census of Chatham County NC. He was in Saline County IL by 1830. Jacob had 3 males under 10 years of age on the 1820 Census. One of the trees has Jacob F. listed as a son of William Poe (on the 1790 Chatham Co. Census, and who died by 1800), son of William Poe (deceased before 1790), son of older Simon Poe (on 1790 Chatham Co. census. Jacob F. Poe's brothers were listed as Hasten Poe, born 1782 (who remained in NC), James Cain Poe, who settled in Lafayette County MS, and William Poe, who died young. I believe Jacob F. Poe may have been married twice. The wife of his children born before 1820 was probably deceased before 1850. Hope I have been of some help.

The place to do research on your Poe is Chatham County NC. Jocob F. was 1st listed by name in the 1820 Census of Chatham County NC. As you know he was in IL after that. He may have been the son of William Poe on the 1790 Chatham County Census. One of the trees has Jacob F. Poe, Hasten Poe (whom I have been researching), James Cain Poe, and William Poe, as sons of William Poe (died 1800), who was the son of William Poe (deceased by 1790), who was the son of older Simon Poe (on 1790 Census). Hasten Poe, born 1782, remained in Chatham County NC. James Cain Poe, born ca 1793-1798, settled in Lafayette County MS. Their brother William died young. Their father may have been married twice. I believe your Sarah must have been Jocob's 2nd wife. Jacob had 6 children (under 10 years of age) on the 1820 census.

Floyd County, Ky. families

My father-in-law, the late Lunda Poe, was born in Floyd County, Ky and grew up there until the Great Depression. Lunda Poe's parents (along with a couple of Lunda Poe's uncles) migrated to Hardin County, Ohio during that difficult time in our nation's history.

Fortunantly, I have been able to find a bit from local obituaries to find out who my wife's ggrandfather was. According to the obituary of Edward Poe (Lunda Poe's uncle), Edward Poe's parents were "Johnnie and Rainey Whitaker Poe". Johnnie Poe, born circa 1867 in Floyd County, Ky, and Rainey (or Luraney?) Whitaker (born circa 1878) are believed to have married in Floyd County, Ky. At least nine of their children (maybe all eleven) were born in Floyd County, Ky. --- possibly all in Prestonburg.

An online source lists the above "Johnnie Poe" as being John Poe, Jr. and lists his parents as a "John Poe, Sr., born in Tennessee in 1840, and "Polly Allen", born about 1830. However, this same sight shows John & Polly Allen Poe's first child, James Poe, as being born circa 1850. Thus, it would appear that John Poe, Sr. was probably born circa 1830.

In additon to James Poe, born circa 1850 & John Poe, Jr, born circa 1867, the children of John & Polly Allen Poe are said to be Thomas, born circa 1855; Anora G., born circa 1856; Harry, born circa 1862; Barbary, circa 1864; Lewis, circa 1865 and Kate, circa 1866.

John & Rainey Whitaker Poe's children were:

1) Audie Poe (1894-1981) who married Smith Johnson and moved to Kosciusko County, Ind.
2) Clarence Poe (1897-?)
3) Claude Poe (1897-1955) who married Alice Ousley and moved to Hardin County, Ohio. (my wife's grandparents)
4) Edward Poe (1901-1987) who married Susie Allen and moved to Hardin County, Ohio
5) James Poe (abt. 1903-?)
6) Benjamin Poe (abt. 1906-?)
7) Alkie Poe (abt. 1908-?) who married George England
8) German James Poe (1909-1941) who married Lou Grace Whitaker and moved to Hardin County, Ohio
9) Erman Poe (1913-1996)
10) Surilda or Serelda Poe (abt. 1916-?) md Wayne LaMaster of Russell, Ky.
11) Earnest Poe (abt. 1922-?)

Any corrections and/or additions to the above data would be appreciated! And, any tie-ins to the Va. & N.C. Poe family would be fantastic!!!

Did you ever find your Poe info? The Poe you are searching for is Capt Thomas Washington Poe and the boat was the sternwheel steamer Nick Wall. I do not know who has posession of his journal.

The Nick Wall met a tragic end when it struck a snag and sunk near Napoleon, AR on Dec 18, 1870 with 15 cabin passengers and 135 on deck. Here a grisly incident occurred that Mark Twain retold in “Life on the Mississippi”. Capt Thomas W Poe attempting to save his wife trapped in a stateroom chopped a hole in the roof with an ax striking the unfortunate Martha Jane Poe in the head.[16] Her body was returned to Georgetown for burial. Thirty-nine lives were lost including Capt Poe’s young nephew, Charles McClure. According to the clerk of the Nick Wall, the steamer was a total loss. The boat was valued at $22,000 and insured for $15,000. She was laden with 3,000 barrels of flour and a large lot of assorted freight for the Red River.

I did find one reseacher that has his death at age 6 or 7. But I don't find any records to support that? If you know Albert Sr's dob or his wife's name that would clear this up. My Sr was born 1 jan 1895 his wife was Lola Belle Wilson born dec 1893 in Audrain Co MO. If your Albert was in the Navy, maybe I can find his records? I'll let you know if I do. Thanks again! Davis, his second wife. John was from St Joseph, Mo. Lydia Jane Nicholson was born on 11 Dec. 1847 and married William Nelson Henry on 22 Aug. 1875 in Winchester, Scott cnty, Illinois. Her father John R. Nicholson was born in 1803 Vermont and died in 1888 in Republic Cnty, Kansas.
Hello, Charlotte was born in 1922 and passed on in 2000. She was born in Dupage cnty, Ill. and died in Calif. She was suppose to marry Albert L. Poe in the 40's after being discharged from the navy during world war 2. Albert was stationed I believe in the midwest, Okla, Texas at that time. I am looking for their information and families after their marriage. She is the daughter of my father's sister Mary Kurth. Hope this helps, Ernest D. Kurth.

My sibs and I recently discovered that our mom was married during WWII to Donald F Sherman, Jr.. He was killed in the war. Mom remarried (to my father) and never told us about her first marriage. She died this past winter, and we would love to know more about Donald and his family. Obviously, in case there was anything hurtful in the relationship, we don't want to stir anything up. Anyone help?

Karen, The following information was included in a recent post concerning the Guin and Massey families of Chatham County NC by a fellow researcher. Jane Poe (1734-1793) was the wife of James Massey of Chatham County and daughter of Simon Massey.
" Can anyone provide info regarding Kedar Gewin/Cader Guin who is listed in the 1800 census of Anson County, NC? Kedar was aged 16-25 (born 1775- 1784), had a wife in the same age category, and a female child under 10. Kedar was next household to Asa Gewin, 45+. James Powe (Poe), Sr. and James Powe (Poe), Jr. were a few households away. I cannot locate this Kedar in 1810. I am trying to determine if this Kedar Gewin is the 1st husband of Sarah Massey (1777-1865), daughter of James Massey (1750-1818) and Jane Poe (1734-1793) of Chatham County, NC. Jane Poe is the daughter of Simon Poe (1706-1793) and Sarah ___."

Thomas Washington POE lineage

Good Morning All,

I've just recently found my wife descends from Thomas Washington POE and Elizabeth HEPNER, via their daughter Sarah who married first George CALHOUN and second Timothy KIRBY.

There's no doubt he's one of the son's of Adam Poe, the famous Indian fighter. However, there's a question mark in regards to his mother. Some people have it as Elizabeth CAMDEN, Some have it as Elizabeth COCHRAN, the widow, and some have it as Elizabeth MATTHEWS, who has a brother that's a preacher. Unfortunately, no one I talked to seems to have sources. All the sources I've seen do not give a name of his wife, although one source says Adam was married twice. Anyways any help would be much appreciated.

Secondly, is there any sources as to the wife of George Jacob Poe, the original German immigrant?

Thanx,

Jim Shreve
