My wife is a Margaret Pogue, several years ago we started to find all our Family Pogues. With lots of strange but wonderful Luck we have found & met all the living relatives. Since then we have got back to 1785 John Pouge in the Carrigallen Census of 1821.this gave us the christian names used by all the generations, Charles & William used 4 times ,Stuart,Margaret & Mary used 3 times. We are now trying to find the links to several other Pogue Families from the County Cavan Area in Ireland, strange luck again by using the 40 pages of world wide Pogues, emailed to us from Grahame Pogue in Melbourne at the start of our fantasic family journey.
Should you wish to learn more our Contact email is walker_r14@sky.com
Kind regards to you all
Margaret & Ray Walker

I have been reading recent posts on the Pogue family. My descendency is Colonel Robert Poague, William Poague, General Robert Poague, William Lindsey Poague (Pogue) who married Caroline Roach. William and Caroline's daughter Harriet Eleanor Poague Cooper was my gggrandmother. These folks all lived in Kentucky however somewhere in my records I have William Lindsey Pogue going to Missouri, either to visit or to live there for a short time.

I have a public tree, I don't know if I have to invite you or not, but we are relatives. My grandmother raised me, so I was acquainted with her people. She spoke often of her aunts and uncles on her father's side (Pogue). Her mother was an only child, the sibblings died in infancy. I knew my great-grandmother, but her husband died when my mother was very young.

Maybe you won't need it, I have a public tree. I think there is someone very famous in our line, I got so excited about it though I stopped working on it for awhile. I wanted to approach it again with an objective view.

Hello, if still interested in Sarha Robinson, this is my grandfathers half sister. She was born in 1875, in Walker Co. Alabama, I have traced the Robinson family back to the 1700, were they came to america from england. Sarha, her Dad, and her half sister Lula, all lived in Arkansas, and Chicasaw Nation, Oklahoma. Lula married William Shelton. You can find Sarah Robinson on 1880 Walker Co. Township 14, Alabama Census. She is listed as 5years old in the home with her father, who is listed as a widower. You can contact me at vivianrobinson_57@yahoomail.com hope to hear from you, Vivian

Yes, we finally found her after all these years living in the Amarillo Tx area. However, she is affliated with some church that doesn't want anyone to contact her or her spouse without first meeting with their pastor and others for approval! Sounds wierd to us and we do not want to get involved in this one. So, at least we know after many years that she is alive and well and married to a Jim Boyd. I finally got to actually speak to her briefly (after the church approved and assisted me to get a call to her!). So, me and her step father now know she is alive (but well is questionable). It seems there is a church that runs their lives for the both of them and we are just leaving at that. I personally gave Nancy mine and her step father's contact info and told her if/when she was ready and the church approves her to do so that she contact either one of us "collect" call. Doubt we will hear any more as her step father got a note from this church offering him to buy her burial plots in Austin area for an outrageous price. Makes one wonder who would get the money.

Very sad after all these years of worrying and searching for her that although we found her we do not feel comfortable trying to visit or pursue a relationship with her with this church involvement and she has not used the info I gave HER to make contact.

We just pray that she will be okay and happy in live and safe and feel we can go on at least knowing she is alive.

Thank you.

I've found my Pogues listed as Pollock once, way in the beginning which really threw me, and all the other versions you mention.
Hi Tracey! I've found name spelling to be inconsistent and not considered very important before the 20th Century. Found an early 19th C. No.Carolina Will where a lot of goods were left to David Pogue; each item was separately noted and David's name was spelled differently each time (whether to avoid legal trouble or because it wasn't important I don't know). In my line have found legitimate spellings of: Pogue, Pouge, Poag, Poage, Poge and one Pozne (assume transcription error). Also, Pollack and Polack are commonly associated with Pogue, typically the Scottish branch of the family. I use all the above in my searches (especially after finding that Pozne - wacky!). Good Luck!

Interestingly, he might have actually been adopted as well. His mother was killed in a hit and run in 1945 in San Antonio. The mother and two children (Frances Marie Phillippe Travis, Pierce and Rosalie Travis) were walking along Frio Road in San Antonio at midnight and were victims of a hit and run. The mother was killed instantly. The father had died several years earlier. The children went to live with their maternal grandparents - thus the name Phillippe. The grandparents very well could have adopted them - although, I have no record of that. He apparently did use a lot of aliases and spent some time in prison here in Texas. Last record I have of him was not showing up in court in North Carolina for traffic tickets in 1995. The Travis family is somewhat distant from me - My great grandfather was their uncle - so I only know them by family history.

I think that your Zachariah Pogue is in the 1870 census in the household of Wiley and Esther Pogue in Missouri. He is listed as being age 4. This Wiley is also in the 1850 census in the household of Zachariah Pogue and Louise Pogue in Lewis County, Tennessee. This Zachariah is the brother to my ancestory Eli Pogue.

The Pogues are from the Pollocks in Scotland, many of whom ended up in Ulster. Pogue derives directly from Pollock, perhaps in this way: Pollock (with a long O--Poe-lock) said fast and with a brogue sounds very much like Polk; Polk sounds like Poke, which sounds like Poge with a hard G. The derived name can be spelled in several ways, as are many of the Ulster Scots (Scotch-Irish) names. Remember that before the middle of the 1800s there was no standardized spelling of any words, including names; words were spelled as the writer heard them.

I'd be very surprised if only one Pogue family came to America. Even if they did, there is a very good chance that some Polks, Poages, Poges, etc, had the spelling changed to Pogue somewhere along the way.

Hi Tracy,
what was the birth date on lyour James Monroe Pogue?
Also the Pogue name was used after the Pollock's sort of fled to Ireland. The Pogue name traces to that one family in Ireland. Of the five or so brothers it seems most came to america in the late 1600's and early 1700s there is Pollock, Polk, Poage, Pogue, and manyother mixtures of pougue etc. Robert and John Pogue immigrated into America in Philidelphia in 1739 and the imigration person spelled their name Poage. One of Robert Poage(pogue) son's William was killed by indians in Harodsburg, KY in 1738 and the lawyers processing his will changed the spelling to the original Pogue. He is the odds on favorite of my cousins and I to be James grandfather. We have at best sketchy recorded information but some to that effect. Probably some good stories in there some where. keep searching
dick
That is very interesting for sure. My tree shows the following (names and birth dates from Tx Birth Certifidcates Index):

Children of Frank E Phillippe Sr and Hannah Rouf-Phillippe had at least 3 children listed in the Tx Birth Indexes that have "Travis" in their names):

1) Pierce Claude Travis Phillippe (Born 07 Jun 1936 in Bexar CO)
2) Rosalie Ann Travis Phillippe (Born 27 AUG 1939 in Bexar CO)
3) Jeanne Marie Travis Phillippe (Born 14 Jan 1942 in Bexar Co)

When adopted children receive a new birth certificate and the orig. birth certificate is sealed.

If Frank and Hanna were the grandparents (versus the natural parents) then it does appear the grandparents adopted at least 3 "Travis" children because each of the above children also have "Travis" in their names in the Texas birth certificate index.

Travis and Nancy were only married about 6 months according to the Texas marriage and divorce indexes (married 01 Feb 1973 and divorced on 10 Aug 1973). I do not know if they had any children or not, but she was married AGAIN on 21 Sep 1973 to a Robert "Bobby" A Robinson in Travis County. Nancy Rhea Pogue was married to a Tommy Lyle McInroe (14 Feb 1977 and divorced on 09 Dec 1983) and they had a daughter named: Tammy La Rhea McInroe born 02 Jan 1979 (this is one we have the original birth certificate and it no longer exists in the Tx birth indexes, so we think she was adopted out probably by DHS and we do not know whatever happened to her). Along the way Nancy also had a son (we do not know from which marriage) and we think he may have been adopted out likely in the Hillsboro Texas area or Dallas area, but are not sure. We just know she had at least 2 children (maybe more w/ the multiple marriages). Nancy also had aliases and a record with DPS due to her drinking problems mostly (public intoxication, dui).

I show other marriages for Travis Phillippe too.
I just looked up the marriage and this is most likley your distant relative (one of her multiple marriages)....

She married a Travis Phillippe on 01 Feb 1973 in Travis county Texas and to my knowledge and recollection they lived in South Austin. Apparently he was using the assumed name when they married as Travis Phillippe is the name they married under.

That'sher as she did marry a Travis Phillipe (which I did not know was not his real name). No we have not found her - no trace since ca 1994. She had at least 2 children who we suspect were adopted out by DHS, as we cannot find the children either even though we have an original copy of the girl's birth certificate (that cert is no longer showing on the birh index which is commonly sealed if a child is adopted out).

Nancy fell apart when her mother passed away and went thru a number of marriages (and had at least two children that we know of) and the family could not keep up with her after her mother passed away she was always moving around.

Thanks so much for your reply. I hope we some day find out what has happened to her.

The story my grandmother Maye Pogue Wagner of Greeley Ne. told was, that during one of the many wars between the English and the Scots, A Scotsman named Powell or Pollock (her Aunts didn`t agree) was sent to requision horses for the Scotch army. When the English won the war, they hunted him, as a horse thief, with hanging in mind. He escaped to Ireland, then changed his name to POGUE. POGUE is an Irish word, but not a family name. It means " A KISS ". Later he Married an Irish girl and came to this country.

Supposedly all Pogues spelled POGUE are related.

3rd Genaration Pogue

JaJohnson62@frontiernet.net

The only names I can find for her parents are Edger G Pogue and Nettie [Kelley] Kelly but I don't even know if this is accurate. I think the mother's maiden name might be correct. I am trying to find info on her parents. She had five siblings (since some might still be alive I won't name them.

Hazel married Everett Webb (my grandfather) there daughter's name is Dana (my mom); Thomas Salvadore Butera, she also had a third husband (prior to my grandfather) and ,they had a son named Hunter, I am not sure about his name.

I don't know if anyone on this message board might have a common line, but if anyone might please respond, I have kinda gotten stuck. My mom's cousin on her Dad's side has gone all the way back to the Revolutionary War, I am trying to work on her mother's side of the family.

Thanks!!!!!!

Re: William Eli Pogue

Hi there -
Wilma Opel Sweat is Eli Pogue's first wife. Wilma Open & Eli had 8 children - one of which is William Vaughn Pogue and one of which is Betty Pogue Pattie (who is my mother in law). Wilma Opel died of cancer (it is believed). Eli then remarried ANOTHER Wilma (Wilma Latch) who died in a car accident on July 18, 1954. My mother in law, Betty, was riding in the car with her at the time (she was only 5 years old) but survived. I have just started working on her geneology as a gift to her. I can't find anything about Eli Pogue, but am reaching out to her family to find more info. If you would like to exchange info, please feel free to email me at megan_pattie@yahoo.com.
Thank you & Good Luck!
