Victor Barnett Kilman, Jr. is my father and died in Houston, Tx in 1994. In 1987 he sent to me a Kilman Geneology/Pedigree Chart that shows Robert Marion Kilman (born 5 Jan 1824 in Cumberland Co KY and died 9 Jan 1911 in Hunt Co TX) married a Rebecca J. (my dad listed her last name as unknown....now I know it is Poindexter)who was born 4 June 1830 in Cumberland Co KY and died Nov 1867 in Howell Co MO. Robert Marion Kilman and Rebecca J. Poindexter were parents of a Francis Marion Kilman (born 29 Jan 1864 in Lawrence Co AR and died 16 Apr 1943 in Greenville, TX).
Francis Marion Kilman married Mary Elizabeth Fooshee on 11 May 1881 in Terrell TX. Now, Mary Elizabeth Fooshee was the daughter of Michael Fooshee and Sarah Ann Barnett Fooshee and was born 11 Oct 1863 in Howell Co MO two years before the death of her father, Michael Fooshee on 7 Aug 1865 (?). Interestingly, Sarah Ann Barnett Fooshee later married Francis Marion Kilman's father Robert Marion Kilman in Howell Co MO one month after the death of Rebecca J. Poindexter Kilman. So, Francis Marion Kilman married his step-sister, Mary Elizabeth Fooshee, and they had many children, one of whom was my grandfather, Victor Barnett Kilman, Sr....my dad's dad....we called him papa.

Preston Kilman

Your Ralph and Alene's son,it is so great to know you are now working on the family history!! I absolutely recommend you join our DNA project. We have no one down your direct line for a number of generations. The closest we get is Captain Joseph himself as a mutual ancestor.

Especially since we have a participant that has proven connections going back to George through Captain Joseph, who positively connected up with our other immigrant George descendants, we could definitively prove your connection and start trying to find out where the missing documentation might be. Take a look at the FamilyTree DNA site and let me know what you think. All my contact information is there.

Say hi to the family for me. - Robin Butler Daviet

I have the direct lineage to Daniel L. Poindexter.
Me myself then,my father-Harold Ralph, his father Leonard Basil, his father Robert Thomas, his father John R., his father DANIEL L. POINDEXTER......Joseph, Jr, then Capt. Joseph. I have all the record (wills, gravestones, obits, census, ML)for all the connections except the one b/w Joseph and Nancy O. Price had Daniel L. Poindexter. The problem I think is that Daniel was born in 1822 after the 1820 census, then his father, Joseph died in 1824 before the next census. I have not been able to locate a will yet in Rutherford Co., TN. I may have to tie them together thr the mother Nancy, somehow. Yes, I have been to PDA reunions thr my parents. I just joined the group for more info!

Re: link?

Some of these earlier generations, particularly those in Tennessee, got confused by researchers in the formation period and first few years of the Poindexter Descendants Association. The information was given to the PDA by direct line descendants and placed into the database as given. That was the case with Daniel L. Poindexter and the marriage of a Joseph Poindexter to Nancy O. Price.

We are an association made up of all volunteers who are Poindexter cousins. Research of specific lines was left up to those who were descendants of those lines. Some lines had experienced genealogists working with their newer research cousin buddies. Other lines struggled with their detail gathering. Most importantly, we were all sharing. And as often happens, when we are looking deeper into one of our own co-lateral lines, we occasionally came across data about a Poindexter we knew nothing about before and shared it with the group. This is how we helped each other and continue to do so to this day.

There was a massive about of information being accumulated in those early days, which is also still true today, and the proofs were left to be provided by those direct line descendants themselves. A couple of PDA researchers did come across a marriage bond for Joseph Poindexter and Nancy O. Price. However, no documentation seems to have been provided for the relationship of that Joseph Poindexter to Capt. Joseph Poindexter. Actually Capt. Joseph's will would indicate that it was not his son Joseph Poindexter Jr. who married Nancy O. Price.

Today the PDA has another tool in its genealogy kit that it did not have 20+ years ago. We sponsor a Poindexter Surname DNA Project through FamilyTree DNA. We have been having excellent results connecting up family members, proving disconnected lines, and confirming a second Poindexter family group that immigrated to America. This second group descends from a John C. Poindexter who first settled in Virginia and then moved his young and very large family to Hawkins County, Tennessee. It is possible that the Joseph Poindexter, who married Nancy O. Price, comes from this family group.

If you can locate a Poindexter male who is a proven direct descendant of Daniel L. Poindexter, we could at least confirm which Poindexter emigrant Daniel comes from. Then we may be able to have some leads as to where to look for the paper documentation you are seeking.

Hopefully we can help each other. For more details about the Poindexter DNA Project and FamilyTree DNA, go to http://www.familytreedna.com then follow the links to Surname Projects and click on Poindexter.

Sincerely,
Robin Butler Daviet
Richard,

Thank you very much for your help. That was far more than I could have hoped for.

If you are in contact with any of the living descendants of Hattie Josephine DEAVER POINDEXTER, please let them know that there is an long-standing, informal reunion of Reuben/Lydia DEAVER descendants every year, on the first Saturday in August, at Blairsville.

Now, since you have so much information, here is a "long shot" question for you. If you look at the household of John D POINDEXTER on the 1910 US Census (Odum, Wayne, Georgia), you will notice that a "Pixie D TAYLOR" is in the household, 11 years old, listed as a "niece". Do you know whose child she is? I have a theory that she is a daughter of Hattie's sister Dora Cordelia DEAVER, but that is just a wild guess. I have not found any other record that mentions her.

--
David Thomas
Sugar Land, Texas

My first reply didn't have the updates with your input. Posting again.
Descendants of John D. Poindexter

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN D.9 POINDEXTER (JASPER8, THOMAS WILLIAM7, THOMAS WILLIAM PLEDGE6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, GEORGE2, THOMAS1 POIGNDESTRE) was born 12 Aug 1879, and died 20 Jun 1946. He married (1) HATTIE JOSEPHINE DEAVER 10 Nov 1898 in Fannin Co., GA by J.M. Slate, JP/NP Book C-165, daughter of EPHRIAM DEAVER and CATHERINE ANDERSON. She was born 01 Jan 1875 in Shoal Creek, Cherokee Co., NC, and died 02 Nov 1910. He married (2) SUSIE EDNA KENNEDY 01 Nov 1911, daughter of EDWARD KENNEDY and MISSOURI CARTER. She was born 26 Jun 1878 in Appling Co., GA, and died 04 Dec 1960 in Atlanta, Dekalb Co., GA.

Notes for JOHN D. POINDEXTER:
The Reverend John Poindexter, a Baptist preacher, is reputed to have come to Wayne County, about 1902 on a mission for the Georgia Baptist Convention. A few years later he returned to North Georgia and told his friends and relatives about the easy way a farmer could plow the loamy soil of Wayne County compared to the rocky soil of North Georgia. In any event, the records of Wayne County show that forty families moved from Gilmer and Murray Counties between 1905 and 1920. Most of them settled on farms between Odum and Screven. Most descendants moved to cities and became successful in business and professions.

More About JOHN D.
Re: Sara *Iniwah* Gist

I'm very sorry. I apologize for a giant misunderstanding. And I'd like to clarify. I myself don't doubt that Sarah Gist was the mother of Benjamin Speers & Archibald Thomas Poindexter, the first two sons of Micajah Poindexter. I don't doubt at all that she was of Indian blood. You can find Sarah Gist and her sons on my webpage I mentioned. I'm not disputing your ancestry or your research, or anyone else's research for that matter. Please don't misunderstand. I was simply reporting testimony which is public record and may be accessed on Ancestry.com. These were not my words - they can be read by anyone at the National Archives or on film from LDS, not just with a subscription at Ancestry. This is the microfilm of the original documents. Applying to the Dawes Commission may have been puzzling to some and obviously not everyone was at that time clear on their Indian ancestry. I think the confusion is interesting, perhaps a comment on human nature. Probably their greatest error was in consenting at that time to be consolidated with the case of William Anders Poindexter who was not a child of Sarah Gist and had no claim through her. It's possible the ramifications of consolidating the cases was not adequately explained to them. But if one case was denied, they would all be denied. Micajah's grandchildren, married daughters of Benjamin Speers Poindexter and their widowed mother Amanda on behalf of her minor children, as well as children of Micajah that were full siblings to William Anders Poindexter and not descendants of Sarah Gist, gave the false testimony regarding Micajah's mother's ancestry [she was Rebecca Flynn]. Even included in the file is an inaccurate chart of Micajah's descendants, which does not show Sarah Gist. The chart was apparently drawn up by an official in the Indian Bureau. There was a total of thirteen consolidated applications, many included several individuals, particularly minor children. Sarah Gist was never named in this set of applications. Of course those who were not her children could not have used her ancestry. The letters of rejection from the Indian Bureau are included in the files, accessible to anyone. I repeat with great sincerity - they are not my words - I did not say these things, it's in their testimony. No matter how wrong it may be, it is a part of the public record. Many people applied more than one time, apparently that was the case with Amanda and her children, and by then they had better information. Certainly they had the right to apply, which was not true for some of the others.

Thank you for your response. I am not going to get into a contest with you of who is right and who is wrong, but having done the research myself, plus the information from my Grandmother, her sisters, her brothers, and countless other relatives, and in addition the research that was completed in the Poindexter history book printed in the 1970's, I know that my information is correct. I will not respond to any further responses and suggest that before you tell someone that they do not know their family history, which althought you are distantly related, is not your own as your are not of direct descent, that you research further yourself. I am aware that Micajah had many wives, but I do know that Benjamin's mother was Sara. Thank you for your time, it was a pleasure speaking with you and I hope that you have a lovely day.

Micajah Poindexter was married five times. He had nine children by his second wife Mary Glidewell. I can furnish documentation. William Anders Poindexter who was one of these children of Mary, applied as I cited, Case 4170, which was consolidated with 12 other applications. Some were made by grandchildren of Benjamin Speer Poindexter. They did apply as Mississippi Choctaw [those that did not leave Mississippi in 1835] and through Micajah's mother Rebecca Flynn and referred to her as Inawah. Obviously they were confused. I have sufficient documentation re Rebecca Flynn as well - she did not have Indian heritage.
I, too, was under the impression that eventually Benjamin Speer Poindexter's descendants were enrolled.
If you click on my name by the message and go to my profile there is a link to my webpage with much about the Poindexters as well as my email where you can contact me personally. I descend from Micajah Poindexter's sister.
Thanks

They were applying as Mississippi Choctaws under "Inawah", who they claimed was Rebecca Flynn, wife of Archibald Pledge Poindexter. She was neither Indian, nor Choctaw. The claims were all rejected and that is the list they are on. You have to read the packets, which are not indexed. It is under the Mississippi Choctaws case #4170, consolidated, which gives the numbers of the depositions of all the applicants. In fact some of Benjamin Speer Poindexters grandchildren claim that his mother was Mary Glidewell [the 2nd wife of Micajah]. Makes interesting reading, but you have to get the whole picture.

I would think it could be Archibald Poindexter, b. abt 1844 in Dade Co MO, son of William Archibald "Archie" Poindexter and Mary Sallie Jones. Certainly he was the right age and place to join that unit. And I've never seen any additional information about him so perhaps he did die as a young man leaving no descendants. There were several brothers of an age to have been in the Civil War, too. Not my direct Poindexter line, but William Archibald "Archie" was brother to my 4th great grandmother.

Here is what I have John D. Poindexter. When updating my FamilyTree Maker it added it added C. A. Collins as spouse of Mabel. I can't verify that at this time. Also, I have a picture of John's tombstone.
Descendants of John D. Poindexter

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN D.9 POINDEXTER (JASPER8, THOMAS WILLIAM7, THOMAS WILLIAM PLEDGE6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, GEORGE2, THOMAS1 POIGNDESTRE) was born 12 Aug 1879, and died 20 Jun 1946. He married (1) HATTIE JOSEPHINE DEAVER 10 Nov 1898 in Fannin Co., GA by J.M. Slate, JP/NP Book C-165, daughter of EPHRIAM DEAVER and CATHERINE ANDERSON.

Actually, the original spelling was Poingdestre. The George Poingdestre/Poindexter family, of whom you are speaking, came from the Isle of Jersey, Channel Islands. You can discover quite a bit about this family at www.poindexterfamily.org.

As to the original question, we are still looking for firm paper documentation, but are finding that fairly sparse. The second responder who posted the beautiful picture was right on as to the actual lineage as far as our extensive research has taken us.

Ann Radford was a second wife of William "Bill" Pledge who was a trader with the Indians. He and Ann Radford also had children. Both of the children of William and Elizabeth married Poindexter's. Some of the children who came from Ann and William also married into Poindexter lines. This has made the lineage very confusing and difficult to trace.

We would like to find both female direct lines and male direct lines of William Pledge and Elizabeth's two children (a daughter Elizabeth "Betty" and a son Francis "Frank"), so we could include them in our DNA Project study. The female line would help us confirm our Native American heritage. The Pledge descendants would be able to help us confirm the connections to William through both his wives.

The PDA DNA project has already helped us confirm a second Poindexter/Poingdestre family line which came from France to America and is completely separate, yet possibly distantly related to the line which immigrated from the Isle of Jersey. You can find out more about our DNA Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/PDAs%20Poindexter%20Fami...

We welcome input and assistance from all Poindexter researchers worldwide.

Robin Butler Daviet - Current President of the Poindexter Descendants Association

Elizabeth and Clifford-Oklahoma

I finally sent off my membership application for the association. My link is Frances Poindexter who married Peter Apperson. That link is found at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d.... I have added and corrected some information on that site so read it and my other 2 sites with your tongue in your cheek so to speak. My query now is the Poindexter family who went to Lynch School and then Deer Creek in West Edmond (now Oklahoma City), Oklahoma. I did not know it all those years we went to school together late 40s, early 50s) that there was a possibility we were related. If my mom knew it, she never told us. As far as I know Clifford was the oldest child and Elizabeth the 2nd. There were at least 2 more younger kids but I cant remember their names. If anyone knows them I would appreciate them passing on my email to them. Thanks. And I am anxious to see all the site has to offer for members. Peggy Thomas Villanueva.

Hi, Katherine. I was wondering, were you by chance related to any Townsends in Pittsylvania, Va? Who are your ancestors? There is an incredible amount of research done by the Poindexter Descendants Association. If you haven't, check out their website.
Kim Townsend Spangrude

WOW! Fascinating. I am so curious to find out more about my relatives as my Great Grandmother passed away last year and probably taking most of the information with her. She had a son, my uncle, named Thomas Poindexter which is why this post caught my eye. Would you mind sending me a bit of information as well?

Send to: readysetgoal@aol.com

Also, where does the name Poindestra come from? My older aunts believe that Poindexter was once Poindestra. Thanks for the help!

Joan
